Hi all. Lately my pc seems very weird. When I go to open internet or email, the window takes about 10 seconds to open, then they are blank for another 10. Lots of other programs -mbam included- do the same. I did recently install that new Internet Explorer 8. Anyway, here's my logs, and here's hoping. Thanks for your time. Rick

Hi,
This smells like you're dealing with the new Win32:Daonoll variant. This one is responsible for "locking" a lot of (commandline)tools, plus cmd, regedit etc.. blocking updates etc...
MalwareBytes does detect this variant, but since you can't update, we need to deal with this manually.
Navigate to your C:\Windows folder and search for the file regedit.exe
Rightclick it and select to rename the file. Rename it to reg3dit.exe
Then launch the reg3dit.exe in order to open your Registry Editor.
There, browse to the following key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\drivers32
You'll see on the left that you can expand the keys (they will look like folders). So expand them until you get drivers32
Rightclick the drivers32 key (folder) and select to export:

(sorry, my regedit is in dutch, but I'm sure you understand)
Give it a name and export it as a txtfile on your desktop.
Then copy and paste the contents of it in your next reply.
If confused, please ask first.

Hi miekiemoes, thanks very much for your attention.I'm sorry to admit it, but I am slightly confused here. You mention about my not being able to update, yet I am having no troubles updating any of my AV, Spyware or even MBAM, and accessing Windows update center is no problem. In fact, I just did updates before I came on here. I am also able to open the reg editor from the start menu.

Aaah.
So this is basically no malware problem then? We assume since you post in the Malware forums that you're dealing with malware.
The fact that your mbam database version was outdated and you get a lot of blank pages reminds me of this new variant almost everyone is dealing with.
Anyway, is it possible that these problems started after installation of IE8?

Hi again. Well, miekiemoes, I don't know whether it is a malware problem or not--that's why I came to the experts. When I do get the blank pages tho, it is only for a few seconds, then whatever program opens up ok. If I recall, this trouble did start after installing IE8, but not immediately. Thanks again for your time. Rick

Hi,
I think it's because of an incompatibility issue in IE8. Could be one of your Browser addons causing this, could be your Avast or your Firewall. This because all of them have most effect on/in IE.
Let's try first with disabling add-ons..
To run Internet Explorer 8 without Add-ons, rightclick the IE8 icon present on your desktop and select: "Start without Add-ons"
In case that option is not present there, go to start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Internet Explorer (No Add-ons)
This will start Internet Explorer 8 in the No-Add ons mode. This means that toolbars and Browser Helper Objects will be disabled.
So if your problem is solved when you use the No-Add on mode, this means that one of your Add ons is causing this.
Let me know if your problem is solved in the No-Add on mode.
I know above screenshots apply for IE7, but it works the same in IE8

Hello again. I did as you suggested, and when I clicked to open IE, all i saw was my desktop for about 5 seconds, then the IE window opened and was blank for another 5 seconds. Then it opened and I got the message about it running with no add ons. This is almost sounding to be more of a technical problem than a malware one, isn't it? Thanks again. Rick

Hi Rick,
After your second post where you posted more information, it doesn't look like a malware problem anyway.
As I already said in my previous post:
So since disabling add-ons didn't make any difference, I guess it's time to test your Firewall and Avast. Maybe one of them has issues with IE8. I suggest you start with your Sunbelt firewall.
The best way to properly troubleshoot is to temporary uninstall the firewall, reboot and check IE8 again. Disabling a firewall isn't enough to properly troubleshoot, that's why it should be disabled instead.
If no luck and still the same issue, do the same with Avast.
You can reinstall Avast and Firewall afterwards again, but the only way to properly troubleshoot is to remove potential causes to see what is exactly causing it.

Hello again. Well, I guess we are ruling out any kind of evil bugs in my machine, so I am happy enough with that. I can live with the internet being a touch slow. Was just kinda worried about some malware, is all. Again, thanks very much for your time and effort. Rick
