This virus blocks me from using any IM programs, slows down my PC, blocks most internet sites (except google and gmail). I'm running malwarebytes antimalware. Its been going for upwards of 7hrs. Its now at the C:/windows/winsxs directory. So far, nothing is showing up as infected.

Its going incredibly slow, should I restart and try again? After its done I plan to run hijackthis and post the logs of both here. Am I doing the instructions correctly? thanks!

PS the virus refuses to allow an update so its from 2/21 I believe. I did try to remame it before I started it but it still would not allow an update.

Update and Scan with Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

• Start MalwareBytes AntiMalware (Vista users must Right click and choose RunAs Admin)
  
• Please DO NOT run MBAM in Safe Mode unless requested to, you MUST run it in normal Windows mode.
  
  • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    
  • Select the Update tab
    
  • Click Update
• When the update is complete, select the Scanner tab
  
• Select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  
• When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  
• Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  
• When completed, a log will open in Notepad. please copy and paste the log into your next reply
  • If you accidently close it, the log file is saved here and will be named like this:
    
  • C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt

Then post back the MBAM log and a new Hijackthis log.

Well my I think things are better. I tried running trend micro housecall and got this - not sure if its just their site though
"An error occurred while trying to transfer data from the Internet! Do you want Trend Micro HouseCall to try resending the required files?"

I'm running kaspersky now to see if it happens to say anything. If not I guess Im' in the clear. Was it the hijack this that fixed it? since the malwarebytes never found anything?

So how did I get infected in the first place?


[indent]At this time your system appears to be clean. Nothing else in the logs indicates that you are still infected.
Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:


Disable and Enable System Restore-VISTA

This is a good time to clear your existing system restore points and establish a new clean restore point:

Turn off System Restore-Vista

• Click the Vista/Start icon.
  
• Right Click >> Computer
  
• Click Properties.
  
• Click the System Protection tab.
  
• Uncheck All drives
  
• Click "Turn Off System Restore" at the prompt then click "Apply".
  
• Restart your computer.

Turn ON System Restore-Vista

• Click the Vista/Start icon
  
• Right Click >> Computer
  
• Click Properties.
  
• Click the System Protection tab.
  
• Checkmark All drives that were selected previously then click "Apply".

This will remove all restore points except the new one you just created.

Enable automatic Windows Update on your system in Control Panel, or at least manually scan each week for updates.

The windows firewall is not sufficient to protect your system. It doesn't monitor outgoing traffic well and this is a must. I recommend Comodo Firewall Pro
