Hello MBAM forum. As the title indicates, I can't uninstall Java on my machine nor can I update to version 7u7. The problem seems to be caused by a missing .dll file. Even though I have run JavaRa and could have sworn I uinstalled version 6u32 from the add/remove programs feature, it is still there. If I try to uninstall it from that feature now, I receive the following message:

Error 1723. There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A DLL required for the install to complete could not be run. Contact your support personnel or package vendor.

JavaRa may well have removed the program, but it is still in the program list.

I tried Revo and received the same message, but there were a number of registry entries found. I did not delete any since I don't know which ones I should delete.

According to "Programs and Features" and the actual Java console under the control panel, I have Java version 7 update 5. If I try to uninstall it from the prog/feat menu, nothing happens. It proceeds as if it is uninstalling, but is still in prog/feat and the Java console is still present (along with all the Java files under Program Files). Same thing with Revo - no error message, several registry entries.

If I check Java version on the Oracle site, I get this message - no working version of Java installed.

If I try to update to version 7, I get an error message stating that the install wizard was interrupted before it could finish installing.

I'm pretty sure I have exhausted all options that I feel comfortable trying. Do I just need to delete the registry entries Revo found? I'm just not that familiar with this practice.

I've also googled some things and found suggestions such as copying the Java folder from another computer. Not sure if this would work from XP to Win 7.

Any suggestions are appreciated.

No, do not copy folder from another system.
What does Revo uninstaller show exactly ? if you ask it to look for Java

Please state clearly your version & service-pack level of Windows :excl:

I am running Version 6.1 (Build 7601: Service Pack 1)

I am running the free version of Revo. I didn't ask it to look for Java. There is an icon for Java 6 Update 32 in the list of programs (and one for Java 7 Update 5). So I click uninstall:

In Revo...

1. It creates a restore point.
2. Analyzing the application data before uninstalling
3. Starting the application's built-in unistaller

Then I get the following in a separate pop-up box. This is no different from trying to uninstall it from programs/features:

Java™ 6 Update 32

Error 1723. There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A DLL required for the install to complete could not be run. Contact your support personnel or package vendor.

Revo continues as if the uninstaller worked properly.

There were 67 items found in the registry.

Here is a print screen. Is it okay to expand the entries and post here?

It won't let me include the print screen... "post_too_short"

If I try to add the print screen after it says "must include post"

Any idea how to post the print screen?

In this case, select HKEY_Classes_root & HKEY_local_machine and have them removed.
That ought to clear up all leftovers.

Posted Image Please follow these steps for Java components and update.
  • Accept the EULA & Download the latest version of >> Windows Offline << from here and save it to your desktop.

  • Get the Offline version that corresponds to your "bit-tedness" of your Windows (32-bit or 64-bit)
How to determine whether a computer is running a 32-bit version or 64-bit version of the Windows operating system

  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser(s).
  • Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, select Add/Remove Programs (XP) or Program and Features (Win7/8/Vista) and remove all older versions of Java (if any).
  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE or Java) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.

  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.

  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-7u7-windows-i586.exe to install the newest version.
    ( jre-7u7-windows-x64.exe if this is a 64-bit Windows o.s.)
  • After the install is complete, go into the Control Panel (using Classic View) and double-click the Java Icon. (looks like a coffee cup) Posted Image
    • On the General tab, under Temporary Internet Files, click the Settings button.
    • Next, click on the Delete Files button
    • There are two options in the window to clear the cache - Leave BOTH Checked
        Applications and Applets
        Trace and Log Files
  • Click OK on Delete Temporary Files Window
Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE.
  • Click OK to leave the Temporary Files Window
Small tweaks for Java runtime, since most all users do not need to load Java at each Windows startup:
Click Advanced Tab. Expand the Miscellaneous item.
UN-check the line Java quick starter
Press Apply then OK. Close the applet when done.

And it seems that just leaving Java off of the computer for now is best.

I don't want to delete HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT and HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE do I? I know in all likelihood that is not what you meant. You meant delete the entries beneath those two (e.g., CLSID, Installer), correct? Or do I delete the bold items only? I really don't want to delete something in the registry that will screw something up.

I don't want Java on my machine at all because I keep seeing stuff like Advanced Setup posted. I don't use Java (to my knowledge). I have already disabled all the add-ons in both IE and FF. I'm guessing you can't uninstall these, can you? Thanks for the help!

If you have looked (via Windows Explorer) and have no Java folder in C:\Program Files (x86)\Java {or C:\Program Files\Java if on XP}
and you have no remaining listing of Java in Programs and Features {Add-or-Remove Programs in XP}
then you should be without Java runtime and you can leave it at that.

On the Revo, {which you can disregard now, as it should be non-fatal}, I meant for you to search for Java, and remove the bolded items that it found.

As things stand now, you are better off not having Java installed.

Sorry I haven't replied in a while. I felt better after disabling the add-on. However, I still have a jre7 folder under Program Files (x86) - Java. It includes a bin and lib folder along with other documents. It looks like what you would expect if the application was still installed. I still haven't deleted any of the registry entries in Revo. I can't imagine that would make a difference. And I still have the Java (32-bit) icon under control panel (in addition to the two entries in Prog.&Features).

Delete the jre7 folder and everything under it.

Download DDS and save it to your desktop from http://download.blee...om/sUBs/dds.scr here
or http://download.blee...om/sUBs/dds.com or
http://www.infospyware.net/sUBs/dds

Disable any script blocker if your antivirus/antimalware has it.
Then double click dds.scr to run the tool.
DDS will run in a command prompt window and will take 3 to 4 minutes or so.

  • When done, DDS will open two (2) logs:
  • DDS.txt
  • Attach.txt
  • Save both reports to your desktop.
Please Copy & Paste contents of the following logs in your next reply:
DDS.txt
Attach.txt

Download Security Check by screen317 from here.
  • Save it to your Desktop.
  • Double click SecurityCheck.exe and follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
  • A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.

So, don't delete the bold registry entries in Revo? I just want to make sure I'm correctly following your instructions.

My inclination is to have Revo uninstaller remove leftover entry for Java.

Take a snaphot backup beforehand:
1. Go >> Here << and download ERUNT
(ERUNT (Emergency Recovery Utility NT) is a free program that allows you to keep a complete backup of your registry and restore it when needed.)
2. Install ERUNT by following the prompts
(use the default install settings but say no to the portion that asks you to add ERUNT to the start-up folder, if you like you can enable this option later)
3. Start ERUNT
(either by double clicking on the desktop icon or choosing to start the program at the end of the setup)
4. Choose a location for the backup
(the default location is C:\WINDOWS\ERDNT which is acceptable).
5. Make sure that at least the first two check boxes are ticked
6. Press OK
7. Press YES to create the folder.

Again, sorry for the delay. It looks like everything is uninstalled. The only remnant is under the Control Panel (not Programs and Features). The icon for Java is still there even though when you click the icon, you get a message stating that there is not an associated program installed. Any idea how to get rid of the icon? I went ahead and ran dds and security check just in case you wanted to look at them. Is it still best to keep Java off the computer? Thank you very much for your help.

First, I suggest you make sure your system is up-to-date with Windows Update. An Important update for I.E. browser {KB274482} was released last Friday. Make sure your systems have it.
Run a manual check for updates at Windows Update, etc., etc...
When you reach Windows Update, do a scan for updates. Take (accept) the ones marked Critical or Important.
Decline any that are marked as "optional".

Have infinite patience while it scans and does its work.

When it prompts you to Restart Windows, please do that. Allow it to restart.

Your system has a leftover from AVG that needs removal:
Run a Batch Script
  • Press the Windows-key on keyboard.
  • In the Posted Image box, type notepad and press Enter.
  • Highlight the contents of the following codebox, and copy and paste that text into NOTEPAD.
    sc stop AvgUninstallURL
    sc delete AvgUninstallURL
    del /f /q "%~f0"
  • Select File -> Save AS.
  • Press the Desktop button on the left side of the save dialog.
  • In the Posted Image box, type in Fix.bat.
  • Press Posted Image.
  • Close Notepad.
  • Right click Posted Image on your desktop, and choose Posted Image.
  • Press Yes if prompted by User Account Control.
  • This batch will run quickly in a command window, and at end, will delete itself.

NEXT:
Get, save, then run the AVG Remover Tool
AVG 2012 Remover Tool 32-bit

AVG 2012 Remover Tool 64-bit
http://download.avg....4_2012_2125.exe

As to Java, not all systems need Java runtime. If you do not need it, it is ok to disregard the Java icon in Control Panel.
If you do find you must have Java, make sure you get the most current version that matches your system's operating system.

Your Adobe Flash Player is out of date
To de-install Flash Player
Use Programs and Features (Windows 7 & Vista) or Add-or-Remove Programs (Windows XP) to de-install older versions of Flash Player.

For stubborn cases,
Download and save the Flash Player uninstaller >> uninstall Flash Player for 32-bit Windows<<

If you have Windows 64-bit, use this Flash Player uninstaller >> uninstall Flash Player for 64-bit Windows<<

Close all browsers and instant messenger (IM) programs.
Run the uninstaller.

To get latest Flash Player
Go to http://www.adobe.com/go/getflash
and get the latest Flash Player

Un-Check any checkbox for Google Chrome, or McAfee Security Scan Plus, or any other widget or toolbar or add-on!!!

Reference: How to determine whether a computer is running a 32-bit version or 64-bit version of the Windows operating system

Other than the lefover AVG & Flash player, your DDS log and the Checkup log results are good. You are good to go.
