I read that MBAM (paid) has a real-time scanner..so would I have to turn off Windows Defender? or can they be run both simultaneously?

Both can be run simultaneously.
It seems a bit of overkill, however, and I chose to just keep one resident, and one as a backup scanner.

As I understand Win32, user processes run in their own address space should not be able to cause another process to crash.

If both are running and both simultaneously detect a piece of malware, neither will be able to delete it because it will be locked by the other's scanning/detection process. This can cause your system to hang as each one eats up cpu cycles trying to deal with the malware. It's kind of like 2 dogs fighting over the same bone.

Run one am/as protection in real time
Run one av protection in real time (= a must !)
Eventualy run an aditional am/as tool "on demand" for a second opinion.
The "on demand" versions are usualy free$ :-)
