Last night my WinXP PC started acting erratically – a lot of sudden IE pop-ups. I noticed a few processes running that had names consisting of large 10 digit numbers (e.g., 3211050312.exe). I couldn’t execute Mbam, nor could I use System Restore to go back to a safe point. Clicking on Mbam or System Restore just popped up the hourglass briefly, then nothing.

I tried the suggestions posted here to start Mbam, but didn’t see the tsc.exe or the av360.exe processes in the Process Explorer. I also tried the RootRepeal tool, but when it started, it said it couldn’t find kernel file on disk (C:\WINDOWS\system32\ntoskrnl.exe)! It didn’t find any files ending in “*.sys” and the only files and directories that were listed said “Could not get file information”.

I finally got Mbam to run by renaming the file and running in Safe Mode. This found a lot of problems. Trojan.Zlob.H, Backdoor.Bot, Trojan.Vundo, Trojan.Zlob and HijackFolderOptions. Mbam said it fixed everything and I booted in regular mode and it seemed much better. No 10-digit processes. But then some pop-ups came back, including one for the System Security Scanner which I’m sure is a fake and I still couldn’t execute Mbam or HiJackThis. The pop-ups just kept coming and coming!

I went back to safe mode and could execute Mbam again (with the rename), but this time it found nothing wrong. Everything was OK from its perspective. When I rebooted in regular mode I got as far as the desktop and the system froze. The mouse would move, but turned to an hourglass when I hovered over the taskbar. Otherwise nothing. Ctrl-Atl-Del did nothing. I power cycled and rebooted again in regular mode. This time it froze on the login screen. I couldn’t select my user login. However, later, I tried logging in as my wife and that worked. Perhaps there is a problem with one of the files associated with my login name which is “Ray”(?). It seemed stable for a while (kind of like after the initial Malwarebytes repair), then suddenly there was an IE window pop-up:

Posted Image

I didn’t click on it - I assume this is a virus

Finally I brought it into safe mode and that’s where it sits. I’m kinda stuck. Attached are

1. Most recent HijackThis output – in Safe mode
2. Most recent Malwarebytes log (Clean, also in Safe Mode)
3. For Reference, the Malwarebyte log when it found so many problems (again in Safe Mode)

Any pointers would be greatly appreciated!

Ray Smith

YOUR VERSION
Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware 1.30
Database version: 1306

CURRENT VERSION
Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware 1.37
Database version: 2195

I would recommend uninstalling your current version and restarting the computer and installing the new version: MBAM download
Then make sure you update the definition files and do a Quick Scan and post back that log.

OK –some progress! I upgraded to Version 1.37, (I had to change the names of the files to get them to execute – but that worked) but I could not do the database update. I booted up in Safe Mode with Networking, but I couldn’t access the internet from there to do the database update. Browsers wouldn’t work either – although I was able to ping yahoo.com from a command prompt – so I’m not sure what’s going on there.

First, I ran MBAM from my wife’s login (JoAnn) and it found 36 problems, so that’s good. I noticed that some of the files were specific to her login so I decided to run it again from my own login (Ray), and it found 5 more.

So then I ran it yet again, first from the Ray login and again from the JoAnn login. Both had the same results: It found two problems one of which was the file C:\WINDOWS/system32/uacinit.dll which, according to the log, was supposed to be deleted on reboot. FWIW, I haven’t seen this file under Windows Explorer either before or after running MBAM.

I have left it running in SafeMode with Networking. I have not yet tried to boot into regular mode.

The following logs are attached:
1. The most recent MBAM log showing the two problems.
2. The previous MBAM log under the Ray login which shows 5 problems
3. The even earlier MBAM log under the JoAnn login which shows 36 problems
4. The most recent HiJackThis log which I ran after the last MBAM run. (I know you didn’t ask for it – but thought I’d include it)
Please visit this webpage for instructions for downloading ComboFix to your DESKTOP : how-to-use-combofix
Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.
NOTE!!: You must save and run ComboFix.exe on your DESKTOP and not from any other folder.
Also, DO NOT click the mouse or launch any other applications while this is running or it may stall the program

Additional links to download the tool:
ComboFix.exe
ComboFix.exe
ComboFix.exe

Note: The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:

The Recovery Console was successfully installed.

Please continue as follows:
  • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
  • Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.
  • When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • Please post the C:\ComboFix.txt along with a new HijackThis log so we may continue cleaning the system.

I've read the instructions and they seem straightforward. I have two quick questions:

1. Is it OK to run from Safe Mode with Networking - or should I go into regular mode? (I haven't tried regular mode that since I ran Malwarebytes under safe mode earlier tonight).

2. I had trouble last night running the System Restore last night - it wouldn't execute. Maybe enough has been cleaned up to fix that - but I won't know until I try. If it fails should I just go on?

Best to start from Normal Mode and use Safe Mode only if it won't run in Normal mode.

Hey - things are looking MUCH better now! It took a few iterations to get it running (name changes and a few restarts), but ComboFix found a lot of problems.

Here is the comboFix log and HiJackThis (I can actually run it under its own name in normal mode!)

Please let me know if you think there is more to do.

Even when ComboFix appears to be doing nothing, look at your Drive light. If it is flashing, Combofix is still at work.

I ran combofix and it found some more problems. It said it was getting ready to reboot and to let Combofix do that - but now it's hung!

I have had a blank desktop and an hourglass - for several hours now. It must have been close to rebooting when it hung, as the printer made its little noise as usually does just before rebooting - but with all the warnings about not disturbing ComboFix, I'm not sure what to do now.

I assume all I can do is hit the power button?

Well, I powered my PC down and then up again and it rebooted fine, got to the desktop and then Combo-Fix took over and eventually displayed its log file – so I will assume all went well. Thanks for getting back to me on that. I’m glad I waited.

I then ran HijackThis to fix the two IE R1- proxy problems. Then ran Malwarebytes, updated to the latest database and generated a HijackThis log. I then ran DDS. It didn't ask me for any optional scan, but it generated both log files – so I assume this is everything I needed.

Please let me know what I should do next. I really appreciate all your time on this.

Ray Smith

Looks pretty good now.

Please go into the Control Panel, Add/Remove and for now remove ALL versions of JAVA
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 10
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6

Then run this tool to help cleanup any left over Java
Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.
Please download JavaRa and unzip it to your desktop.
***Please close any instances of Internet Explorer (or other web browser) before continuing!***
  • Double-click on JavaRa.exe to start the program.
  • From the drop-down menu, choose English and click on Select.
  • JavaRa will open; click on Remove Older Versions to remove the older versions of Java installed on your computer.
  • Click Yes when prompted. When JavaRa is done, a notice will appear that a logfile has been produced. Click OK.
  • A logfile will pop up. Please save it to a convenient location and post it back when you reply

Then look for the following Java folders and if found delete them.
    C:\Program Files\Java
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\Java
    C:\Windows\Sun
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Java
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Sun\Java
    C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Java
    C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Sun\Java

Please run the following to remove any tools that might have been used during the scaning and cleaning of your system.

STEP A
Uninstall ComboFix.exe
  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u (if you renamed Combofix.exe use that name instead) in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the /U, it needs to be there.
  •
Posted Image
• When shown the disclaimer, Select "2"
Remove this folder C:\QooBox if the uninstall instructions don't work and delete Combofix.exe AND check your system time and reset if needed
STEP B
Uninstall GMER
Click on START - RUN and type in or copy/paste %windir%\gmer_uninstall.cmd to remove GMER.
STEP C
Uninstall other tools
Please Download OTMoveIt3 by Old Timer and save it to your Desktop.
  • Double-click OTMoveIt3.exe to run it.
  • While connected to the Internet, Click on the green CleanUp! button and it will populate a list of items to clean from your system that we used or may have used.
  • It should ask if you want to clean up, select Yes and allow the system to clean up these items.
NOW please reboot your computer to finish the cleanup process
Download and install CCleaner
  • CCleaner
  • Double-click on the downloaded file "ccsetup219.exe" and install the application.
  • Keep the default installation folder "C:\Program Files\CCleaner"
  • Uncheck "Add CCleaner Yahoo! Toolbar and use CCleaner from your browser"
  • Click finish when done and close ALL PROGRAMS
  • Start the CCleaner program.
  • Click on Registry and Uncheck Registry Integrity so that it does not run (basically the very top, uncheck it)
  • Click on Options - Advanced and Uncheck "Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours"
  • Click back to Cleaner and under SYSTEM uncheck the Memory Dumps and Windows Log Files
  • Click on Run Cleaner button on the bottom right side of the program.
  • Click OK to any prompts

Download and Update Java Runtime
The most current version of Sun Java is: Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 14.
  • Go to http://java.sun.com/...loads/index.jsp
  • Go to Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 14 about half way down the page and click on the Download button.
  • In Platform box choose Windows.
  • Check the box to Accept License Agreement and click Continue.
  • Click on Windows Offline Installation, click on the link under it which says jre-6u14-windows-i586.exe and save the downloaded file to your desktop.
  • Install the new version by running the newly-downloaded file with the java icon which will be on your desktop, and follow the on-screen instructions.
  • Uncheck the Toolbar button (unless you want the toolbar)
  • Reboot your computer

Then let's double-check all is okay by doing an Online Anti-Virus scan.
This will take a long time so grab something to eat and sit back and watch a show or something while it runs as it will take a while to run.

Run Kaspersky Online AV Scanner

Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.
  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
      Archives
      Mail databases
  • Click on My Computer under Scan and then put the kettle on!
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
  • Save this report to a convenient place like your Desktop. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  • Copy and paste the report into your next reply along with a fresh HJT log and a description of how your PC is behaving.

Removed the old Java versions; Ran the JavaRa tool;
Uninstalled ComboFix
GMER wasn’t found so there was no uninstall for that.
Downloaded OTMoveIt3 and ran it
Downloaded CCleaner – it found a lot of stuff – cleaned that up.
Downloaded and installed new Java

Ran Kaspersky Online AV scanner –it found a few things. I was going to uninstall Norton System Works (which includes the Norton Anti Virus) and install Kaspersky Internet Security 2009 – unless you think I should do something differently.

The system seems to be running very well. Seems very responsive!

Please let me know if you think there is anything else I should do!

Please update MBAM and do another Quick Scan now and post back that log.

These files should be detected and removed. If MBAM does not detect them then please zip them up and attach them so that we can see why they're not being detected.

c:\windows\system32\dpcxool64.sys
c:\windows\system32\sopidkc.exe
c:\windows\system32\tpsaxyd.exe

Update and Scan with Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Start MalwareBytes AntiMalware (Vista users must Right click and choose RunAs Admin)
  • Please DO NOT run MBAM in Safe Mode unless requested to, you MUST run it in normal Windows mode.
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Select the Update tab
    • Click Update
  • When the update is complete, select the Scanner tab
  • Select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. please copy and paste the log into your next reply
    • If you accidently close it, the log file is saved here and will be named like this:
    • C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt
Then post back the MBAM log and a new Hijackthis log.

Strange – I updated MBAM and it came up clean.

I looked for those files - but didn't find them in Windows Explorer under c:\WINDOWS\system32. So I did a search via the Windows Explorer and found those three files, plus a fourth one called comsa32.sys in a directory called:
C:\Program Files\%windir%\system32

The string, “%windir%” was the literal name of the directory under c:\Program Files!

Here is the output from the dir command in the command prompt:

Directory of C:\Program Files\%windir%\system32

06/01/2009 08:27 PM <DIR> .
06/01/2009 08:27 PM <DIR> ..
04/15/2009 06:57 PM 8 comsa32.sys
05/27/2009 07:14 AM 36,864 dpcxool64.sys
05/29/2009 12:30 PM 124,416 sopidkc.exe
05/29/2009 12:30 PM 158,720 tpsaxyd.exe

I zipped them up and attached them to this post. Maybe these are not the correct files - but I thought I'd attach them anyway.

Please let me know what else you think I should do.

Yes, those are the correct files. Let me get back to you as soon as I get word back from one of the developers on these files.

Thanks.

I did some checking and we can work with this type of naming flawlessly .

I have talked to a few other experts on this and they believe that this folder name is the result of a failed install .

In any event we will not allow this folder name as of the next update .

I assume that the installation of the virus is what failed? Odd that Kaspersky listed three of the four files as belonging to /windows/system32, while windows explorer and MBAM did not.
I haven't tried to remove anything so far. Should I sit tight with this for now until a new update is available? I can try something out if you want me to.

Please update and scan again as shown below. Then browse to C:\Program Files and see if that folder and those files have been removed. MBAM should now detect and remove them with this new update.

Ran MBAM and the directory, and files are all deleted, including the zip file I created to package up and send to you. Glad to find something you can add to the database! Anything else I should do? Another Kaspersky run?
