Unable to install Malwarebytes...hijack this log won't upload

I've been using Malwarebytes for a few years now, without problems. Just recently an error box
popped up, saying 'this application failed to start because MSVBVM60.dll was not found'.
I have this file in my windows system32 folder...I also copied it to my system folder, and to
my malwarebytes folder on my 'C' drive. I also downloaded a more recent version of this file..
my original was dated 2004, and this new one is 2009. I also un-installed my old version
of malwarebytes, and installed the new 1.38...and I'm still getting the same error msg.
Anyone know why my PC can't find this file? blink.gif

The last post said to download/run malwarebytes 1.38, which I've done, except it still can't find MSVBVM60.dll,
even though it's in my windows/system folder. I downloaded and ran the hijack this program, however, I'm getting the error msg:'upload failed, you are
not permitted to upload this type of file'. Can I copy and paste it here, within the post?

Whoa, this looks scary complex. OK, I've downloaded ComboFix to my desktop, but am sort of confused...is the Windows Recovery Console the same as the Vista Windows Recovery Environment? The prior post says to 'install the Recovery Console first', but if these two are the same, then there's nothing to install. So, when I have the Vista Windows Recovery Environment CMD prompt up, what do I do...the 'How to use the Command Prompt in the Vista Windows Recovery Environment' just tells me how to use it, not what to do once it's up. Do I run ComboFix and let it download the
Windows Recovery Console as the 'A guide and tutorial on using ComboFix' indicates, or is ComboFix smart enough to see that it's running on a Vista box, and skip this step?

Combofix should detect and do the right thing. Just run it and let it go through its routines. It will probably reboot when almost done and after the reboot it will come back up and finish up and create the log file we need you to post back.

Sorry for the delay...been out-of-town bringing up a data center that had gone down due to lightning strike hits. OK, I've read all the various 'how-to's' links and was almost ready to do this, but I wanted to make sure that I was able to re-connect back to the internet after I'm all done. I'm not understanding this..."Click on the Start button.

When I do ...When the Control Panel opens, double-click on the Network Connections icon. If your Control Panel is set to Category View, then double-click on Network and Internet Connections and then click on Network Connections at the bottom....there is no ' Network Connections at the bottom'. I've spent about an hour poking around/searching and still can't find anything like the picture
at the bottom of 'A guide and tutorial on using ComboFix'. I'm using Vista...could this be called something else?

Sheeessshhh, this is pretty bad...30 years experience with mainframes, and this stumps me???!!!???? Thanks for putting up with me so far....almost the end....

LOL - No problem. Yes, Vista is a LOT different and they don't have a guide for Vista as it's not "Officially" supported but it runs just fine on Vista in every case I've seen.

I also notice this has Peer2Peer sharing software on it that you should remove as this is one of the main reasons systems get infected, at least fully disable it while we're assisting you.

I would go ahead and just go into the Services and set your Anti-Virus to Disabled then shut it down if you can, if it won't then reboot and while it's set to disabled it should stay disabled. Then download and run Combofix. I'm assuming since you're in the business that your data is backed up and you have a Vista installation CD if something does break, or you have access to other systems and tools to assist in repair if needed.


If you want you can also take a look at these posts (written for XP, but also applies to Vista but views, settings will be a bit different) and see if that can stop the main infection so we can run other tools properly.

Thanks for the additional info. While I haven't yet disabled my Trend, spybot, P2P, etc...I have have all those notes in old school long hand just in case I'm unable to re-connect to the 'net. The only thing that I need now is how to re-connect back to the internet after I'm all done. In one of the how-to's it says:

I still can't find 'click on Network Connections at the bottom.'

I would like to have this info before I start, as I won't be able to post my hijack this and combofix logs here if I can't reconnect.

Vista does not operate in the same fashion. How you access the network is different.
I would have to review the post and see if I can give you instructions based on Vista but that probably won't happen for at least a day or two.

You can not easily recover files that were deleted from the Recycle Bin without file recovery software. It was emptied because that is often where Malware hides to re-infect you. The Recycle Bin is trash not a storage folder. If you really want or think you may want files you should not put them in the Trash, you should create a folder for them and place them there.


Temporarily disable your current Anti-Virus and then download MBAM v1.39 and try to re-install MBAM now and run a Quick Scan.

Update and Scan with Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Start MalwareBytes AntiMalware (Vista users must Right click and choose RunAs Admin)
  • Please DO NOT run MBAM in Safe Mode unless requested to, you MUST run it in normal Windows mode.
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Select the Update tab
    • Click Update
  • When the update is complete, select the Scanner tab
  • Select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. please copy and paste the log into your next reply
    • If you accidently close it, the log file is saved here and will be named like this:
    • C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt
Then post back the MBAM log and a new Hijackthis log.


Don't worry about Tea Timer, it's pretty much useless against most current Malware. Leave it off until we're done.

OK, downloaded 1.39, disabled and exited Trend, ran the 1.39 as admin, and it installed almost to the end, but then gave up the ghost with 'Error Code 732(0,0)'. Do you know what this means?

Error 732: Error updating the database or product. Check Internet connectivity.

I would guess that something was still blocking MBAM from going out and getting an update.
Do the install but DON'T check for updates. Uncheck that part and see if it runs and do a scan with the old defs for now.

Uninstalled the old Malwarebytes, disabled Trend, and installed 1.39 with 'check for updates' unchecked. Ran a quick scan..and it came back with 'no malicious items were found'.

Oh, BTW, last week, before I took down spybot, I was able to connect, download a new version, update it and run a scan. As you recall from a prior post, at one time I wasn't able to update
spybot...and I thought that whatever issue I have was related to not only Malwarebytes, but also spybot....but that doesn't seem to be the case.

Well since you've gotten Combofix to run. Please delete the current copy you have on the desktop what ever name it is and download a NEW fresh copy and run that and post back it's log please.

It could just be a new module that Trend supposedly has put in place in the past couple of days. I still need to download the new version and see what's going on and if I can update the FAQ workaround for it if needed.
