Malwarebytes tray Icon disapeared after 1.65.0.1400 upgrade

Recommended Posts

I updated my paid version to 1.65. The computer took a long time to display my desktop. Win XP Pro SP3 with latest Windows updates. After that, the computer would freeze (within minutes). Task Manager showed 51% cpu and when clicked the shutdown menu in Task Manager, nothing happened. Had to hold the power button on the tower to shutdown. Restarted multiple times, same general result with different details. I also tried uninstalling Malwarebytes 1.65 (from the Start Menu>All Programs>Malwarebytes> and rebooting and installing 1.65. No luck, same symptoms. I've not had problems with Malwarebytes before (for years?).

Hi, Brion S: :)

Welcome.

Your problem seems to be different -- and a bit more complicated -- than the missing system tray icon others are reporting in this topic.

So, a mod may wish to split off your post to a new, separate thread. :)

Since you report that MBAM PRO had been working fine until the most recent version update, the first thing to try would be a clean reinstall (which involves running a cleanup tool).

The instructions for that process are listed below.

If that doesn't work, then please let us know - the experts will likely need a bit more info about your system in order to advise you further.

HTH,

  • If you are running MBAM PRO, please be sure you have your license ID and key available (sent via email at the time of online purchase, or in the box).

You can also look up your ID and Key from the Registry and copy and paste it to a Notepad document before running the mbam-clean utility.

Location for Windows x86

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

Location for Windows x64

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Download and run mbam-clean.exe from HERE.
  • It will ask to restart your computer; please allow it to do so - this is very important!
  • After the computer restarts, download the latest version of Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from HERE, then temporarily disable your Anti-Virus and run the installer. (Ignore all 'Recommended' or 'Sponsored' software which are prominently displayed on the mirror sites -- they are ads and MBAM does not have any association with them.)
  • If you are using MBAM PRO, you will need to reactivate (register) the program using the license ID & key.
  • Launch the MBAM program and (if you are using MBAM PRO) set the Protection and Registration.
  • Then go to the UPDATE tab (if not done during installation) and check for updates.
  • Restart the computer again and verify that MBAM is in the system tray (if using the PRO version).
  • Now set up any file exclusions, as may be required in your Anti-Virus/Internet-Security/Firewall applications, and restart your Anti-Virus/Internet-Security applications. You may use the guides posted in the FAQs HERE, or ask and we'll explain how to do it.

To Forum Deity,

I did all the steps. The icon is there, but it looks darker. Right-clicking and clicking Start Scanner>Protection Tab yields red rectangle with "Protection disabled." The two check boxes above it are unchecked and are not check-able. At boot-up, the long delay to display the desktop icons and Windows bar, is back (just the desktop background and mouse pointer are there.

Please run the following scanner and send back the logs.

Download DDS from one of the locations below and save to your Desktop

dds.scr

dds.com

Temporarily disable any script blocker if your Anti-Virus/Anti-Malware has it.

How To Temporarily Disable Your Anti-virus, Firewall And Anti-malware Programs

Once downloaded you can disconnect from the Internet and disable your Ant-Virus temporarily if needed.

Then double click dds.scr or dds.com to run the tool, on Vista or Win 7 right click and select Run as administrator

Click the Run button if prompted with an Open File - Security Warning dialog box.

A black DOS console should open and run for a moment.

  • When done, DDS will open two (2) logs:
  1. DDS.txt
  2. Attach.txt

  • Save both reports to your desktop
  • Please include the following logs in your next reply: DDS.txt and Attach.txt
You can ignore the note about zipping the Attach.txt file in most cases.

I also upgraded from 1.62 with WinXP - never a problem until now. The icon isn't showing and I can't set protection on. I followed all of the above steps carefully and rebooted 3 times, but the icon doesn't show. I click the desktop icon and cannot set protection.

dskirk, kindly start your own topic, this is to prevent confusion as to who is being helped, and also because what applies to one computer may not apply to yours as everyone's computer is different.

Initially just reboot the computer. If that does not work then launch the program. Open the protection tab and if they're not enabled make sure you have "Start protection module with Windows" checked and both protection modules enabled. On slower computers you may need to wait up to 10 seconds or more after clicking each of the modules until it loads, please be patient as it is a live change not just a check mark.

Then reboot the computer again and it should come up okay.

@Brion Shimamoto

Your event logs show that you have other issues going on with your computer. It could be due to your Anti-Virus, or an infection, or a software conflict.

Please contact the help desk and they will assist you with your issue.

hoping someone will have something to try in the near future.

Hi, Brion S:

Thanks for the update.

There's no reason the new version shouldn't run on a properly configured XP system that's not infected and not suffering from other issues.

So, if you're still unable to update to 1.65, then it would be a good idea to follow forum Admin AdvancedSetup's advice and have one of the helpdesk experts check your system. :)

They can be reached here:

http://www.malwareby...ntact_consumer/

Just a suggestion, :)
