My daughter has asked me to help her with problems she's having on her ancient desktop computer that she's owned since October 28, 2002. She complains that the hourglass icon takes about 15 minutes after boot up, before she can actually start using any programs.
She has a Hewlett-Packard Pavilion AMD Athlon™ XP 2400+ 2.00 GHz, 992 MB of RAM
Her HD is a Samsung SV8004H
She has an ATAPI CD/DVD 48X DVD/CD-ROM Drive
She has an HL-DT-ST CD-RW GCE-8481B DVD/CD-ROM Drive
She is running Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition Version 2002 Service Pack 3
She has File System: NTFS Used Space: 43.4 GB Free Space: 23.7 GB Capacity: 67.2 GB
She is using AVG Free and the TRIAL Norton Anti Virus that came installed on her HP computer.
The first thing I did was to turn off system restore, so that would free up a lot of space on her HD. I then turned it back on.
I then downloaded and installed CCleaner ran it and cleaned up quite a bit of files, also ran Ccleaner's Regisitry cleaner and let it fix issues. I also ran cwshredder and it found and deleted cool web search. Then I downloaded Defraggler and ran that, that alone took 2 days to run! I then download a-squared free and installed and ran that, it told me she had 3 dangerous objects. I let it repair them. I then downloaded and installed ZoneAlarm Free. I then ran her Spybot Search & Destroy which she already had on her system. I did run all the updates first. It deleted probably about 100 issues.
I've probably run way to many programs and have probably made things worse for her... *sigh*
I went in to msconfig to selective startup and unchecked microsoft office and various other startup programs that did not need to be running at startup, but her system is still very sluggish.
I tried running the Kaspersky Online Scan, but after waiting for 3 days and it was still only at 72%, I gave up and closed the window. I then ran HiJackThis v2.0.2. and will post the log at the end of this message. I also ran Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware v1.41 and will post that log as well.
Thanks in advance for any advice you can give us.

Please download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.
**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved and renamed following this process directly to your desktop**
If you still cannot get this to run, try booting into Safe Mode, and run it there.
To boot into Safe Mode, tap F8 after BIOS, and just before the Windows logo appears. A list of options will appear, select "Safe Mode."
If this doesn't work either, try the same method (above method), but name Combofix.exe to iexplore.exe instead, or winlogon.exe..
This because It also happens in some cases that malware blocks EVERY process except for what is in its own whitelist, so this whitelist also includes system important processes such as iexplore.exe, explorer.exe, winlogon.exe...
**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved and renamed following this process directly to your desktop**
- If you are using Firefox, make sure that your download settings are as follows:
- Tools->Options->Main tab
- Set to "Always ask me where to Save the files".
- Tools->Options->Main tab
- During the download, rename Combofix to Combo-Fix as follows:

- It is important you rename Combofix during the download, but not after.
- Please do not rename Combofix to other names, but only to the one indicated.
- Close any open browsers.
- Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
-----------------------------------------------------------
- Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
- Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.
-----------------------------------------------------------
- Close any open browsers.
- WARNING: Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet as soon as it starts
- Please do not attempt to re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.
- If there is no internet connection after running Combofix, then restart your computer to restore back your connection.
-----------------------------------------------------------
- Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
- Double click on combo-Fix.exe & follow the prompts.
- When finished, it will produce a report for you.
- Please post the "C:\Combo-Fix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review.

No problem. If you can though it might be easier or better if you can enlist the aid of a friend to help you out with this. The process can sometimes take a while and require a lot of attention to detail that you may not be up to if you're not feeling well.

Well for the most part it does not appear that any Malware is still present on the system. There are a few things we can look at to see if we can speed things up for her. One of the potential big things there is the use of ZoneAlarm. Though it is a good firewall product it is a very large resource hog and does cause quite a bit of slow down issues for systems. I would recommend removing it and using one with lower resource requirements. You might even be okay using the built-in firewall.
I would like to see an Anti-Virus scan though to help ensure that there is no Malware on the system, then we can look at doing some other tasks to speed up the computer.
Please temporarily disable your current Anti-Virus in order to run this Online AV scanner.
Run Eset NOD32 Online AntiVirus
Note: You will need to use Internet Explorer for this scan.

- Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
- Click Start
- When asked, allow the activex control to install
- Disable your current Antivirus software. You can usually do this with its Notfication Tray icon near the clock.
- Click Start
- Make sure that the option "Remove found threats" is Un-checked, and the option "Scan unwanted applications" is checked
- Click Scan
- Wait for the scan to finish
- Re-enable your Anvirisus software.
- A logfile is created and located at C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt. Please include this on your post.

Dear Ron,
Thanks for all of your help. I uninstalled AVG 8.5 Free and ZoneAlarm Free, and Spybot S&D yesterday. I finally broke down and went to Best Buy and bought Kaspersky Internet Security 2009 for my daughter. Installed it, and everything seems to be running as good as her 2 little gigs of Ram will let it. LOL! Since I bought the 3 user version, I'll put it on my hubby's and my computer later today.
Thanks again so much for your help! :-)
I hope you have a good day today and an even better day tomorrow!

Okay then I'll close your post soon so that other don't post into it and leave you with this information and suggestions.
So how did I get infected in the first place?
[indent]At this time your system appears to be clean. Nothing else in the logs indicates that you are still infected.
Now that you appear to be clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
Remove all but the most recent Restore Point on Windows XP
[indent]You should Create a New Restore Point to prevent possible reinfection from an old one.
Some of the malware you picked up could have been saved in System Restore.
Since this is a protected directory your tools cannot access to delete these files, they sometimes can reinfect your system if you accidentally use an old restore point.
Setting a new restore point AFTER cleaning your system will help prevent this and enable your computer to "roll-back" to a clean working state.
The easiest and safest way to do this is:

The easiest and safest way to do this is:
- Go to Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools and click "System Restore".
- If the shortcut is missing you can also click on START > RUN > and type in %SystemRoot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe and click OK
- Choose the radio button marked "Create a Restore Point" on the first screen then click "Next".
- Give the new Restore Point a name, then click "Create".
- The new point will be stamped with the current date and time. Keep a log of this so you can find it easily should you need to use System Restore.
- Then use the Disk Cleanup to remove all but the most recently created Restore Point.
- Go to Start > Run and type: Cleanmgr.exe
- Select the drive where Windows is installed and click "Ok". Disk Cleanup will scan your files for several minutes, then open.
- Click the "More Options" tab, then click the "Clean up" button under System Restore.
- Click Ok. You will be prompted with "Are you sure you want to delete all but the most recent restore point?"
- Click Yes, then click Ok.
- Click Yes again when prompted with "Are you sure you want to perform these actions?"
- Disk Cleanup will remove the files and close automatically.
- On the Disk Cleanup tab, if the System Restore: Obsolete Data Stores entry is available remove them also.
- These are files that were created before Windows was reformatted or reinstalled. They are obsolete and you can delete them.
