Hehehe. I need to warm up to garlic, it's sooo good for you.... not a huge bacon fan. I love herbal tea.

I exercise 5-6 days a week and I drink a LOT of water. I don't get sick very much, a (sometimes bad) cold or two every year is about the worst I usually get.

@Screen317

Yeah. I don't take a lot of things too seriously that I read, especially if they don't seem well researched or well thought-out, but, it makes for an intresting read. Exercise and having enough fluid in your body does make a lot of sense, though.

@GT500

I also try to avoid high fructose corn syrup especially. One, because it's horrible for you, and two, I really really disagree with it's usage in foods entirely, and I do not want it in my body if I can help it.

@Exile360

That would be ever so nice, but unfortunately we can't all do that ;) Sometimes I wish I didn't have to have contact with others, ha!

Well, I consume tons of fructose (it's in everything I eat and drink), all I ever drink is soda (never juice, water or anything else), I only consume fast food, I never exercise, I don't eat pork (so no bacon) and you'll seldom find garlic in fast food so that's out.

All of the above is accurate, yet I don't get sick. Not a single sniffle, no fevers, nothing. The only thing I do is stay away from people.

Ah yes, I also smoke just over a pack of cigarettes a day (and they are not lights), which is supposed to compromise your immune system.

So, what you're saying Samuel, is that if you ever go out in public then you're going to suffer something worse than bubonic plague?

Hehe, no, I'm just very antisocial. Not everyone can live as I do, nor do I expect them to, but one of the nifty benefits of it is that I do not get sick.

It's the same as disconnecting your computer from the internet and never going online. Your PC will never get infected, but of course you lose all the benefits that the internet has to offer.

Isn't the flu normally caused by a virus? Antibiotics don't effect viruses, and antivirals are typically not effective enough against something like the flu to justify their side effects. Normally you just do your best to treat the symptoms and boost your immune system with proper nutrition, and that's pretty much all you can do with a cold or a flu.

Yep. The overuse of antibiotics in this country, especially for VIRUSES is disgusting. It's already causing problems :/

Also there's no reason for "anti-bacterial" soap. 20-30 seconds w water and soapy suds gets rid of bacteria. All the added stuff to soap does is create resistant bacteria.

Anyway, I think I got off track here.

Rest, fluids, good nutrition, and chicken soup are the best medicines. :)

Also, if you're not diabetic, then a little extra sugar (sucrose and glucose, as increasing fructose intake by itself can cause malabsorption) can help as well, as your body will need the extra energy to fight off the infection. Taking ATP (adenosine triphosphate) may help as well, if you can't (or don't want to) increase your sugar intake.

Good to know Arthur!! I drink 50 calorie light ocean spray cranberry juice (it's 50% juice to boot) anyway, so maybe I'll have a little extra tonight. No fake sugar or hfcs in it :)

I been homebound for a year+ due to medical and my wife runs a tight ship about me getting the right nutrients, proteins; the right solid food etc and don't forget the Flu shot.

Back in the days of ways, I would get sumpin, sumpin from the OTC and shoot back 2 JDs to boot.

Today its bit completed with new flu,virus strains in the fight. Keeping the proper diet these days is tough due to very busy/hectic schedules/ stress and lifestyles. Slow down, the one thing I've learn 30yrs of construction is to avoid heated or hot rooms/trailers if possible when someone is sick, its a good dish in getting sick yourself

Doing the best that we can under our own personal circumstances is all we can do to keep ourselves from getting sick. :)

Avoiding germ hotspots, when possible, is also a good way to minimize your risk of getting sick. :)

For the record, influenza can be a serious, even fatal, disease.

This year's seasonal flu has been extremely widespread & severe.

There have been many deaths, including in children.

I have been receiving frequent updates from the CDC and from my state and local health departments about it.

I agree with screen317's observations here:

To everyone worried about the flu, some of the tips in that link were fine, like getting the flu shot, washing your hands often, and getting enough sleep. but the research behind a lot of others on the list is not convincing at all. http://forums.malwar...ndpost&p=632150

There is a lot of misinformation in cyberspace & in the media -- at both extremes, both downplaying the risk and creating "FUD", not only about the flu, but also about the flu vaccine.

So, please consider the following credible sources for accurate & timely information, especially regarding the importance of vaccination for high-risk individuals:

Stay well,

daledoc1 (No, I didn't stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night ;))

PS As this is a computer forum, not WebMD, this will be my only post in this topic. As a healthcare provider, however, I want to provide a reliable source for information about this very serious illness.
