I just have a quick question,

When downloading the newest Java version, does it matter where its downloaded from? I'm thinking not but I just wanted to get an opinion from someone who might know better than me Also, the main reason I was asking was, the third link looked as though it was a much smaller download size than the other two links, but now I realize that its the exact same size.

I have these three links:

The third link actually looks easier to use

@mountaintree: I always use the third link you posted myself, as it has the option to detect the current version you have installed so it tells you if you need an update, although the SE link usually has the releases available for download a bit sooner.

I think I will stick with that link then, as the other two (especially the second) quite confuse me, and the third link is much simpler... it detects your browser automatically too

Another question for you... is there a different version or download for Vista and XP, do you know, or not? I'm going to be downloading it tonight or tomorrow for the Vista I'll be working on It looks like there is nothing different for XP or Vista now that I took a second look, sorry for the question.

Nope, it's the same for both, but they have a seperate version for x64 browsers (like IE x64) which no one uses anyway . And yeah, that's the reason I send everyone there, it's much less confusing and will give them the version they need.

I've never heard of x64 browser... hmm.

Yeah, if you have a 64 bit version of Windows, you also get a 64 bit version and 32 bit version of IE, although the 32 bit is set to be the default for the sake of compatibility since many plugins don't support 64 bit versions of IE (such as Flash Player).

There's also a 64 bit version of FireFox .

Hmm strange, I just downloaded from the third link, and its only 697 KB for the Java, I find that just a bit strange? :/ When I test-downloaded it (clicked on the link but did not start the download) from work, it was 10 MB. The site also said it is 10 mb.

I downloaded it from Firefox, but I guess since they use IE and Firefox, that I should download for both, what do you think?

Download and Update Java Runtime
The most current version of Sun Java is: Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 16.

• Go to http://java.sun.com/...loads/index.jsp
  
• Go to Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) - JRE 6 Update 16 about half way down the page and click on the Download button.
  
• In Platform box choose Windows.
  
• Check the box to Accept License Agreement and click Continue.
  
• Click on Windows Offline Installation, click on the link under it which says jre-6u16-windows-i586.exe and save the downloaded file to your desktop.
  
• Install the new version by running the newly-downloaded file with the java icon which will be on your desktop, and follow the on-screen instructions.
  
• Uncheck the Toolbar button (unless you want the toolbar)
  
• Reboot your computer

As far as I know, there isn't a separate version of Java by browser (ex IE and Firefox). If you install Java once, it should work for all browsers that support it.

That's because it gives you the web installer, it's just a small download manager and setup program that downloads Java to a temp folder and installs it for you .

Oh. Its just that when I used the third link, after I clicked on the icon, It said for Firefox/Mozilla and when I opened it up in IE (which I rarely use but do sometimes) after clicking it said for IE.

Oh, okay, thanks. So can I carry that on a thumb then? Will I still need to download 10 MB after using the web installer?

Yes, you would. For carrying on your flash drive, you'd want to grab this one which is linked to on this page which was posted previously. It's the offline installer, which is best for slow connections and also handy when you don't have internet access.

I can understand the confusion on whether there's a separate Java version for each browser version but I can assure you, that is not the case. Flash player on the other hand does have a version just for IE and then another version for other browsers (Firefox, Opera, etc). They do it that way because IE uses Active X.

Mm yeah. I ended up installing BOTH versions of flash on the system that I am working on, but I only have the version for FF on my machine, since I hardly ever use IE, hehe.
