Malwarebytes Update = Severe XP issues

Recommended Posts

Hello eddyg,

Yes, it is more than just ZA/Avast but a few others. As to XP, I suspect it is either due to "low-RAM" or to a 3rd party firewall or the installed real-time security applications.

If you follow Ron and other expert replies, you'll notice a recommendation to temporarily disable 3rd party firewall during the new MBAM install.

(that is in my view, disable 3rd-party firewall and turn on the Windows one--- and flip back after setup is complete)

I'd be interested in a list on your XP systems

how much physical RAM each one has

and for each, list the antivirus/ if any security apps installed/ if any 3rd-party firewall is installed

and speaking of firewalls, one member reported that "dialing down" (my words) or setting firewall to "learning mode" during setup did the magic.

OK - update 2:

Freezing problem occurred again. Had to reboot. Disabled active protection in Malwarebytes.

FYI:

Computer did not completely freeze. It seems that applications still worked, but were very slow. There is no response to anything on desktop or task bar .. ie EXPLORE.EXE. Anything that tries to use internet gets stuck (browsers, email, etc).

Sort of seems like there is a "process messages" missing in some loop somewhere in code. Not sure why some applications were responsive (although slow). Please note that I could use ALT-TAB to switch between active applications but after a few mins even that would freeze up, and one by one, different applications started to freeze too.

More issues here, unfortunately.

Setup: Win XP SP3, Avast 6 Free (also Spybot S&D and SuperAntispyware Free, but those don't have a realtime protection).

Few days ago MBAM updated not only a new database but also a program version (?) and I haven't been able to use it since. For the last 2 days I've been trying a lot of things more than 1 time, f.e. uninstalling using the clean-exe, installing the latest version (as is advised by the crew), updating Avast and taking care of exclusions, reinstalling my previous version (1.36) and I came across a few different problems.

I tried uninstalling and installing the latest version available from the site. Installing is no problem but the program won't run (sometimes it generated an error code 730).

The latest thing I've done just now (and have tried a few times already unsuccesfully) was clean-uninstall, reboot, disable Avast, reinstalling the old version 1.36. Installing itself is no problem, I can even get the program running again. But it refuses to update definitions, it doesn't seem to be able to get connection to the server, it just keeps on searching forever.

I'm pretty sure my comp is not infected in anyway because I know my way around how to protect against bad stuff.

If you have any advice on this...

Hi Maurice,

The XP SP3 machines all have 1 gig of RAM and the only resident security software that runs is Norton: 2 computers have Norton Internet Security 2012 (recently updated from NIS 2011) and my laptop at work had Norton Endpoint Security which I think is the same AV engine in an enterprise package. Both programs have integrated firewalls and the settings have not been changed for quite a long time. Up till now I never had a problem with any version of mbam. I should point out that I also have 3 Win 7 machines running Norton Internet Security and none of them had problems with the automatic update to 1.60.0.1800.

Maurice, you are certainly dedicated; I will raise a toast to you tomorrow night! Happy New Year!

On the XP SP3 computer that failed: my firewall is XP's own and the AV is MS Security Essentials so it is not dependent on ZoneAlarm nor Avast.

I went through the uninstall, reboot, cleanup tool, reboot and a clean install of 1.6.

It has been working both updating and running a quick scan with no problem since yesterday.

On the other two XP computers that run an old version of ZA (just firewall) and MS Security Essentials, I did not upgrade but immediately took the uninstall, etc. path and both are working fine.

My Windows 7 (64 bit) and Windows 2000 computers upgraded with no problem. 2K runs old ZA and AntiVir. Win 7 runs built in firewall and MS Security Essentials.

As far as I'm concerned, the problems seem to be with XP SP3 no matter what firewall and av you run.

I have KIS 2012 and XP SP3. My system is freezing several times after install MBAM 1.60. I've run mbam-clean and restart too. Therefore, I think there is a conflict with XP sp3. The gui of mbam 1.60 is very slooooooooow when loading, and manual update window is sloooooooow too.

Another thing I saw is I can't stop mbam service manually. The system freezes.

Mbam files and folders are excluded in my KIS 2012

Hello eddyg,

Well certainly with 1GB RAM one has to rule out a RAM issue on XP.

I'd like to also ask, if you had a prior version of MBAM, if it was PRO and IF your last attempt was via Update. (I apologize if you wrote that earlier)

Some others have had success by installing while in Safe Mode with Networking.

what that does provide is less interference with real-time monitors. I would also suggest if you do not have a license for MBAM, that you decline the Start Trial during the setup of program.

  • Download and run mbam-clean.exe from here
  • It will ask to restart your computer, please allow it to do so very important
  • As soon as pc is restarting, right away start tapping F8 function key.
When get Advanced Boot Menu, select Safe Mode with Networking.
  • Temporarily disable your Anti-Virus and install the latest version of Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from here
    • Note: You will need to reactivate the program using the license you were sent via email if using the Pro version
    • Launch the program and set the Protection and Registration. Then go to the UPDATE tab if not done during installation and check for updates.
Restart the computer again and verify that MBAM is in the task tray if using the Pro version. Now setup any file exclusions as may be required in your Anti-Virus/Internet-Security/Firewall applications and restart your Anti-Virus/Internet-Security applications. You may use the guides posted in the FAQ's here or ask and we'll explain how to do it.

Be sure you reboot as prompted during the setup process.

I will be toasting to you as well. Happy New Year.

We don't disagree that it's not disconcerting and even if the number were 10 times that amount it is still extremely low compared to millions. We are not ignoring you as some other companies might but it's not a pandemic issue either.

Once we we're able to find a solution to this Zone Alarm issue we will post about it.

Thank you again

Great Googly Moogly, A quadruple negative or perhaps a double double negative. I am impressed. This almost takes a bit of Boolean algebra to sort out. lets see.... not A, A, Not A, A. AH HA. "We agree that its concerting".

Given that the combination of MB, ZA, and XP = locked system, the odds are good that the total number of people with this problem is quite a bit larger. Possibly as big as several thousand. I know how to go back to a restore point. Sadly not all users know how or that they can do this. There are certainly many users that you have not heard from simply because they can't write you when their system is locked up. What ever the number it IS A BIG DEAL to those of us that have the problem. You may very well think of this roll out as being a success and it may well be for the company but, any comment that makes light of this problem does not belong in a forum where people are trying to solve this problem. Its just plain disrespectful of your users with the problem.

It also bothers me that you have pulled access to version 1.5 for those with the problem. An older version is still better than no version. It strikes me that the smart thing to have done would be to help the users with this problem re-install version 1.5 till a solution to the install of 1.6 could be found. I paid for MB pro and right now i do not have the use of the program I paid for in any version.

I am well aware that it is impossible to test for all problems. It is also made more difficult by the need to work with an other vendor ( ZA ) to find the solution for this problem. Its hard to know exactly how your software will interact with theirs with out access to their source code. That said, you are in complete control of how you interact with your users and this comment that I quoted is regrettable.

AHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!.........SUCCESS!!!!!!!

Waht I did was run a full scan (vs. 1.5 ??) which found 2 "PUP's" (which when I located vendor came to Mbam)

DELETED those n rebooted.

Uninstalled Mbam (vs. 1.5???) n rebooted.

Cleansed vs. 1.5?? n rebooted

D;loaded clean copy of 1.6 ??? FROM ie8 n saved to DT (per advice to eddyg from someone).

While I I was working with ie8, I did an update (I have automatic updates turned on btw), ya know, just for grins.

SOMEHOW!!, and, I do not know how this could or would occur THERE WERE 6 "CRITICAL" updates. Mind ya now, I uninstalled AND cleaned out ZA(free) yesterday, and just THEN uninstalled and cleaned Mbam vs. 1.5 ???

SOMETHING, or a COUPLE somethings had been blocking windows from d'loading these CRITICAL updates. As, when I boot up, I would get that lil shield from windows, in the sys tray, but then, it would disappear, like it was "checking", and finding they were there, disappear. Thinking there was SOMETHING afoot, I would open ie8 and run the update to check. It showed NO CRITICAL UPDATES!....this happened to the point, I just quit checking.

These updates (1 of which was 35MB, another 15MB, the others much smaller), those 2 and 2 others pertained to MS netframework versions 1,2,2.2,3,&4. Another one was for windows server 2003, and the other one was for windows office (I think).

After Mbam 1.6 ?? opened I registered (not letting it fire up. I have the pro version btw), and d'loaded the updates.

THEN, I turned it on (the protection module).........THEN, I turned security essentials back on (I forgot to mention earlier that I had turned OFF essentials BEFORE I installed 1.6 ??.....MY mistake!).

I then ran another FULL scan with 1.6 ?? (which took slightly longer[about hour n a half] then the older version [hour 20], but checked a whole lot more files 3 er 400,00 compared to 128k with the old one)......THIS scan found 1 "PUP" (in sys restore), which, again, pointed back to Mbam.

I deleted and rebooted (STILL getting that lil shield in sys tray), brought up the splash screen turned it on and checked the "fire up with windows" box and rebooted. This is where I am at this present point in time. Is working, and well...............So far.

The HOW n WHY this occured? The "tekkies" can cuss n discuss this. I don't KNOW if d'loading fresh copy n saving it to something other then my firefox bowser made a difference or not.

As of right now?.....I'm going to delete ALL my previous sys restores to keep that PUP from perchance replicating itself on a future reboot.

Congratulations bearman1.

Some observations:

Good thing you cleaned up your system. Just also remember a clean system is a requirement for successful installs.

The "bad critters" (unkown) was most likely preventing your system from getting your Windows up-to-date, which is also a good thing to keep doing on a frequent basis.

BTW, the updates from MS you got most likely were .NET updates.

Good wishes for the New Year.

Seriously folks, take the time to read through the posts from the staff and try the fixes before posting.

Uninstall MBAM using add/remove program

REBOOT !!!!!!!!

Run MBAM CLEAN

REBOOT !!!!!!!!

Download latest MBAM to your desktop

DISABLE Antivirus

DISABLE third party Firewall and ENABLE Windows Firewall (for protection during MBAM install)

INSTALL latest MBAM and update if needed

DISABLE Windows Firewall and ENABLE your third party firewall (if you want to keep it)

ENABLE Antivirus

Set EXCEPTIONS in your security programs for MBAM

Set EXCEPTIONS in MBAM for your security programs

If you are using ZONE ALARM you will have to disable it and use another third party Firewall or Windows Firewall until the staff have a fix for it.

I am using MBAM free. Have done for quite a while with no problems. I run it manually. Until the last update. This time it fouled up. Would not load and I got the "send report to Microsoft" window up. I am running XP Pro SP3 but not Zone Alarm. I am running Norton Internet Security 2012 though. After deleting the new updated version and re loading it twice I have reverted to an older version which is running fine. I just ignore the request to update the program but did update the definitions. I thought it was my clunky PC causing it so I was relieved to see there are other instances of this duff update.

"Seriously folks" ... I tried the above as well as gluing my mouse pad to the wall and holding the mouse against it on an angle of 34 degrees to the vertical using the little and fore fingers of my non-dominant hand with my dominant arm held horizontal and palm facing upwards. I was standing on my left leg with my right pointed due west at 783 millimetres from the floor with my toes pointed towards the floor while peering at the computer monitor with my left eye through a pair of 3D glasses with duct tape over the right lens to prevent me accidentally looking at the monitor with my right eye and all the while chanting (to the tune of Amazing Grace) "Oh, mighty software, update please; From hackers, protect me. Oh, mighty software, update please and set my mind at ease."

I tried this and it didn't work. Maybe next time I'll try sacrificing a virgin or my first born or maybe that annoying dog from down the street.

I've done all that, step by step....twice. My system freezes. "Seriously folks", THERE IS A CONFLICT WITH XP SP3. I have Kaspersky Internet Security 2012, not ZoneAlarm.

My system is not infected: I've scanned it with KIS, MBAM, CCE, HitmanPRO, Emsisoft Emergency kit (the last three ones are portables, so there is no conflicts with them)

Why don't you agree that there is a conflict with windows xp sp3?
