Hi,
My mouse has started acting strange. As I move it around it jerks and shoots into the wrong direction. I have tried 2 different mouses (mice?) and 2 mouse pads to no avail, so I can only assume its a software glitch. Can anyone help me?

Thanks in advance.

Hello  .

A few questions:
  • What type of mouse is it (manufacturer and model #)?
  • Is it wired or wireless?
  • Is it connected via USB or PS2?
  • Do you have any third party mouse software or drivers installed such as Logitech or Microsoft?
  • Are the mice you've tried ball mice or optical/laser?
  • Have you noticed any other strange behavior from your PC?
  • Does the mouse pointer ever move on its own when not being touched or just the jerkyness when you are using it?
  • Does it ever act as though you'd clicked one of the mouse buttons when you hadn't?

1. What type of mouse is it (manufacturer and model #)?
I tried both a Microsoft Wireless Optical mouse 2.1 and a Microsoft Notebook optical mouse model 1020

2. Is it wired or wireless?
One was wireless, the other was a USB cable mouse.

3. Is it connected via USB or PS2?
Both are connected via USB, I tried them in different slots.

4. Do you have any third party mouse software or drivers installed such as Logitech or Microsoft?
I use 'Microsoft' branded mice so I assume I have some microsoft drivers installed, although I've never put in a disk for them or anything.

5. Are the mice you've tried ball mice or optical/laser?
Both are optical/laser

6. Have you noticed any other strange behavior from your PC?
Nope, I'm obsessive compulsive about PC security.

7. Does the mouse pointer ever move on its own when not being touched or just the jerkyness when you are using it?

Just jerky when I use it.

8. Does it ever act as though you'd clicked one of the mouse buttons when you hadn't?

No.

QuickUpdate:
I've noticed that It is much, much jerkier when I am dragging objects, such as desktop shortcuts.

Ok. I've seen similar behaviors before from optical mice. When you drag an object you usually (unconciously) move the mouse a bit slower, thus causing more jerkiness. I suspect the mouse pad is at fault and is obscuring and reflecting/redirecting the light somewhat. I realize you tried 2 different pads, but if they both have shiny surfaces it's still a possibility. What happens when you use no mouse pad? Does it still occur?

Sadly yes, my desk is really shiny so It doesn't work on that, so I put it on a pad of paper which has 0 reflectivity and the jerkiness still occurred.

Perhaps they (the mice) need to be cleaned. I'd imagine dust and dirt buildup could cause such problems as well.

Couple methods to try if needed:

Install fresh batteries for Wireless Mouse
Reset mouse frequencies via the RF Receiver (this is connected to USB port) by pressing the small button and then pressing the button on the mouse and/or the keyboard.

Using a USB to PS2 adapter connecting to the ps2 mouse port. (optical/laser)

Disconnect/Reconnect optical/laser mouse and restart computer

Use a brown paper bag for a pad

Run a MBAM Quick scan

This is the pad I use for both of my optical/laser mices on the black surface (clear surface not good)

If I may ask, is this a laptop with one of those cursor stick pointing devices in the keyboard? What is the make and model as well please?

I've taken my mouse apart and hit it with the air compressor  It seems to work fine now, something must have been caught it. (Dust, most probably)

That's the conclusion I came to as well. I'm glad you got it working :P . I had the same thing happen to my Logitech Laser mouse once (it cost me around $70 at the time) and I thought it was broken at first. I was mad, but a good cleaning fixed it right up  .
