Not sure how the infection was acquired. First noticed connection problems. The internet would connect but have little connectivity. Sporadically, the internet would have great connection for a few minutes. We called a tech support person, and he said AVG caused connection problems and recommended we uninstall it. When that didn't help, we called another person, and he had us test our phone line filters. After removing the one from our Dish DVR, the net worked properly. However, soon, the internet wouldn't even make a connection. To be sure it wasn't hardware problems, I hooked the laptop up to the cable, and the net works fine. Other problems I noticed on the desktop - security programs, e.g. MBAM, Super Anti-Spyware, Spybot would not run; system start up processes were slow to start and not all start up programs displayed in system tray; and system restore was restricted (Click on the Next button to begin process did nothing). I've run all sorts of scans at least a couple times each:

Dr. CureIT: found a few infections first time, and one on second - C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Spybot - Search & Destroy\Snapshots2\RegUBP2b-Owner.reg infected with Trojan.StartPage.1505
Microsoft Malicious Tool Removal - found nothing
AVG - was able to install free version of Pro; found several instances of Win32/Cryptor, but didn't get rid of all of them; however, three scans since have found nothing.
Avast - ran during boot menu, found one infection; then ran in safe mode (with AVG disabled), and it found nothing.
Super Anti-Spyware - latest scan found Rogue.Component/Trace in 5 locations in the HKLM\Software\Microsoft\34952D4D directory
MBAM - was able to reinstall by renaming it; attached log; a followup scan found nothing though
ClamWin Portalbe - found some infection, C:\WINDOWS\system32\updater\explorer.exe: Trojan.Qhost-165 FOUND along with 3 others found in Firefox Profile data. I will post log if requested.

I have noticed that security programs run now. Start up is sometimes slow, sometimes pretty normal, but not all icons appear in system tray. System Restore still does not work. I have turned System Restore off, and haven't turned it back on yet. And internet does not connect. I plug the cable in, and it doesn't even attempt a connection. Windows Update should be automatic, but I hadn't checked manually since at least two weeks before the infection. It does have a notification to install update for Office XP SP3. Have never been able to install it, because I don't have the CD. I am currently running another Super Anti-Spyware Scan. Found a registry infection called Adware.SystemProcess. I'll update this post when it's finished scanning. This problem first started on April 20th. Here's my latest HJT log. Thank you for your assistance.

Hi. Sorry if I sound impatient. It's just that I posted to two other forums a week ago and haven't gotten a response from them yet. I just wanted give a little extra info. I tried creating a new restore point, and got a message saying I couldn't and to restart my PC and try again. Did that, and still couldn't. As far as Internet connection, I've updated my Intel Pro/100 VE adapter. Ran Connection Diagnostics, and it said to run the test, the connection must be configured to use TCP/IP protocol. But it appears that TCP/IP is configured when I check the connection properties. It's set to obtain IP address automatically and DNS server address automatically. So apparently it does connect, but cannot communicate. Perhaps I will post this issue in another topic. It's just that I wouldn't think the net problems are related to malware, if it wasn't for the system restore issue and the slow start up. I installed Tuneup Utilities on the laptop, which brought my attention to SYN attacks. Do you think this or some other type of hijacking would cause this problem? Thank you, again.
