Malwarebytes found a file infected which I Quarantined and deleted successfully. Can I retrieve it

Recommended Posts

I ran a 'Quick scan' a few minutes ago and Malwarebytes said I have this "Stolen.Data" 'Scanner'. It shows a green check mark and Green Bug on the line and it points to this location:

C:\Users\Username\AppData\Roaming\SAS7_000.DAT

This may be linked a a 'simconnect' program, (I fly Flight Sims; FSX), so I don't want to be too hasty and delete it. In fact, I'm not so sure it's a problem at this point and that's why I'm posting here today.

Thanks, Rich

Hello and welcome, wingclip: :)

I'm pretty sure the experts would need more information in order to determine if the detection you describe might be a False Positive (FP).

If you think that's the case, please start by following the steps described here: READ BEFORE REPORTING A FALSE POSITIVE!

Then, please start a new post with the requested information here: False Positives Forum.

OTOH, if you think you might be infected, please follow the recommendations in this pinned topic: Available Assistance For Possibly Infected Computers.

A qualified helper will guide you through the diagnostics and cleanup process.

Thanks,

If you think that's the case, please start by following the steps described here: READ BEFORE REPORTING A FALSE POSITIVE!

Then, please start a new post with the requested information here: False Positives Forum.

(Generally one needs to reboot the system to be able to restore an item from the quarantine, if you need to do that. However, I am not qualified or authorized to advise you as to whether it is safe to do so -- that's why it's important to submit the requested info to the engineers for analysis.)

OTOH, if you think you might be infected, please follow the recommendations in this pinned topic: Available Assistance For Possibly Infected Computers.

Hello, thewiolfe: :)

Until one of the experts or staff arrives, please see my reply in your other, separate topic:

http://forums.malwar...ndpost&p=679671

and in post#2 above in this thread.

They contain some suggestions on how to proceed to submit the necessary information to determine if this might be a False Positive, or to get help with checking your system for malware.

Thanks,

Recovered file and it's got registry entries that I can't figure out what they're involved with.

I can't find it in the quarantine list to restore it although I have a copy of the file saved to my Desktop.

So your saying this is not a "bad guy" and I can relax a little?

How would a file like that get in there? I mean one that says "stolen data" is a might subspecies and with reg keys in it.

So anyway, I'm good to go?

And another question: How could a file named "....stolen data" get downloaded to my computer. Shouldn't I be concerned how it got there?

Also, a "false positive" was mentioned about that file when Malwarebytes found it. I know what "false positive" means but how does that relate to a file that is on my computer that I didn't create. If Malwarebytes says it's a virus and then it's not, that I would understand would be a "false positive". But how could it not be a worry if I didn't create the file and it's named '.......stolen data" and it's on my computer?
