Hi:

I have run into a problem where I cannot run an update on Malwarebytes (claims no internet connection but I can get on the internet with no issues with IE) and whenever I try to start up regedit, all the icons on my desktop and the task bar all disappear and them come back after a few seconds but regedit will not open. I have tried changing the name of regedit.exe to regedit.com with no success and I cannot run regedit32 either. My wife, who also uses the computer also compained of Firefox aborting with some error frequently. I suspect a virus of some type. I have a HJT log but I cannot seem to upload it here. Says I am not permitted to upload this type of file. Can some one help please?

Hello Folks!

I am having the EXACT same issue! I cannot update my Malwarebytes (I get the exact error message) and I cannot update my McAfee's. I also tried to access the regedit via the "run" but my screen does exactly what you described above.

This is totally an annoying!!!

Ok, I found the problem and resolved it (I believe)

I found a registry entry in driver32 that was causing the issue. I noticed my audio systemtray icon would not open and looked at the entries for audio as follows.

With this removed, regedit works, Malwarebytes update works and all seems ok with the world

I posted a similar message on McAfee's forum and I downloaded another program - here are the details that I followed:


To help find out what is starting up with your computer, please download and run the following tool.
AutoRuns 9.5.0 - from sysinternals.com.


When it loads, Press ESC to cancel the initial scan. Then go to the OPTIONS menu and select "Verify Code Signatures" AND "Hide Microsoft and Windows Entries".

Choose the FILE menu - > Refresh.

This will scan your computer's startup locations and list them. It is done when the lower left status bar says "Ready."

Go to the CODECS tab. The section you need to look at are:

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Drivers32

UNCHECK any items that is similar to the following:

Autorun Entry: Aux#
Image Path: C:\\Windows\\System32\\..\\[random.file.name]

Restart your computer.

This worked for me as I was able to update my McAfee's and Malwarebytes with no problem!!! I hope that you get things resolved.
