SAN FRANCISCO — Hewlett-Packard is planning to cut about 30,000 jobs to save money that it wants to spend on product development and sales, according to company officials familiar with the plan.
The executives, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak for the company, said that H.P. would seek layoffs and voluntary retirements from nearly all parts of the company, on a global basis. China, which is one of the company’s biggest growth areas, will most likely be spared, along with research and development efforts.
Meg Whitman, the chief executive, is still completing the plan, so the exact number of employees losing their jobs is not set.
