Windows XP/Pro SP2 (IE 7 installed) - The Windows User Accounts window opens fine from the Control Panel and manages all the accounts on the computer on the account that I primarily use (admin privileges). The User Accounts window will not open from the other accounts on the computer (one admin and two limited) erroring out with an Internet Explorer Script error message (see image). The only way I've found to get rid of the message (also the blank User Accounts window) is to log off or stop the mshta.exe service. Clicking "Ok" or "Cancel" have no results. I first noticed the issue several months ago. I can't tie it to any software install, and it's way too late to try a system restore. I tried creating a new user account, but it had the problem too. I've poked around the web, but haven't found an answer. Can anyone help, or suggest a forum to try for help?

I would start by making sure there isn't any Malware on the system and then go from there.

Thank you for the response.

I ran a Malwarebytes quickscan (V1.35 database 1945) and a full scan with Norton 360V3 this morning. Both came up clean. I'm fairly sure the box is malware free.

I've poked around the web some more and with better crafted searches found similar issues to mine and one that appeared exactly the same. In the one that was the same, the person uninstalled IE 7 (which reinstalls IE 6), and his problem went away. I uninstalled IE 7, and after applying an armload of MS security updates to IE 6 find that the issue is resolved. It's still a bit odd in that the two other computers I have which run similar software don't have the issue with IE 7. I've cranked the security settings up on IE 6 and as I only use it for MS updates, I think I'm ok with it.

Do you recommend that I go ahead and run Hijackthis and post it appropriately?

Well if your system is not fully up to date you could try these updates and see if it helps. Especially the Windows Script as there are a few posts with issues similar that were fixed by the javascript portion that this update should include.

Potential installation fixes

• Service Pack 6 for Visual Basic 6.0
  
• Windows Script 5.7 for Windows XP
  
• Windows Installer 4.5 Redistributable
  
• After installation visit the Microsoft Windows Update site and obtain ALL critical updates: update.microsoft.com

You could also try this tool. As with any updates or tools being run on your system you should make sure you have valid backups of your system and data.

If that doesn't get it (although I suspect Dial-a-fix will do it) you can try the fix I used when I had a similar issue after installing IE8 (it failed to reregister certain files used for rendering many Control Panel applets as well as some of my SideBar gadgets). Just run each of these from a command prompt exactly as written (you can copy and paste to make it easier) and press enter after each line:

regsvr32 msxml3.dll
regsvr32 scrrun.dll
regsvr32 jscript.dll

Note: These commands need to be run from an administrative user account.

My system is fairly uptodate, but I went ahead and installed the three potential installation fixes from AdvancedSetup and ran Dial-a-Fix which had a few errors. Log follows. I also tried registering the DLL's as recommended by exile 360 but one of them failed (failure pop up follows the Dial-a-Fix log). The original issue with IE 7 is still there.
