Hello, you've managed to get me working again and I still have things I know I have to do but...now I'm working on my wife's computer. I've downloaded the malwarebytes program and it kept getting hung up (not-responding) so I downloaded the Avira personal antivirus and it found some items. I tried malwarebytes again and it sometimes it gets hung up and sometimes it works so I'm not sure what is going on. Anyway, I ran it tonight and it ran all the way through (quick scan) said things were clean but here is the hijack this log file. Please advise on what to do next. Thanks! - JFT

• Place a blank CD in your burner and double-click on the downloaded file.
  
• The program will automatically burn the CD for you.
  
• Place the burned CD into the affected computer and start the computer from this CD.
  
• On the bottom left side of the screen there are 2 flags. Using your mouse click on the British flag to use English.
  
• Click on the Configuration button.
  
  • Select Scan all files
    
  • Select Try to repair infected files and Rename files, if they cannot be removed
    
  • Select Scan for dialers
    
  • Select Scan for joke programs (Jokes)
    
  • Select Scan for games

Yes, this is "JFT" working on my wife's computer.

ok, I tried booting with the Avira disk but I had the screen resolution problems. I clicked on the post discussing that and I honestly didn't understand what I was supposed to do when it said run Antivir from the "command line". What's that?
So, I hit CTRL-ALT-backspace and that closed the GUI and I typed the text "antivir --allfiles -z -ren /mnt/" but that didn't really do anything. Also, I had to figure out what keys on the keyboard corresponded to the "-", "/" and "z" characters because it was in German(?) and the keyboard wasn't placing the correct symbols. Am I making any sense? Sorry I'm a computer dope and thanks for your help. ugh.

The freezing is likely caused by running two Anti-Virus programs, please remove eitehr AntiVir or Symantec. Then try a Quick Scan and post the results. Thanks

I'm sorry, I don't understand what your reply has to do with not being able to run the Avira rescue program. However, I did remove the Avira Antivir personal and ran a malwarebytes scan. The quick scan seems to take a while, compared to the other computer I've been working on. I think it was 50 minutes, but it found no infections. I am not at that computer right now so I cannot post a log. If you can explain how to resolve the screen resolution issues then I can try the Rescue CD again. Thanks.

Currently there really is no fix for the screen resolution. They're working on an update supposedly but it won't be done for another month or so.

Sorry to be a bit behind, but I've had a couple users post with multiple systems and I should not have allowed that. That just made the scan/clean process confusing for both of us.

Okay, so based on the logs above this computer appears to be okay aside from an entry for some old Java.
Have you done any recent Anti-Virus scans on this computer and what was the results?
Can this computer connect to the Internet and get updates?

Are there other issues or signs of infection on the computer referenced in the logs just above?

The ISP we use just changed antivirus software on us, we now have the AT&T Internet Security Suite by McAfee. She just installed it the other day and things were clean. She can access the Internet and get updates. I am not aware of any other issues.

Do you recommend anything else other than the boilerplate posting about how to not get infected in the future and the recommended programs?

No not really, the boilerplate posting should cover most bases. Using Firefox with NoScript and AdBlock Plus is a very good way to browse and help stay safe from a LOT of threats. Takes some training but a good program. There is also a product named SandBoxie that is very good, but you need to read and understand it and how it works.
