Symptoms are these: My AVG 8.5 update has been failing the last three days or so (I have successfully updated manually by downloading update files from the AVG site then using AVG's utility that updates from the hard drive).
Also, I've been getting redirected to ad sites while doing searches.
I ran Malware Bytes updated 3/26/09 and it found one infected object in the registry, which it removed.
The problems remain.

Hi,
Can you update Malwarebytes, because we are april 6 today and MBAM updates at least 3 times each day.
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediatly.
In case you're having problems with updating mbam via the update option, it's important to let me know.
Quote
I ran Malware Bytes updated 3/26/09 and it found one infected object in the registry, which it removed.
- Start MalwareBytes and click the Update tab. There click "Check for updates"
- Once the updates are downloaded, perform a full scan again.
- The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
- When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
- Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
- When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
- The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
- Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log, then we'll proceed from there with new steps.

I tried updating when I first installed and it failed. I assumed then that was the fault of what ever is on my computer and that I would not be able to update from the computer as a result.
After reading your reply I've tried update 3 times. First time I got an error message forcing Malwarebyte to close and send a message to Microsoft. Second time update failed. Third time I got a message that says "You have the latest database version."
Indeed I did download the Malware Byts this morning.
(But the version I downloaded said it was the 3/26/2009 version. I'm not sure what that means.)

Hi,
Looks like you don't have the latest database after all.
Anyway,
This smells like you're dealing with the new Win32:Daonoll variant. This one is responsible for "locking" a lot of (commandline)tools, plus cmd, regedit etc.. blocking updates etc...
MalwareBytes does detect this variant, but since you can't update, we need to deal with this manually.
Navigate to your C:\Windows folder and search for the file regedit.exe
Rightclick it and select to rename the file. Rename it to reg3dit.exe
Then launch the reg3dit.exe in order to open your Registry Editor.
There, browse to the following key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\drivers32
You'll see on the left that you can expand the keys (they will look like folders). So expand them until you get drivers32
Rightclick the drivers32 key (folder) and select to export:

Give it a name and export it as a txtfile on your desktop.
Then copy and paste the contents of it in your next reply.
If confused, please ask first.
Extra note.. after you have used the renamed regedit.exe (reg3dit.exe), look in your Windows folder if Windows File Protection placed a new regedit.exe there again (it should). If not, then rename reg3dit.exe back to regedit.exe.

Looks like it worked. I was now able to update AVG successfully.
I also ran the Malware Bytes update utility successfully.
I've done a couple of random Google searches and I am not seeing any re-direction.
Thank you.
If you have any going-forward advice I'd welcome it.
Also, I know you're busy, but if you could direct me to where I could learn more about this particular infection, and how I managed to get it despite my AVG anti-virus program I'd be most grateful.
Have a good day.

Thank you.
If you have any going-forward advice I'd welcome it.
Also, I know you're busy, but if you could direct me to where I could learn more about this particular infection, and how I managed to get it despite my AVG anti-virus program I'd be most grateful.
Have a good day.

Hi,
I've actually blogged about this infection a couple of months ago:
http://miekiemoes.blogspot.com/2008/10/fak...archengine.html
Previous variants used other files. It has updated itself and uses random filenames now.
People get with it infected through legitimate sites. Sites that were compromised. In some cases, it's the webhost that is responsible for it. Also read here: http://miekiemoes.blogspot.com/2009/01/ix-...g-reliable.html
To prevent this, Make sure your programs are up to date (especially adobe reader, since this infection may come via pdf as well) - because older versions may contain Security Leaks. To find out what programs need to be updated, please run the Secunia Software Inspector Scan.
Happy Surfing again!
