Hello all, I was just wondering what the best type of FREE anti-virus there was. I have heard of so many such as AVAST and AVG etc. Anybody know the best one to use? Any help would be appreciated. I am using Windows 7 Internet Explorer 9.

I prefer Microsoft Security Essentials? First off, it's Free
First, know that you must Remove any other Anti-Virus before installing a New Anti-Virus. You can find a Host of Popular Anti-Virus Removers here:
http://kb.eset.com/e...tent&id=SOLN146
There are a host of nasty intruders on the Internet including viruses, Trojans, worms and spyware. Microsoft Security Essentials offers award-winning protection against these intruders without getting in your way.
The best brains and brawn in the background and Microsoft Security Essentials is built for individuals and small businesses, but it’s based on the same technology that Microsoft uses to protect giant businesses (security products like Microsoft Forefront, the Malicious Software Removal Tool, and Windows Defender). We have a whole team watching for new threats and coming up with ways to squash them.
We’re proud to have received great recognition for the protection we offer: the VB100 award from Virus Bulletin Ltd., Checkmark Certification from West Coast Labs, and certification from the ICSA Labs.
Easy to get, easy to use, plus Downloading and installing Microsoft Security Essentials is free* and easy. Once you have installed it, the software updates automatically once a day. We’re constantly tracking new threats and we keep your PC updated to help protect you. You don’t have to do anything.
Microsoft Security Essentials uses green, yellow and red color codes to designate the security status of your PC and a color-coded icon in the taskbar tells you at a glance if your attention is needed. It’s simple—when you’re green, you’re good. However, if there’s a red or yellow threat, Microsoft Security Essentials will alert you and recommend what to do (you can act directly from the notification area without having to enter the application).
Runs quietly without hurting PC performance which is an important feature.
Microsoft Security Essentials runs quietly in the background. You’ll only be alerted when there are specific actions to take. When you’re away or busy, Microsoft Security Essentials can take the default action on your behalf and you can open the program later to review and undo those actions if you wish.
Microsoft Security Essentials is efficient and compact. Scans and updates are scheduled to run when the PC is idle and the software works in a way that your PC is still snappy when you’re using it. All this makes Microsoft Security Essentials friendly for all sorts of computers—your old PC, your new PC, your laptop, as well as your little netbook.

People need to research before posting. This has been posted many times and is getting quite old. Some members such as myself are getting tired of this same old question that is asked regularly. There is no one product that is best. Just try a few.

(The other problem is that there will likely be 101 opinions from 100 different people. Moreover these discussions tend to devolve into heated "discussions" by folks who -- for whatever reason(s) -- strongly favor one product over another. The next step is usually software bashing.... And so on, and so forth. Each computer's hardware/software, each user and each user's computer habits are unique. So, there's no "perfect" choice that will be suitable for everyone.)
A Google search for "compare antivirus for Windows 7" (or similar search terms) will also provide a number of (reasonably) objective computer sites that compare products side-by-side for features, detection rates, cost, tech support, system requirements, etc. You might find the information at these sites helpful.
Thanks for your patience and understanding,

Not to beat a dead horse with a stick as I see this question asked frequently on this forum and other forums as well, but, there really is no best, it all comes down to personal
preference. This question has been answered by the members and staff here many times already so I am just going to throw my 2 cents out there one last time.
For Paid Anti-Virus I personally recommend ESET or Kaspersky.
For Free Anti-Virus I personally recommend Microsoft Security Essentials.
I personally use ESET Smart Security 5 on all my home PC's, its fast, light and does a good job.
I hope this helps.

yes ... that would be along the lines of what i was getting at , but maybe with "circles and arrows ..." (5 bonus points for the reference) and a marquee .
to be honest , it is a major topic and sometimes it is hard to "see" things .
