Hi,
Thanks very much for the help. I hope I posted in the right place now. :D
I did have some trojans which were discovered by Kaspersky online scan. I deleted the infected files, but I don't know if my computer is clean yet. Mcafee and MBAM find nothing.
Trojan-Downloader.HTML.Agent.mx
Trojan-Spy.HTML.Bayfraud.hn

Several programs are still crashing-pretty much anything requiring internet access- and trying to use google ends up in redirects to other pages. I am unable to go to the mcafee website and I can't get any MBAM updates. I downloaded MBAM yesterday. (Thursday 4/9). I see some suspicious items, but I will leave it to the professionals as to what items should be removed. New York Times is my homepage, but some look pretty sketchy.

I took a bunch of junk domains off of my hosts page that spybot search and destroy had put there long ago, then restarted my computer, but that did not help.

Is there recommended antivirus software to use besides the Mcafee?

Thanks again!

Hi,

The database version is oudated. I know you can't update via the update tab, so...
  • Please download and install the database from here. Only do this when the update option doesn't work.
  • Once the updates are downloaded, perform a full scan again.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log, then we'll proceed from there with new steps.
Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediatly.

Hi Meike,
Thank you very much. That did the trick! :D Log files are below. I am still not allowed to get anti-virus updates from McAfee or MBAM. Some programs still crashing as before, though I am not seeing redirects so far and browsing is much faster. I await your advice.

Good morning,
I restarted my computer again. The redirecting seems to have stopped. But programs that use the internet-including MBAM-still crash when I try to get something online. I am still unable to connect to mcafee website also. I can't even go to the main domain and I can't get updates. Thank you again for all of your help.

Hi,

It looks like you got reinfected again then... This happens frequently with this infection since it's spread via legitimate websites.
Can you run mbam again and post the log?

Also do next..

* Please visit this webpage for instructions for downloading and running ComboFix:

http://www.bleepingc...to-use-combofix

Post the log from ComboFix in your next reply.

Please make sure you disable ALL of your Antivirus/Antispyware/Firewall before running ComboFix..This because Security Software may see some components ComboFix uses (prep.com for example) as suspicious and blocks the tool, or even deletes it. Please visit HERE if you don't know how.

Extra note: The combofix tutorial recommends to disable your Antivirus, in your case McAfee. For McAfee, I rather recommend to temporary uninstall it, because Mcafee causes a lot of problems with Combofix after reboot, this because McAfee enables again after reboot. So please temporary uninstall McAfee first, then reboot and then scan with Combofix.

Hmmm. This page for combo fix won't resolve for me. I tried it with IE, Firefox and Safari. It says that the page is done but it is blank. Is this a virus thing?

I will re-run mbam again. Thanks.

Hi,

THis looks OK again.

* Go to start > run and copy and paste next command in the field:

ComboFix /u

Make sure there's a space between Combofix and /
Then hit enter.

This will uninstall Combofix, delete its related folders and files, reset your clock settings, hide file extensions, hide the system/hidden files and resets System Restore again.

Then go to start > run and copy and paste next command in the field: sc delete Pcsvcvcacnn

Hit enter.

Let me know in your next reply how things are now.

Hi Mieke,
Good news! I can go to the mcafee website again! I take this as a good sign. :D
I'm going to get some antivirus software on the computer again and then I'll do some more testing.

I had this same issue and followed the steps here with success. I posted my log at:
http://www.malwareby...showtopic=14030
I did not want to hijack this thread.
Thank you all for the help.

Glad I could help. :D

Please read my Prevention page with lots of info and tips how to prevent this in the future.
And if you want to improve speed/system performance after malware removal, take a look here.
Extra note: Make sure your programs are up to date - because older versions may contain Security Leaks. To find out what programs need to be updated, please run the Secunia Software Inspector Scan.

Happy Surfing again!

Hi Mieke,
Thank you so much for your kind help. My computer was reinfected with the same result: no infections shown for MBAM or Mcafee but programs crash, etc. I ran combo fix again and my results are below. It again fixed the whatever this thing is.

Hi,

Please navigate to the following file: C:\Qoobox\quarantine\C\windows\qti.rkb.vir
Upload the file here: http://www.bleepingc...e.php?channel=8

Combofix already fixed it here.

The reason why you got infected is because you've visited the same infected site again, or launched the same PDF. This one is being spread via legitimate sites, so I suggest you use Firefox as your browser for now in combination with the No script extension. Also, please update your Adobe PDF Reader.
This will prevent reinfection.
