You will want to print out or copy these instructions to Notepad for Safe Mode/offline reference!
These steps are for member EverColorado only. If you are a lurker, do NOT try this on your system!
If you are not EverColorado and have a similar problem, do NOT post here; start your own topic
Do not run or start any other programs while these utilities and tools are in use!
Do NOT run any other tools on your own or do any fixes other than what is listed here.
If you have questions, please ask before you do something on your own.
But it is important that you get going on these following steps.
STEP01
Reconfigure Windows XP to show hidden files:
To enable the viewing of Hidden files follow these steps:
* Close all programs so that you are at your desktop.
* Double-click on the My Computer icon.
* Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
* After the new window appears select the View tab.
* Put a checkmark in the checkbox labeled Display the contents of system folders.
* Under the Hidden files and folders section select the radio button labeled Show hidden files and folders.
* Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide file extensions for known file types.
* Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide protected operating system files.
* Press the Apply button and then the OK button and exit My Computer.
* Now your computer is configured to show all hidden files.
STEP02
STEP03
Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools.
This should apply to AVG8:
To disable the Resident Shield, please:
open AVG User Interface
double-click on the Resident Shield
un-tick the option Resident Shield active
save the changes.
STEP04
Please download and run the following file to repair file and registry permissions
fixacl.exe
STEP05
STEP06
Download this INF repair file by MS-MVP Miekiemoes: http://users.telenet.be/bluepatchy/miekiemoes/tools/VArestorepolicies.zip
Unzip the download. Open the folder VArestorepolicies and Right-click the file inside, VArestorepolicies.INF and choose Install
STEP07
If you have a prior copy of Combofix, delete it now !
Download ComboFix from one of these locations, saving to DESKTOP:
Link 1
Link 2
* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop
If your I.E. browser shows a warning message at the top, do a Right-Click on the bar and select Download, saving it to the Desktop.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
Please watch Combofix as it runs, as you may see messages which require your response, or the pressing of OK button.
IF you should see a message like this:

then, be sure to write down fully and also copy that into your next reply here and then await for my response.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.
-------------------------------------------------------
A caution - Do not run Combofix more than once.
Do not touch your mouse/keyboard until the scan has completed, as this may cause the process to stall or your computer to lock.
The scan will temporarily disable your desktop, and if interrupted may leave your desktop disabled.
If this occurs, please reboot to restore the desktop.
Even when ComboFix appears to be doing nothing, look at your Drive light.
If it is flashing, Combofix is still at work.
STEP08
IF and only IF the Combofix has worked without exceptions, only then, do the following. IF it has exceptions, then please provide all details and put that in a reply pronto, and STOP, and await my reply.
Only if Combofix has a good finish:
I'm going to have you get and run a special tool. It will hopefully take out most remains of this beast. Keep in mind that not all files I list here will be found on your system; so do not be alarmed. This is a general-type list of typical infectors.
Download The Avenger by Swandog46 from here.
If you get a blue screen abort when it reboots, please write down all the information, STOP codes and description.
and then reboot the system again.
STEP09
Download DDS and save it to your desktop from one of these 3 locations
1 http://www.techsupportforum.com/sectools/sUBs/dds
2 http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/dds.scr

It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
- Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

- Unzip/extract it to a folder on your desktop.
- Double click on avenger.exe to run The Avenger.
- Click OK.
- Make sure that the box next to Scan for rootkits has a tick in it and that the box next to Automatically disable any rootkits found does not have a tick in it.
- Copy all of the text in the below textbox to the clibpboard by highlighting it and then pressing Ctrl+C.

- Click Yes.
- You will now be asked First step completed --- The Avenger has been successfully set up to run on next boot. Reboot now?.
- Click Yes.
- Your PC will now be rebooted.
- Note: If the above script contains Drivers to delete: or Drivers to disable:, then The Avenger will require two reboots to complete its operation.
- If that is the case, it will force a BSOD on the first reboot. This is normal & expected behaviour.
- After your PC has completed the necessary reboots, a log should automatically open. Please copy/paste the contents of c:\avenger.txt into your next reply.
If you get a blue screen abort when it reboots, please write down all the information, STOP codes and description.
and then reboot the system again.

2 http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/dds.scr
3 http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/dds
Disable any script blocker if your antivirus/antimalware has it.
Then double click dds.scr to run the tool.
When done, DDS.txt will open.
Click Yes at the next prompt for Optional Scan.
- When done, DDS will open two (2) logs:
- DDS.txt
- Attach.txt
- DDS.txt
- Save both reports to your desktop.
DDS.txt
Attach.txt
Please then reply with a copy of C:\Combofix.txt, C:\Avenger.txt, and a new HijackThis

Thank you so much for your immediate response with help. I think I'm at a dead end though. Right now I appear to be stuck at the "Please wait. ComboFix is preparing to run" screen. (I am sending this from my uninfected laptop). I'm pretty sure why this is and should have contacted you sooner. I have been unable to stop the McAfee Total Protection. I was warned by ComboFix not to continue before turning it off but I tried everything (short of stopping some processes) to turn it off. The icon in the task bar is only for updates and when I double-click on the "Total Protection" application from Programs nothing happens. So I continued without stopping it. Its still sitting there waiting, do you have any ideas for me?
Thanks again!
Thanks again!

I decided to end the McShield.exe process, close the ComboFix.exe, and start ComboFix.exe again. It seemed to work. I have the ComboFix.txt, avenger.txt, attach.txt, and dds.txt attached. The higjackthis.log is below.

The logs show that you're running an old version of AVG Anti-Virus as well as McAfee Anti-Virus
You need to remove one of them. You can not run or have installed 2 different Anti-Virus applications as they conflict with each other.
If you want to remove the AVG then there is a document in the Self Help forum to assist.
Once you've removed one of the Anti-Virus packages please do the following.
Please click on START - RUN and type in CMD and hit the ENTER key.
From within this DOS console type in the following and then hit the ENTER key.
sc delete cd403ac2
Let me know what the status said, then quit this DOS box.
Please upload the following files (if found) to check for virus/malware.
Upload these Files to Jotti
Please visit http://virusscan.jotti.org/
Copy/paste this file and path into the white box at the top one by one and scan them:
Please download Avenger 2.0 from here
Open and copy the program file avenger.exe to your Desktop then double click to start it.
Copy and paste the following text from the code box below into the main window of Avenger.
Once Avenger is done run MBAM, go to the UDPATE tab and update the program again and do a Quick Scan.
Fix anything found, then run a new HJT log and post back all logs.

I am working on your latest list of instructions. I updated my AVG and removed the McAfee antivirus through the control panel. When I tried to remove the McAfee Browser Protector Service in the Control Panel it froze up. Now I've somehow lost my wireless drivers and can no longer connect to the Internet. I probably won't get back to you until tomorrow.
Thanks
There are various issues that can cause loss of Internet activity. It could be Malware that is on your system that needs to be removed first, however it could also be from the removal of Malware or similar issues. Step one should be to ensure you remove any Malware from your system first.
Depending on what is wrong there are 3 methods of repair that you can try to re-establish connectivity.
METHOD 1
LSP-Fix
Repairs Winsock 2 settings, caused by buggy or improperly-removed Internet software, that result in loss of Internet access

METHOD 2
WinSock XP Fix 1.2
It can often cure the problem of lost connections after the removal of Adware components or improper uninstall of firewall applications or other tools that modify the XP network and Winsock settings.
If you encounter connection problems after removing network related software, Adware or after registry clean-up; and all other ways fail, then give WinSock XP Fix a try.

METHOD 3
Microsoft KB article to reset TCP/IP
One of the components of the Internet connection on your computer is a built-in set of instructions called TCP/IP. TCP/IP can sometimes become corrupted. If you cannot connect to the Internet and you have tried all other methods to resolve the problem, TCP/IP might be causing it.
Because TCP/IP is a core component of Windows, you cannot remove it. However, you can reset TCP/IP to its original state by using the NetShell utility (netsh)

Thank you for the information about fixing my Internet connection. I will do that after the malware is all gone. The results from this round are as follows:
When I ran at the cmd prompt the response was
[SC] OpenService FAILED 1060
The specified service does not exist as an installed service.
The scan results are attached in the scanResults.txt
The avenger.txt is attached
The mbam-log-2009-02-04(16-18-58).txt is attached. Unfortunately, I could not run an update because I have no Internet. I installed it last Saturday though and ran an update then.
The hijackthis.log is

Round 3 results. When I went to select for the hijack this fix, the following were not on the list.
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ISTray] "C:\Program Files\Spyware Doctor\pctsTray.exe"
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Copernic Desktop Search 2] "C:\Program Files\Copernic Desktop Search 2\DesktopSearchService.exe" /tray
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [RegistryMechanic] C:\Program Files\Registry Mechanic\RegMech.exe /H
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [SpybotSD TeaTimer] C:\Program Files\Spybot - Search & Destroy\TeaTimer.exe
I am hoping this was the case because I had Spyware Doctor, Copernic, and Registry turned off and I deleted Spybot.
I am still struggling with my Internet connection (making some headway) but downloaded the newest definitions on my flash drive with my laptop, applied them, and ran the quick scan. The results were "no malicious items were detected". The javaRa and mabam logs (as text files) are attached. The latest hijackthis is below.
My computer is much better. The only problems (that I can tell anyway) is getting my internet working and some occasionally "instructions cannot be read" message boxes. I looked at your Internet fix connections and hesitated with the first one because it brings up a list of files to choose whether to delete and that intimidated me. I have made some progress though.
Thank you again for all your help.

Please run the following to remove any tools that might have been used during the scaning and cleaning of your system.
STEP 1
Uninstall ComboFix.exe
STEP 2
Uninstall GMER
Click on START - RUN and type in or copy/paste %windir%\gmer_uninstall.cmd to remove GMER.
STEP 3
Uninstall other tools
Please Download OTMoveIt3 by Old Timer and save it to your Desktop.
Download to the desktop: Dr.Web CureIt
STEP 1
Uninstall ComboFix.exe
- Click START then RUN
- Now type Combofix /u (if you renamed Combofix.exe use that name instead) in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the /U, it needs to be there.
-

- When shown the disclaimer, Select "2"
STEP 2
Uninstall GMER
Click on START - RUN and type in or copy/paste %windir%\gmer_uninstall.cmd to remove GMER.
STEP 3
Uninstall other tools
Please Download OTMoveIt3 by Old Timer and save it to your Desktop.
- Double-click OTMoveIt3.exe to run it.
- While connected to the Internet, Click on the green CleanUp! button and it will populate a list of items to clean from your system that we used or may have used.
- It should ask if you want to clean up, select Yes and allow the system to clean up these items.
NOW please reboot your computer to finish the cleanup process
Download to the desktop: Dr.Web CureIt
- Doubleclick the drweb-cureit.exe file and Allow to run the express scan
- This will scan the files currently running in memory and when something is found, click the yes button when it asks you if you want to cure it. This is only a short scan.
- Once the short scan has finished, Click Options > Change settings
- Choose the "Scan"-tab, remove the mark at "Heuristic analysis".
- Back at the main window, mark the drives that you want to scan.
- Select all drives. A red dot shows which drives have been chosen.
- Click the green arrow at the right, and the scan will start.
- Click 'Yes to all' if it asks if you want to cure/move the file.
- When the scan has finished, look if you can click next icon next to the files found:

If so, click it and then click the next icon right below and select Move incurable as you'll see in next image:

This will move it to the %userprofile%\DoctorWeb\quarantaine-folder if it can't be cured. (this in case if we need samples) - After selecting, in the Dr.Web CureIt menu on top, click file and choose save report list
- Save the report to your desktop. The report will be called DrWeb.csv
- Close Dr.Web Cureit.
- Reboot your computer!! Because it could be possible that files in use will be moved/deleted during reboot.
- After reboot, post the contents of the log from Dr.Web you saved previously in your next reply with a new hijackthis log.

Report from round 4.
When I tried to remove ComboFix from the run command I got a prep.com encountered a problem and needs to close. I deleted the directory and exe as suggested.
At the same time my AVG found a threat - File Name: C:\Documents and Settings\Beverly Fay\Local Settings\Temp\21.tmp\b2e.dll. Threat Name: Trojanhorse Back Door SmallX.VX. I clicked Heal.
When I tried to delete GMER - it said it was not found.
The interface for the Dr Web CureIt was not exactly as you described - I may have gotten a diferent version. When I ran the quick scan with Dr. Web CureIt there was one thing found (said it was a McAfee file or something, sorry I didn't write it down). I clicked on CURE button and selected Move Incurable. I found Change Settings under Settings and unchecked "Heuristic analysis". The main screen did not show a way to select all drives so I changed the scan to Complete Scan and clicked the green arrow. It showed all drives would be checked. The scan was running fine and showed the Move Incurable from above and one other thing. I went upstairs for about 10 minutes and when I came back down I had a BSOD. It had the usual generic information and IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL and Technical Information: STOP: 0x0000000A (0x00000023, 0x00000002, 0x00000000, 0x8050C633). Begin physical dump of memory, Memory dump complete. I don't know if any of that information is important but I did not want to run the scan again without asking you. I did have the browser open when I ran it. Any way, I rebooted and did the hijackthis. It is below.

Thanks

Well I would not have expected your system to have anymore infected files on it right now.
If you can do this on your PC that would be great, if not try to do it from a friends PC or a work PC?
Please download this, place a blank CD in your burner and double-click on the downloaded file. It will automatically burn the CD for you.
At the bottom left should be 2 flags. If you use your mouse and click on the British flag the interface should switch to English for you.
Have it scan ALL files. There is no way that I'm aware of to save a log, so you may need to write down any special errors or infections found and their outcome.
Requires access to a working computer with a CD/DVD burner to create a bootable CD.

Just double-click on the rescue system package to burn it to a CD/DVD. You can then use this CD/DVD to boot your computer.
The Avira AntiVir Rescue System is updated several times a day so that the most recent security updates are always available.
Avira AntiVir Rescue System is a Linux-based application that allows accessing computers that cannot be booted anymore. Thus it is possible to:

I will definitely download the file and burn it to a CD. I am confused by your directions though - can you clarify? The following paragraph confuses me:
"Please download this, place a blank CD in your burner and double-click on the downloaded file. It will automatically burn the CD for you.
At the bottom left should be 2 flags. If you use your mouse and click on the British flag the interface should switch to English for you.

I understand the first sentence. Does the rest of the paragraph apply to when I have already have burned the CD and I am using it to boot my infected computer or is it when I'm actually burning the file to the CD? In other words I'm I supposed to
1. Download the file to the link below and burn it to a CD.
2. Place the CD in the drive and reboot the computer.
3 Use F11 during the reboot to go to the CD
4. See the two flags and pick the British one,
5. Run the scan and write down any messages since there is no log
6. Post the results back to this site
Is this correct or if not could you give me better directions?
Thanks

Nope that appears to be correct. You don't have to write down everything it finds. Just a quick synopsis will be fine.

Well, I'm frustrated. I burned the CD, booted up the computer, got to the application, clicked on the flag, clicked 'Start Scan' and nothing happens. Any other ideas? I went to the FAQ page on the site and didn't see any answers. I don't think my computer is completely clean. My SpyDoctor did an Intelliscan earlier and found a low risk Generic Trojan with a registry key. I removed it and did another scan. Said it was clean. I thought it would come back when I rebooted but the newest intelliscan says 0 infections. I am doing a full scan just for good measure.
Thanks again

I have another report. I tried the CD again - it turns out that when the application loads it says 'Scan not started'. As soon as the "Start Scan" button is clicked, it says the scan is finished even though 0 files have been scanned.
While I was doing the full scan with PCTools SpyWare Doctor all of the sudden the AVG Resident Shield opened up with the following appeared (copied into text file):
