Question about SSL encryption (128 bit)

I would appreciate it very much if someone could explain, in comprehensible language please, what the function/purpose of SSL encryption (128 bit) exactly is (I know it has something to do with keeping personal details secure). When visiting a website yesterday to order some products (and which website I use regularly for this reason), Firefox 3.0.9 crashed when I clicked the link for entering my personal details, while I could use IE 8 without problems to complete my order. It's the first time I encoutered this problem with the website in question using Firefox.

so we are now using TLC after SSL.
I assume firefox has a good support on this one.

what I've noticed with firefox is its slow start. :angry:

Maybe you have too many plugins or add-ons. The more you add to it the slower it will be to launch
