I am running Windows XP Home Edition Version 2002 SP2. It seems as though I caught Braviax virus. I was not able to run any exe files. after hooking up the drive on another computer I think I got rid of the virus but I cannot access some exe files like Internet Explorer and Ad-aware. I get the following error:
windows cannot access the specified device path or file

Thanks for your help.
None of these has solved the problem. At this point I cannot access some programs:
Internet explorer
windows firewall
ad-aware
i can scan with mbam and other prograns but there is something preventing me from accessing internet explorer.
It seems as thought the virus is gone.

Yes it is an ugly infection and can really mess things up. Please try the following and see if it helps or not.
Please download and run the following fix from Microsoft How do I restore security settings to the default settings?
When completed please reboot your computer.
You may have corrupted files on your disk. Please try running the following.
First close ALL Applications as this routine will automatically restart your computer.
Click on START - RUN and copy / paste the following entry into the box and click OK
There are various issues that can cause loss of Internet activity. It could be Malware that is on your system that needs to be removed first, however it could also be from the removal of Malware or similar issues. Step one should be to ensure you remove any Malware from your system first.
Depending on what is wrong there are 3 methods of repair that you can try to re-establish connectivity.
METHOD 1
LSP-Fix
Repairs Winsock 2 settings, caused by buggy or improperly-removed Internet software, that result in loss of Internet access
LSP-Fix Home Page
Using LSP-Fix to remove Spyware & Hijackers
METHOD 2
WinSock XP Fix 1.2
It can often cure the problem of lost connections after the removal of Adware components or improper uninstall of firewall applications or other tools that modify the XP network and Winsock settings.
If you encounter connection problems after removing network related software, Adware or after registry clean-up; and all other ways fail, then give WinSock XP Fix a try.
Download WinSock XP Fix 1.2
METHOD 3
Microsoft KB article to reset TCP/IP
One of the components of the Internet connection on your computer is a built-in set of instructions called TCP/IP. TCP/IP can sometimes become corrupted. If you cannot connect to the Internet and you have tried all other methods to resolve the problem, TCP/IP might be causing it.
Because TCP/IP is a core component of Windows, you cannot remove it. However, you can reset TCP/IP to its original state by using the NetShell utility (netsh)

Just checking back to see how things are going. Please post a status update. Thanks.
Thank you but no luck, it did not work.
Let me see if I can be a little more detailed on whats going on:
I CAN access the internet through Firefox and Outlook connects and downloads mail.
I CANNOT access SOME exe programs : internet explorer, ad-aware are 2 that I know of. When i try to run IE it says: windows cannot access the specified device, path or file. You may not have the appropriate permission to access the item.
Also when I try to access windows firewall from the control panel i get an error: Windows firewall settings cannot be displayed because the associated service is not running. Do you want to start windows firewall/ics service? When I answer yes it say: Windows cannot start the windows firewall/ics service.
Thanks again!

Well can't guarantee this will work but please give it a try.
Download and run Win32kDiag:
Please let it run for at least an hour without bothering it regardless of what it says. Then post back the log.
Download and run Win32kDiag:
- Download Win32kDiag from any of the following locations and save it to your Desktop.
- Double-click Win32kDiag.exe to run Win32kDiag and let it finish.
- When it states "Finished! Press any key to exit...", press any key on your keyboard to close the program.
- Double-click on the Win32kDiag.txt file that is located on your Desktop and post the entire contents of that log as a reply to this topic, please do not attach the file.
Please let it run for at least an hour without bothering it regardless of what it says. Then post back the log.

Go to start > run and copy and paste the following command in the field:
"%userprofile%\desktop\win32kdiag.exe" -f -r
This should restore permissions on locked files and remove mountpoints.
Then try the following
Please download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.
**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved and renamed following this process directly to your desktop**
If you still cannot get this to run, try booting into Safe Mode, and run it there.
To boot into Safe Mode, tap F8 after BIOS, and just before the Windows logo appears. A list of options will appear, select "Safe Mode."
If this doesn't work either, try the same method (above method), but name Combofix.exe to iexplore.exe instead, or winlogon.exe..
This because It also happens in some cases that malware blocks EVERY process except for what is in its own whitelist, so this whitelist also includes system important processes such as iexplore.exe, explorer.exe, winlogon.exe...

- If you are using Firefox, make sure that your download settings are as follows:
- Tools->Options->Main tab
- Set to "Always ask me where to Save the files".
- Tools->Options->Main tab
- During the download, rename Combofix to Combo-Fix as follows:

- It is important you rename Combofix during the download, but not after.
- Please do not rename Combofix to other names, but only to the one indicated.
- Close any open browsers.
- Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
-----------------------------------------------------------
- Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
- Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.

- Close any open browsers.
- WARNING: Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet as soon as it starts
- Please do not attempt to re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.
- If there is no internet connection after running Combofix, then restart your computer to restore back your connection.

No changes. I have attached the logs and had to split the combofix log in two due to the size.
Thanks.
