I use XP Pro SP 2.
After i plug-in a USB memory (or mouse) the computor tries to start but can't untill i remove it. This happens 15 times of 20.
I have not changed any hardware and i have done a clean install of XP on a new disc since this problem started.
I use a 500w power supply

Welcome to Malwarebytes! Can you give us more info please? What is your AV? and did it pick up anything on a scan? Installing a mouse depending on the type, ie: my optical wireless mouse, it prompts me for drivers, after saying "found new hardware" Removing a usb item you should check on the taskbar, for a software removal icon... your not just removing it while the pc is on? correct? please post back & someone will try to help you.... regards...

No, i even did a scan with GMER.
My optical mouse is old but i dont think you understand. I know how to remove a usb item safely but it was a long time since i did that, on this PC.
When i plug-in a usb item it will always shut down -> reboot, i had this problem one year.
The mouse problem is worse because like today i was only able to start with an old non optical mouse (uses less power?).
Tomorrow it might work with my optical, you never know but i will notice this right away. In this case, PC is rebooting after 5 sec over and over if i dont remove the mouse.
PC can also reboot when the optical mouse is found or when i use it for the first time after roobot. I'am 99% sure this is a hardware issue, i use default settings i bios.

I have to ask the basic questions, 1 year is a long time to deal with this problem! I'm sure its a hardware issue.. When you try a different mouse, what happens? and I would use a basic mouse... that seems strange also. Device manager has no flags? post back and let us know....regards...

A usb wheel mouse works fine every time but the optical dont (i tested two). I belive the pc reboots at the same time as the optical mouse light flashes.
Device manager is ok.
Sometimes i can fix this problem by using a usb to ps/2 adapter to connect to ps/2 but that can also make the pc reboot....
I'am thinking about bying a new power supply thats why i wonder if a value below is 12V is normal, 11.19-11.31V (Everest corp). I read something about +-5% is ok

I confess, your issue is one I have not ran into! but a basic mouse would be cheaper than a Power supply. If you know your way around electronics I would probe all ares from the power supply to the mouse port & mouse itself. Capacitance may change if a capacitor dries up some! any number of things, hope someone else may have an idea & post it.... good luck .....regards..

Just a suggestion (unrelated to your prob.):
Why can't you Update your OS to SP3.
Any reason for not updating?
