I have XP desktop and I can't remove hiberfil.sys. The usual method is to click on the hibernate tab in power options, but there is no tab. I downloaded fileASSASSIN and tried that and ir could not delete the file. I need to copy the C: drive and hiberfil.sys prevents the copy process.

It appears the problem is that some of your power settings are missing, so I would attack that issue first, then once it's restored, uncheck the box and reboot, this will allow you to remove the file normally. To help, take a look at this MS knowlegebase article. You also might try line 204 on the right side at Kellys Corner. It also could be as simple as a reboot because I also discovered that if an update for Windows was installed that requires reboot, the Hibernation tab is temporarily disabled until the reboot takes place.

Hi.
It is in the C:\ drive right? ok. So go to the file, right click, and select unlocker. Then when it says "no action" in the small box change it to delete and press ok. Then you will get a pop up saying that it got deleted.

Greetings victimized :(

I could be mistaken here, but I don't believe Unlocker will be able to remove Hyberfil.sys for much the same reason it can't remove the paging file: Windows sees it as locked and in use no matter what unless the option is deactivated in Windows and the system is rebooted.

Hello exile. Another way I think you can delete it is from disk cleanup.

I don't think disk cleanup gets rid of it unless hybernation has already been turned off though.

If there is no TAB then one of a couple things could be at play.

1. Malware
2. A policy to remove the TAB has been set and would need to be removed
3. An update or installation for Power Management may need to be re-installed from the MFG
4. Using the UNLOCKER program should be able to remove this file initially, but if it comes back then one of the issues above would need to be further investigated.
