I'm unable to remove infected registry keys and values that Malwarebytes has detected. HELP.....PLEASE.

Malwarebytes originally found Trojan.BHO, Trojan.Agent and Rootkit.Agent. I have attached the original log file for this. Original.txt. Asked Malwarebytes to remove the items and it reported that it required a reboot to remove the items but after the reboot they were still there. Tried a couple of times but no good. Tried to manually remove the 2 files and 6 registry items found but they were locked/protected. Couldn't adjust permissions on any of the infected items to delete them either. Did some searching and found GMER.exe and that was able to remove the locked files but didn't seem to have any way to remove the registry items. I have tried deleting these in safe mode and using another program Unlocker.exe, but still no good.

I have attached current Malwarebytes and HijackThis logs. Malwarebytes is no longer detecting the 2 registry keys with Trojan.BHO but they are still in the registry, so maybe they are no longer a threat???

I'm assuming the Trojans are still on the system until I can totally remove these registry items, but just can't get rid of them.

The computer has had AVG previously for antivirus and more recently was using ESET Smart Security (ESS). Right now neither are installed as ESS was interfering with the running of GMER.exe. Just mentioned this as you were probably going to signs of these in the logs.

Thanks in advance.

Hi,

First of all, please update MalwareBytes, because the databaseversion is outdated.

  • Start MalwareBytes and click the Update tab. There click "Check for updates"
  • In case you can't update the database via the update option, please download and install the database from here. Only do this when the update option doesn't work.
  • Once the updates are downloaded, perform a full scan again.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log, then we'll proceed from there with new steps.
Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediatly.

Also, please don't attach your logs.

Hi,

After leaving my first post I ran ComboFix, then updated Malwarebytes and ran a full scan again. This time Malwarebytes was able to detect some more items (another rootkit) that it previously hadn't. It was able to remove these new items and the previous ones as well. Please see log below.

I have updated Malwarebytes again this morning and ran a full scan. Also ran a scan with HijackThis. Both of these logs are below. Also reinstalled ESET Smart Security and ran a full scan. All have reported a clean system.

At this stage it looks like the system is clean of all items, but I would appreciate your comments on the logs (particularly HijackThis) to confirm all is ok.

Thanks again.

Hi,

The reason why mbam detected this one now is because you had to update.

Check and fix next leftover in HijackThis:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {A544FAE2-9156-4005-95FC-ECEEB96A3DB9} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\avwa.dll (file missing)

* Go to start > run and copy and paste next command in the field:

ComboFix /u

Make sure there's a space between Combofix and /
Then hit enter.

This will uninstall Combofix, delete its related folders and files, reset your clock settings, hide file extensions, hide the system/hidden files and resets System Restore again.

Let me know in your next reply how things are now.

Hi,

Did as you as you suggested and everything looks good.

As you say updating Malwarebytes allowed it to find those other items. Defs were only a couple of days old but it obviously made a difference. I didn't realise how often they were updated.

Thanks again for all your help.
You guys and the Malwarebytes program ROCK!!!!

Hi,

mbam gets updated a couple of times each day (at least 5 times)

Glad I could help. :)

Please read my Prevention page with lots of info and tips how to prevent this in the future.
And if you want to improve speed/system performance after malware removal, take a look here.
Extra note: Make sure your programs are up to date - because older versions may contain Security Leaks. To find out what programs need to be updated, please run the Secunia Software Inspector Scan.

Happy Surfing again!
