MBAM - ESET SS Startup Freeze

Recommended Posts

I am a new owner of MBAM 1.45, as well as ESET SS 4.2.40 on a XP SP3 machine.

Upon startup, this machine locks up every time approx 2-3 min into the reboot ONLY when MBAM "ProtectMode" is enabled!

Seems I can start MBAM Protect mode later, without issue.

I have read the forums entries and have put exceptions into ESET SS for all the MBAM files/directories/web filtering.

Some have suggested a 'delayed start' of MBAM active protect mode, but I do not know how to accomplish this.

Please advise, any help appreciated!

Hello and welcome to Malwarebytes.....

You could try adding a delayed start on MBAM in the registry (only if you feel comfortable editing your registry), below are the steps. I use them to prevent lockups with my McAfee Corp Ed. Antivirus and it solved my problem.

  • Click on Start and select Run
  • In the Run box type regedit and press Enter or click on OK
  • Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and click once on the Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware folder to highlight it
  • Right-click in the white space on the right and highlight New and select DWORD Value
  • Name the value delayguistart and then press Enter
  • Double-click on the delayguistart entry you just created and click the circle next to Decimal and type 60 for the value
  • That will cause MBAM to delay itself 60 seconds before starting, thus hopefully allowing PerfectDisk and your other programs to complete their startup process and avoid lockups or conflicts

Please let me know how it goes.

Thanks :)

YES YES!

This resolve the issue.

Thanks so much.

Now, one question, were all the exceptions necessary in ESET SS for MBAM?

Now, one question, were all the exceptions necessary in ESET SS for MBAM?

Just to put a point on the thread, I had a similar issue with NOD32/Windows XP and installed a nifty little freeware utility, Startup Delayer (Version 2.5.138) and used a 2 minute delay for MBAM to load. Problem appears to be completely resolved. Even with all requisite exclusions set in NOD32 I still got frequent freezes on boot. This seems to be caused by the A/V both checking for updates immediately and running the boot scan at the same time MBAM loads. Just delaying MBAM starting seems to solve the issue. Curiously, I also have MBAM on a VISTA machine and notice the start of MBAM is considerably delayed on it by default and it's never experienced the same problem as the XP machine.

Yes, on Vista it has an option for services to start with a delay (Automatic (Delayed Start)), however XP does not.

As for exclusions, although it obviously didn't solve this particular conflict, it's still a good idea to exclude Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware's files from your antivirus and firewall to avoid othe potential conflicts and performance issues.

If either of you require anything further please post.

Thanks :)
