I really want to install and run MBAM but get runtime errors every time. I've tried renaming but to no avail. I'm having performance issues/crashes and c:/programfiles/common/helper.sig appears in a window after every reboot. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have a HJT log I can post if it helps. Thanks!

Hi,

First please take a look and see if any of these posts help you to get MBAM running or not.

Potential Malware infection issues to review to get MBAM running
If none of above apply in your case, then try if Malwarebytes works when you rename mbam.exe. This is the file located in the Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware folder. So rename mbam.exe to blah.exe (or so).
Also try to run Mbam from Windows Safe mode.

Hi, thanks so much for replying.
I followed all your suggestions and found nothing really. There were no .sys files or those with the prefixes you listed.

Initially I got this message with RootRepeal:

RootRepeal Error
Attempt to read from address: 0x00b7f004

The second time I installed it, it ran and got this log:

I've tried renaming mbam (setup file & .exe) and had no luck. I also tried running it in safe mode and still get runtime errors both during the install and running it. I have seen that others have had this problem but your fixes have worked for them. I've been working on this for a week and still can't get rid of the problem. I really hope you can help!

AAh, you are getting runtime errors?
It would be great if you posted what Runtime errors you get.

Also, * Please visit this webpage for instructions for downloading and running ComboFix:

http://www.bleepingc...to-use-combofix

Post the log from ComboFix in your next reply.

Please make sure you disable ALL of your Antivirus/Antispyware/Firewall before running ComboFix..This because Security Software may see some components ComboFix uses (prep.com for example) as suspicious and blocks the tool, or even deletes it. Please visit HERE if you don't know how.

The runtime error I get with MBAM is 440.

I ran ComboFix and initially got these messages:

16 bit MS-DOS Subsystem
C:\WINDOWS\system32\cmd.execf
The NTVDM CPU has encountered an illegal instruction.
CS:0000 IP:0077 OP:f0 37 05 0a 02
Choose 'Close' to terminate the application.

16 bit MS-DOS Subsystem
C:\WINDOWS\system32\CF16717.exe
The NTVDM CPU has encountered an illegal instruction.
CS:0000 IP:0077 OP:f0 37 05 0a 02
Choose 'Close' to terminate the application.

C:\ComboFix\Attrib.cfexe
is not a valid Win32 application

I let ComboFix continue and in the program window I saw 'Access Denied' 3 times before it continued then
C:\ComboFix\Attrib.cfexe
is not a valid Win32 application
appeared several times while the program was running and I had to click OK twice before it could continue.

Finally it finished and I received the log file (see attached).

Hi,

Combofix already removed the malware.
I'm wondering if the errors are caused my McAfee - it wouldn't be the first time, so do me a favour and temporary uninstall McAfee. Then reboot.
After reboot, post a HijackThislog in your next reply. That's the only way to properly troubleshoot (remove potential causes)

With McAfee uninstalled, I still get the c:\programfiles\common window appearing after reboot. It no longer shows helper.sig, but still appears.

Should I try to run MBAM again now after running ComboFix, and with McAfee uninstalled?

Should I try to run MBAM again now after running ComboFix, and with McAfee uninstalled?
Before you do, please navigate to and delete the following folder:

c:\program files\Common

Don't delete the Common Files folder!!!!

Then run Malwarebytes again.

I deleted the folder as requested.

Even with McAfee uninstalled, I'm still getting runtime errors when I try to install MBAM:

vbAccelerator SGrid II Control
Run-time error '0'
OK

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
Run-time error '440'
Automation error
OK

This appears to occur during installation when it opens a cmd window and displays "c:\WINDOWS\system32\regsvr32.exe"

Hi,

I read the thread as requested and did the following:

- Installed VB runtime (although I'm not convinced the self-extract worked - how can I tell? The files are not in the same directory as the downloaded file).
- Manually made the 'regsvr32' entries
- Used the MBAM cleanup utility
- Reinstalled MBAM again
- Tried renaming mbam.exe

Nothing worked - I still get the same runtime errors - very frustrating.

I viewed the registry and found plenty I didn't understand but a couple of things that looked weird.
For example, under control panel, there was an entry called "don't load" - do you know what that is?

Also, now upon reboot, I get the error:
"Windows cannot find the file C:\Program"

Don't worry about that. It's supposed to be there.

Also, if I run CCleaner on Registry, is it safe to fix all problems?

Hi,

Please download Brute Force Uninstaller .
  • Right click the downloaded BFU folder, and choose Extract All
  • Click "Next"
  • In the box to choose where to extract the files to,
  • Click "Browse"
  • Click on the + sign next to "My Computer"
  • Click on "Local Disk (C:) or whatever your primary drive is
  • Click "Make New Folder"
  • Type in BFU
  • Click "Next", and Uncheck the "Show Extracted Files" box and then click "Finish".
RIGHT-CLICK HERE and choose "Save As" (in IE it's "Save Target As") in order to download DeepDive Remover.
Save it in the same folder you made earlier (c:\BFU).

Then, please go to Start > My Computer and navigate to the C:\BFU folder.
  • Start the Brute Force Uninstaller by doubleclicking BFU.exe
  • Behind the scriptline to execute field click the folder icon Posted Image and select DeepDive.bfu
  • Press Execute and let the program do it’s job. (Do not be startled as your taskbar will disappear for a little while.)
  • Wait for the complete script execution box to pop up and press OK.
  • Press exit to terminate the BFU program.
  • A notepad file called BFUlogdeepdive.txt should be open. Post the content of that file please.

I actually don't recommend Registry cleaning in general, but I know Ccleaner is quite safe to use for regcleaning. It isn't that aggressive as others are and asks to create a backup first as well.

BFU ran without any problems except that I may have messed up the log - sorry. I didn't see the log at first and so ran the program again which probably screwed up the report. I'm sure it ran fine. Let me know what you think - thanks!

Hi,

Do you still get the "Windows cannot find the file C:\Program" error after reboot now?
The Runtime error issues you're having with mbam is uncommon and doesn't appear to be a malware related issue though.
That's why I suggest you start a new thread here: http://www.malwareby...hp?showforum=41 with the exact error you are getting.
