Hi,

My name is Brenda and I am new to these forums. (I have just joined). I do not know if this is the correct forum to post this particular complaint, if it is not, could you please tell me in which forum I should post it please?

Recently, whenever I do a 'quick scan' in Malwarebytes, Two infections come up as shown in the log as below.

I checked in quarantine and they also show there as well. I also delete them in quarantine, but sure enough each time I boot up again and do another quick scan, they are there again and I cannot seem to shift them.

I do not believe they are doing any harm within the system because they are either held in quarantine or found each time I do a quick scan when I first boot up my computer.

Has anybody got any idea how I can get rid of them permanently from my operating system so that when I reboot up for the first time of the day and do a quick scan, they will not be there anymore?

Any help with dealing with this will be most appreciated

Hi,

What got detected here is that the associations for regfiles and screenfiles are pointing to notepad.exe which is wrong.
When you let mbam "fix" it, it will restore it to the correct association.
It looks like a 3rd party application is restoring it then again to the wrong association notepad.exe again. This can be caused by system tweak tools or registry monitor programs such as Teatimer or Adwatch.
To find out,

* Download Trend Micro Hijack This™
Doubleclick the HJTInstall.exe to start it.
By default it will install HijackThis in the Program Files\Trendmicro folder and create a desktop shortcut.
HijackThis will open after install. Press the Scan button below.
This will start the scan and open a log.
Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply.

Hi Brenda,

I guess it's your Windows Defender interfering here as this one also watches registry modifications...
So please turn it off for now so malwarebytes can restore the default associations again...

To turn real-time protection off
Open Windows Defender. (Click Start, click Programs, and then click Windows Defender.)
Click Tools, and then click General Settings.
Under Real-time protection options, Uncheck the Turn on real-time protection (recommended) check box.
Then click Save.

When your hijackthislog is clean again, please turn on the realtime protection again.

Also,

First of all, please update MalwareBytes, because the databaseversion and program is outdated.

• Start MalwareBytes and click the Update tab. There click "Check for updates"
  
• Once the updates are downloaded, perform a quick scan again.
  
• The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  
• When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  
• Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  
• When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  
• The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  
• Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log, then we'll proceed from there with new steps.

Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove,you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts,click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer,please do so immediatly.

Extra note, you also have two unwanted programs installed here. The Ask Toolbar and KingKong Search Toolbar. The second one is a Softomate variant and this one is known where dll files for their toolbars contain some spyware/adware functionality. This is not always the case for softomate toolbars, however, in this case, I know this Toolbar comes bundled with other programs and used to reset Homepage and searches as well to kingkongsearch.
That's why I recommend you uninstall it.

Hi Mieke

I am confused on a couple of things.

Firstly, I did what you said- opened Windows Defender, then I clicked tools as you mentioned. I could not see a 'General Settings' option as you mentioned. Instead, a screen came up as shown in my first attachment. (I've tried uploading a word document as an attachment but it was telling me that I could not use this type of attachment). Can you tell me why this will not upload? How do I upload a picture so I can show you what I am trying to describe?

You will see, it does not say 'General Settings' anywhere. So instead, I chose the 'Options' icon and it brought up another screen as shown in my second attachment. (Tried uploading this attachment but it would not let me). This is where I got confused. Is this the screen that you meant? I could not find anywhere where it stated to turn on or of 'Real Time'. Could you be more specific as to where I find it please?

Secondly, once I find out how to turn off 'Real Time'. I know how to update Malwarebytes and I know how to delete any infections. When you say to then, run again, 'Hijackthislog', do you mean the program that you asked me to download in your first post? To run that again?

Regarding the 'King Kong Capture' program, I use this quite a lot and find it quite useful. Do I really need to uninstall it? Is there any way, I could keep it and rid it of any infections? Without it, I have no screen capture software.

The 'Ask Toolbar', I can do without, perhaps you can tell me how I get rid of this or uninstall it?

If you use the King Kong Capture toolbar frequently, then keep it. After all, softomate toolbars are no real threat, but we prefer to report the user about this since some other scanners may see it as malicious.
So, you may keep it if you want.

For the Ask Toolbar, there should be a reference in add & remove program to uninstall it. If not, then let me know (it may be named different then)

Okay, this is where we are at:

I turned off Defender real time and Defender itself by un-checking both the boxes. (You were right all along. I found the boxes. I just did not scroll down enough!)

Then I updated mb's, performed a quick scan and at sure enough, it showed that the two infections. So then, I deleted both of those and re-started the computer.

Once re-started, I performed another quick scan in mb's, and the scan showed clean without the infections. I then tried something else. I shut down the computer completely. I did this because, when I reboot from a full shut down, that's when the infections normally reappear. They did not reappear this time.

After that, I ran HijackThislog.

So, the first log shown is after I turned off Windows Defender. The log then showed the two infections. Then I deleted the two infections in mb's. Then I re-started the computer, performed another scan and this is shown in the second log. Then I shut down the computer completely, turned it back on again, and then I performed another scan which is log 3. Then I ran HijackThislog and this is shown in the 4th log.

As of yet, I have not put back on Windows Defender. Should I do this now?

One other question; I misunderstood you when you was talking about King Kong Capture. You mentioned the actual program in the toolbar. I do not use it from there. I use it from my desktop. Does that mean I can delete it from my toolbar? And by doing this, I end the problem? Or did you mean I had to uninstall the whole program completely?

No, I would leave it since I don't know if the same components are also needed for the desktop launch. In either way, as I already explained, this toolbar is no real risk though. It's a softomate variant so low risk.

I still see the Ask toolbar present, so I guess it has a different name in add&remove programs.
Let's have a look and do next:

Open HijackThis, click Config, click Misc Tools
Click "Open Uninstall Manager"
Click "Save List" (generates uninstall_list.txt)

Yes, please enable Windows defender here again. It shouldn't interfere anymore since mbam removed what was found. Before it was Windows Defender blocking the malwarebytes restore of those values.

That's because I did not remove it. I completely forgot to do so. But I have done it now along with the Babylon toolbar as well.

Open HijackThis, click Config, click Misc Tools
Click "Open Uninstall Manager"
Click "Save List" (generates uninstall_list.txt)
Click Save, copy and paste the results in your next post.

Hi Mieke,

After turning my computer on today, I updated Malwarebytes and did another scan and the two infections were back again! So doing all what we did, obviously did not work. Have you got any other ideas how I can get rid of these?

Do you think I need to get rid of Vuze altogether and uninstall it completely to stop this happening? It is driving me insane!

If so, then it makes sense and just changes it again as it was before.
So as long as Windows defender is active here, everytime you let malwarebytes fix it, it will make the change back undone.
I don't have Windows defender unfortunately, so I cannot test either, but after you enabled Windows defender, did it display an alert of values being changed? Because in that case you had to Permit there (as for permit the changes, which is restore of values in the regisrry). If you choose deny, Windows defender will set it back again.

I have always had Windows Defender, and I never had a problem in the past like this with Malwarebytes and WD.

I do not recall seeing a display of values being changed, but then I did not really look. Could you tell me what to do again please and what I have to do with WD afterwards? Perhaps I missed something.

The only other thing I could possibly do Mieke, is uninstall malwarebytes and then reinstall it. What do you think?

Hi,

I thought that Windows defender wouldn't see this change anymore, but it appears it did. It's not malwarebytes here being the cause, it's Windows defender.

Let me explain..

Windows defender monitors registry changes.
In your case, some file associations were incorrectly set in the registry.
You did an mbam scan and mbam sees these incorrectly set associations in the registry.
When you let mbam "remove" the infection (which isn't really an infection), in this case, mbam restores the associations in the registry to default again.
But what happens here is, since Windows defender monitors registry changes, it sees the registry restore malwarebytes did as a change, so Windows defender sees this as a suspicious act and blocks these changes and "restores" what mbam actually fixed to the incorrect data again.

Normally, as I asked you to do, when you disable Windows Defender, then scan with malwarebytes, let it fix those registry keys, then it won't come back if you rescan with mbam again.
Normally, when you enable Windows defender afterwards again, it should give an alert because it sees that change again and in this case you should select to permit (the change).
If it didn't give an alert, then I guess the best you can do is uninstall Windows defender...
Then reboot
then rescan with malwarebytes and let it fix those registry entries again
then reboot once again
then rescan once again with malwarebytes to verify (scan should come up clean)
then reinstall Windows defender again. Then Windows defender *should* accept the correct settings.

It is very strange that you mention this Mieke. Quite recently, when I have first started up the computer, a white balloon always appears and I cannot stop it from showing each time I start up the computer.

In the white balloon, it says; 'Windows has blocked some startup programs' - and then it goes on to say; 'Windows blocks programs that require permission to run when Windows starts. Click to view blocked programs.' This is Windows Defender.

When I open it, there are various programs. I believe I can choose to either have them on the system tray, or not. Some I can hide in the system tray.

One of the programs in this list, is iolo, it seems just to have come out of nowhere. It is telling me that it is 'Not yet classified'.

It is telling me that it is File Version 1.1.9.0. I do not know if this helps at all?

I looked at the post you mentioned above, and it does seem like the same problem!

Can you tell me what to do now then please? Also, if I uninstall Windows Defender, I have not got the application to reinstall it afterwards. Would you happen to have this please?

Also, could you tell me how I stop the white balloon from coming up each time I start Windows please?

The white balloon is indeed displayed because of Windows defender, because there were system changes in between, most probably programs you installed or uninstalled and Windows defender sees this as a hijack attempt and blocks it because of that.

So, as I already said, the best way (and easiest way) to deal with this is to uninstall Windows defender and reinstall it afterwards again AFTER you have rebooted at least once and fixed the entries again with malwarebytes.
So this means in the order I already posted previously:

Please run malwarebytes again and let if fix what it found. After reboot, when Windows defender shows that balloon again, please permit it to run the blocked program. So in your list, there should be a lot of blocked programs in there (which are in a lot of cases also orphaned startup entries which Windows defender also blocked, so they don't delete)

let me know if that allows mbam as well to fix those registry entries and keep them fixed without Windows defender setting them back.
If Windows Defender keeps interfering here all the time, then I guess the best action to take is to disable the Windows defender Realtime protection, because it's a hassle to have it running as a realtime guard if it's too confusing how to properly configure it the way you want.

Here's the thing, I looked at all of the programmes within the balloon and none of them were actually saying 'Blocked'. They were actually saying, either 'Permitted' or 'Not yet classified'.

So what do I do when they are saying this?

When I right click the balloon, there is one line that says: 'Run Blocked Program' and the program that it is showing as blocked, is 'Malwarebytes'. Yet when I right click the balloon and right click the line that says: 'Show or remove blocked startup programs', it is showing 'Malwarebytes' in the list, as 'Not yet classified' and no actual program in the list, is stated as blocked as mentioned in my first paragraph above.

It is very puzzling. What should I do now?
