Hello all,

I'm assisting a workmate with a malware issue. I tried MalwareBytes 1.41, HiJackThis, and ComboFix - all of them close immedaitely and can't be rerun.

About the only thing I've been able to do successfully is run Win32kFix.exe, and the log is posted below.
This is a much more serious infection than I've encountered before, and I'd really like to clean it without having to do a system rebuild.
I would really appreciate some guidance! Thank you.

Hi,


1. Please download The Avenger2 by SwanDog46
2. Unzip avenger.exe to your desktop.
3. Copy the text in the following codebox by selecting all of it, and pressing (<Control> + C) or by right clicking and selecting "Copy"

Files to move:
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\logevent.dll | C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\eventlog.dll

4. Now start The Avenger2 by double clicking avenger.exe on your desktop.
5. Read the prompt that appears, and press OK.
6. Paste the script into the textbox that appears, using (<Control> + V) or by right clicking and choosing "Paste".
7. Press the "Execute" button.
8. You will be presented with 2 confirmation prompts. Select yes on each. Your system will reboot.
Note: It is possible that Avenger will reboot your system TWICE.
9. Upon reboot, a command prompt window will appear on your screen for a few seconds, and then Avenger's log will open. Please paste that log here in your next post.

Also,

Go to start > run and copy and paste the following command in the field:

"%userprofile%\desktop\win32kdiag.exe" -f -r

This should restore permissions on locked files and remove mountpoints.

I was able to successfully clean the system yesterday, using the process you described. I did a number of scans (Kaspersky, Malwarebytes) when done and everything came up clean.

Is there a thread on this site that one can use to learn how to interpret logs from HJT, Win32kdiag, etc? I am an IT Admin and I expect I'll be running into this kind of thing in the future.

Good to hear you already fixed it.
To interpret these logs is a matter of experience (going through such logs daily) and recognise good from bad. If you want to learn this is well, there are some online training schools for this. SWI is a forum where you can get free training: http://www.spywarein...hp?showtopic=34
