Hy there,

Please do a right-click on one file with the IE icon on it ( as an example CCLeaner ) --> Properities.

Copy paste the Filepath under Target here.

Okay,
One of my colleagues is thinking, that there went something wrong with the installation of WinZip. Lets give it a shot :)

  • Please download Revo Uninstaller.
  • Extract the ZIP file to a folder and run revouninstaller.exe from there! (You can copy that folder to an USB Mass storage drive and use it without any installation required!)
  • There are two ways to uninstall programs with Revo Uninstaller:
Important: Please, try to close the application you want to uninstall first!
    • Select the WinZipBar in the list of installed applications and press the Uninstall button in the toolbar.
    • Right-click the application and click the Uninstall command in the displayed menu. Follow the instructions.

Reboot your OS and let me know if anything changed

OK, I've downloaded the revuninstaller and tried to run it. When it got to step 2 and tried to uninstall it it hit the file download pop-up. Then when it looked for left over items its come up with multiple entries in the registry and is asking whether I want to delete them.

Do I skip this step, or delete all of them?

Sorry, had to go shopping.

Yes, please delete all detections by Revo :)

No worry - I made some cakes.

Unfortunately the symptoms are still the same :(

If its just a problem caused by the download going wrong, can't I just do a system restore to before?

I found some malware entries but we can give it a try. But first I want to try the following.

Please download exehelper to your desktop.
If your AV program throws up a warning about the program, ignore the warning. Some AV's flag this program because of how it works... that's all.
  • Double-click on exeHelper.com to run the fix.
  • A black window should pop up, press any key to close once the fix is completed.
  • Post the contents of exehelperlog.txt ( Will be created in the directory where you ran exeHelper.com and should open at the end of the scan)

Note : If the window shows a message that says "Error deleting file", please re-run the program before posting a log - and post the new log

As I would like to find the problem here, it is your PC which comes unusable.

A last thing what I want to check.

Please press the Posted Image + R Key and Copy/Paste the following single-line command into the Run box and click OK

mbam

When Malwarebytes starts, please perform a Quick Scan. Remove all detections and post the Logfile here.

If not, try a system restore.

Daniel,

I can afford to be without the computer for another day, but after that I'll have to think about taking more radical action. I ran both a quick scan and a full scan. Neither found anything. I've enclosed the quick scan log - let me know if you want the other one as well.

MBAM looks good.

Anyway, does this only happen when you click on the .lnk Files on your desktop ?

Sorry, I don't understand the question - what are .ink files?

The pop-ups seem to appear if i try and run anything like explorer, system restore, games as well as the shortcuts from the desktop. Oddly i can't run explorer directly, but if I go into my computer, and look at the disk i can access the files from there. I assume that there is a subtle difference between these.

If I want to run system restore, can I change its name to .com to get it to run, or will I have to find a less direct method?

Hy again.

Let me have a look over fresh DDS Logfiles. Maybe something comes up.

Please launch DDS
  • When done, DDS will open two (2) logs:
    • DDS.txt
    • Attach.txt
  • Save both reports to your desktop and post both in your next reply

This should open the Systemrestore ( as it also opened MBAM :D )
Please choose a restore point around Feb 20th.

:) :) :) :) :) :)

I got it to run from the safe mode menu, and it seems to have done the trick. I have got a number of shortcuts on the desktop which are still an ie picture, but they seem to work OK.

Thank you so much for helping. I still don't know whether it was a virus or a corruption, but I don't think I'ld have managed to have the patience to fix it without your help, and would probably have wiped the disk.

Regards

Judy

You are welcome.

It would be also interesting for me, what has gone wrong here but anyway, glad it appears solved.

and would probably have wiped the disk.
In some situations like yours, I prefer to do this instead of fixing aroung for 2 or more weeks :)

You can delete the shortcuts on your desktop. It is very easy to create new ones for those files, you really need it. If you are not aware how this works, kindly ask.

( I got shocked as I read the last post on page 1, where you wrote that nothing has changed :D )

As we reseted your OS, please let me have a look over new DDS Logs.

Download DDS and save it to your desktop from here or here
Double click dds to run the tool.
  • When done, DDS will open two (2) logs:
    • DDS.txt
    • Attach.txt
  • Save both reports to your desktop and post them in your next reply

Daniel,

I've mended most of the icons, however I can't get the word or the IE icons on the taskbar to return to their proper state. Excel and powerpoint were fine, but the word icon which is fine on the desktop, changes to the ie picture when I pin it to the taskbar, and I have no idea on the IE one!

Log files as requested.

Regards

Judy

Hy there.

I do not see any kind of Malware in your logs. Before I dig deeper here. How about to back up your files and reformat your OS ? This will save your and my time and you have a fresh running Windows without any issues.
I think that a key in the registry is corrupt and to find this one can be a lot of work with an open end.

Please let me know :)
regards, Daniel
