I keep hearing that this is serious stuff and so sophisticated that it often goes undetected. I haven't seen much in the way of advice about how to avoid it. Can Malwarebytes detect this infection or will that be for an antivirus program to do? I use Kaspersky AV 2009. Thanks in advance for any info!

Trojan.Gumblar is also named Trojan.JSRedir, which we detect. Please see the below links.
