any program i am trying to open (Windows XP Home), for example, notepad, i am getting this error message:
NOTEPAD.EXE - Bad Image
The application or DLL C:\WINDOWS\system32\yepogofa.dll is not a valid Windows image. Please check this against your installation diskette.

since yesterday my firefox is opening on its own leading to unwanted sites. IE is unaffected. i am trying to describe what is happening:

if i click to open firefox to go to say, google.com, after a few seconds another firefox window is popping up leading to unwanted site. then another, then another!!! even if i click to open IE to go to say, google.com, after a few seconds a firefox window is popping up leading to unwanted site. then another, then another!!!

now, one may think this is virus/malware problem, but... i did full scan with AVG antivirus version 8.0, and with latest spyware doctor (pctools). even after reboot, the problem still persists! i don't know what the heck is going on.

i did several scans with malwarebytes before (both quick and full), but virus is coming back again and again, now with error messages (when windows starts, several similar error messages) and firefox pop-ups.

Try running this AntiVirus tool while I'm away to see if it can locate anything else that might be hidden.

Download to the desktop: Dr.Web CureIt

• Doubleclick the drweb-cureit.exe file and Allow to run the express scan
  
• This will scan the files currently running in memory and when something is found, click the yes button when it asks you if you want to cure it. This is only a short scan.
  
• Once the short scan has finished, Click Options > Change settings
  
• Choose the "Scan"-tab, remove the mark at "Heuristic analysis".
  
• Back at the main window, mark the drives that you want to scan.
  
• Select all drives. A red dot shows which drives have been chosen.
  
• Click the green arrow at the right, and the scan will start.
  
• Click 'Yes to all' if it asks if you want to cure/move the file.
  
• When the scan has finished, look if you can click next icon next to the files found:
  
  If so, click it and then click the next icon right below and select Move incurable as you'll see in next image:
  
  This will move it to the %userprofile%\DoctorWeb\quarantaine-folder if it can't be cured. (this in case if we need samples)
  
• After selecting, in the Dr.Web CureIt menu on top, click file and choose save report list
  
• Save the report to your desktop. The report will be called DrWeb.csv
  
• Close Dr.Web Cureit.
  
• Reboot your computer!! Because it could be possible that files in use will be moved/deleted during reboot.
  
• After reboot, post the contents of the log from Dr.Web you saved previously in your next reply with a new hijackthis log.

Then run this again
Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

• Start MalwareBytes AntiMalware
  
  • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    
  • Select the Update tab
    
  • Click Update
• When the update is complete, select the Scanner tab
  
• Select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  
• When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  
• Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  
• When completed, a log will open in Notepad. please copy and paste the log into your next reply
  
  • If you accidently close it, the log file is saved here and will be named like this:
    
  • C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt

Then RESTART the computer and run HJT Scan and save log.

Post back ALL the logs

here is what i did so far:
updated malwarebytes > ran quick scan > removed all selected items > rebooted.

important: after reboot, i noticed two porn icons in my desktop installed by the virus were gone.

now, i downloaded Dr. Web CureIt, followed your direction completely.

after scan, i could not save log ("save report list" was greyed out) as Dr. Web said, "Done - no viruses found".

now i ran "HijackThis" and log is saved as follows (i did not do "Fix Checked"):

[indent]Please Download OTMoveIt3 by Old Timer and save it to your Desktop.

• Double-click OTMoveIt3.exe to run it.
  
• While connected to the Internet, Click on the green CleanUp! button and it will populate a list of items to clean from your system that we used or may have used.
  
• It should ask if you want to clean up, select Yes and allow the system to clean up these items.

NOW please reboot your computer to finish the cleanup process and post back the log from OTMoveIt3[/indent]

Then run one more round of MBAM, UPDATE, Quick Scan.
The restart the computer and run HJT Scan and Save log

Post back all the logs and hopefully you're all clean now.

Because MBAM already removed it. It was probably already dead but was a left over remnant that MBAM added to it's definitions for removal.

That's okay on the log. Please run the following to make sure.

Download and install CCleaner

• CCleaner
  [indent]
  
• Double-click on the downloaded file "ccsetup215.exe" and install the application.
  
• Keep the default installation folder "C:\Program Files\CCleaner"
  
• Uncheck "Add CCleaner Yahoo! Toolbar and use CCleaner from your browser"
  
• Click finish when done and close ALL PROGRAMS
  
• Start the CCleaner program.
  
• Click on Registry and Uncheck Registry Integrity so that it does not run
  
• Click on Options - Advanced and Uncheck "Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours"
  
• Click back to Cleaner and click on the Run Cleaner button on the bottom right side of the program.
  
• Click OK to any prompts[/indent]

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

• Start MalwareBytes AntiMalware
  
  • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    
  • Select the Update tab
    
  • Click Update
• When the update is complete, select the Scanner tab
  
• Select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  
• When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  
• Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  
• When completed, a log will open in Notepad. please copy and paste the log into your next reply
  
  • If you accidently close it, the log file is saved here and will be named like this:

The RESTART the computer again and AFTER the restart run HJT Scan and Save log and post back all NEW logs and let me know if you see anything wrong anymore.

I would recommend you run this.

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.
Please download JavaRa and unzip it to your desktop.
***Please close any instances of Internet Explorer (or other web browser) before continuing!***

• Double-click on JavaRa.exe to start the program.
  
• From the drop-down menu, choose English and click on Select.
  
• JavaRa will open; click on Remove Older Versions to remove the older versions of Java installed on your computer.
  
• Click Yes when prompted. When JavaRa is done, a notice will appear that a logfile has been produced. Click OK.
  
• A logfile will pop up. Please save it to a convenient location.

You can install a new version of Java once the system is cleaned up.

• Check Turn off System Restore.

No I do not. That would be too much software. Basically you need just a few of them.

A good Antivirus, a good Anti-Malware (you have Malwarebytes free, but a paid version offers live blocking of Malware as well as automated updates and scheduled scanning) - then a good firewall. The other items then fall into the realm of possibly. A lot depends on what and how you use your computer. If you have too many programs loaded then it will slow down the computer, but if you or someone else using the computer frequents gaming, or peer2peer sites or adult sites then you may want to add a couple others such as WinPatrol.
