Ok even after all these years of using computers and learning as much as possible as i can about them, i had one thing bugging me for many years and funny enough i never thought to ask about it.
Ok so we all know it is quite unsafe to ever go on the internet without an antivirus program with some sort of internet security enabled. So how come some antivirus programs force you to connect to the internet and have no other av installed before you have completely installed their program?? I realize some have registration requests etc, but am I fully protected still while installing?? Lets use an example with Avira. Avira is very strict about having any other av software installed at the time of their installation. But am i missing something?? If i uninstall my other av software and then start installing avira, isnt there a window where malware or spyware could find its way in somehow before Avira has finished its setup??
So anyone who could answer this buring question i would be grateful. I am always so paranoid when installinh any new a software that wants me to completely uninstall any other av software (even though i know its safe and necessary) but am i still protected most of the time while installing a new av program and having the net connected??

I first download the full anti virus application from the new vendor then I download the removal application from the vender I want to remove as it has to be removed completly not just using Add/Remove Programs.
I find Anti-Malware Toolkit helpful in finding the un-install routines:

There are others that you can install from a CD - My ASUS motherboard CD comes with a free "sample" version of Norton -I did not have the net on then -
You could register it on the net if you wanted, but by then I had discovered what YoKenny found - Re off line install-
Actually I put a remover (most likely Spybot) on first thinking it was an anti virus at the time -

I have to admit to being connected to the net while without my AV either installed or disabled as I tried to check its "cleaness" though I made note of the correct site to go to for the AVs and the website that was helping me at the time and did not go on any other sites apart from these as it was nessacery at the time.
Though most vendors with allow you to DL the program before you disconnect to install it.
At the time I was worried about the health of my PC so did not think.
