Any help is greatly appreciated. I seem to be seeing more pop-ups and I am guessing this is the reason.

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware 1.35
Database version: 1925

First of all, please update MalwareBytes, because the databaseversion and program is outdated.

  • Start MalwareBytes and click the Update tab. There click "Check for updates"
  • In case you can't update the database via the update option, please download and install the database from here. Only do this when the update option doesn't work.
  • Once the updates are downloaded, perform a full scan again.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log, then we'll proceed from there with new steps.
Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove,you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts,click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer,please do so immediatly.

Here is the malware log and the new Hijackthis log. Malwarebytes claims that it will delete on re-boot but it detects the files again (even on a quick scan).

Hi,

So from what I understand here, it detects everything again after reboot? It doesn't really make sense though and is confusing since some entries should be listed in your HijackThislog as well and they don't.

Anyway, * Please visit this webpage for instructions for downloading and running ComboFix:

http://www.bleepingc...to-use-combofix

Post the log from ComboFix in your next reply.

Please make sure you disable ALL of your Antivirus/Antispyware/Firewall before running ComboFix..This because Security Software may see some components ComboFix uses (prep.com for example) as suspicious and blocks the tool, or even deletes it. Please visit HERE if you don't know how.

Extra note: The combofix tutorial recommends to disable your Antivirus, in your case McAfee. For McAfee, I rather recommend to temporary uninstall it, because Mcafee causes a lot of problems with Combofix after reboot, this because McAfee enables again after reboot. So please temporary uninstall McAfee first, then reboot and then scan with Combofix.

And, most important thing of all, please allow Combofix to install the Recovery Console, because I have the feeling that some system files are probably infected here..

Hi,

Please log in under the msimons.000 account and run Combofix from there and post the log. This because the problem is located on that account.

msimons.ooo is not an admin user. If I run the application (runas utilzing admin log-in) I get a CFScript Name Error. It asks "Were you trying to run CFScript? The name, CFScript appears to be incorrectly spelt" and an OK button. When I click OK the combofix stops running.

What should I do?

Thanks,

AAh ok.
It's strange, since it's not an admin user that it got infected. Anyway, we can delete the files from there, but the leftovers in the registry should be done manually from that account.

So stick with this admin account for Combofix and we'll see if the script will work and deal with it.

* Open notepad - don't use any other texteditor than notepad or the script will fail.
Copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into notepad:

Quote

File::
c:\documents and settings\msimons.000\Local Settings\Application Data\Wqejaxu.bin
c:\documents and settings\msimons.000\Local Settings\Application Data\Mbobe.dat
c:\documents and settings\msimons.000\Local Settings\Application Data\mapuqct.dll
c:\documents and settings\msimons.000\Local Settings\Application Data\oxejuqodihod.dll
DirLook::
c:\documents and settings\msimons.000\Local Settings\Application Data\{1BEEAE1B-FCA3-4125-9D6A-BC49F90EDE51}

Save this as txtfile CFScript

Then drag the CFScript into ComboFix.exe as you see in the screenshot below.

This will start ComboFix again. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), post the contents of Combofix.txt in your next reply.

For the registry values, you have to delete them manually from the msimons.000 account, because they are only present on that account. Both values that need to get deleted are "xmacuje" and "qluqonora" under the key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

I don't know if there's registry access to that account or not and who's the admin. As long as it is a restricted account, we won't be able to fix anything there either. It's the system admin who should take care of that since it's not our job to mess with these privileges :P

By the way, these can be ignored:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System\NoDispScrSavPage (Hijack.DisplayProperties) -> Bad: (1) Good: (0) -> No action taken.
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System\NoDispAppearancePage (Hijack.DisplayProperties) -> Bad: (1) Good: (0) -> No action taken.

It's no malware, but probably set up like that here - especially since this looks like a company owned computer.

Here is the new Combofix Log. I will attempt to delete the registry entries with msimons.000 logged in. Thanks for the help.

By the way, exactly which registry entries should I delete?

When I had msimons.000 log in I got two RUNDLL errors stating "Error loading C:\Documents and Settings\msimons.ooo\Local Settings\Application Data\oxejuqodihod.dll The specified module could not be found." and "Error loading C:\Documents and Settings\msimons.ooo\Local Settings\Application Data\mapuqct.dll The speficied module could not be found."

If this is a good thing (which I think it is), I still need to find what is trying to access those .dll files.

Hi,

Combofix worked OK here. I guess malwarebytes couldn't delete it from the other one because of the restrictions.

If registry can be accessed there via that useraccount, then you can actually also do it with a registry script to fix it, so do next.. ON THE msimons.000 ACCOUNT, otherwise it won't fix them since they are not present on other accounts. So from that accout (msimons.000)

Open notepad and copy and paste next present in the quotebox below in it:
(don't forget to copy and paste REGEDIT4)

Quote

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
"xmacuje"=-
"qluqonora"=-
Save this as fix.reg Choose to save as *all files and place it on your desktop.
It should look like this: Posted Image
Doubleclick on it and when it asks you if you want to merge the contents to the registry, click yes/ok.

Then let me know how things are now :D

This should fix the errors you got, because it are those two values that were causing it, especially since the related files are deleted now :P

The fix.reg seems to have done the trick. I rebooted and didn't get the errors. I am rescanning with Malwarebytes now, and will re-install McAfee when it is done. Thanks for all the help, hopefully the Malwarbytes scan will only have the two meaningless items.

Ok let me know. Everything should be Ok now though. It was just a matter of permissions to delete the files here :)

Glad I could help. :D

Please read my Prevention page with lots of info and tips how to prevent this in the future.
And if you want to improve speed/system performance after malware removal, take a look here.
Extra note: Make sure your programs are up to date - because older versions may contain Security Leaks. To find out what programs need to be updated, please run the Secunia Software Inspector Scan.

Happy Surfing again!
