Went to restart - and all I can get is a black screen w/a blinking cursor. No windows home page no start menu no nothing.

Now what?

restarted manually, held down f8 key, now it says:

reboot & select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot drive & press a key

I have no idea what it's telling me to do or why.

All i wanted to do yesterday was update malwarebytes & restart the computer

Hello and :welcome:

This may be silly, but do you have a usb flash drive inserted or do you have a CD in the CD tray, if so remove them and try to reboot once again.

No, nothing inserted in any drive. Turned the computer off before bed last night, turned it on this morning - it DID briefly show the startup screen from HP (where I can choose like f9 or f11).

Then a black screen with white letters came up - couldn't copy it all down, but:
Intel UNDI, PXE-21 (build 083)
bunch of stuff about patents
Client MAC ADDR 64 31 50 33 2454 GUID... something... ended in DHCP... with a scrolling cursos

That was up a few seconds,

then there was a fast message about No Boot Filename Received and now the original message I posted about reboot is on the screen.
