Per the request of this site, I am resubmitting my log files. After running Hijack, I was presented a sscreen with more than 20 different items that Hijack either didn't seem to recognize or thought were infected files. Some of them were Internet start up page settings, others were HKLM commands. Either way none of the files were checked, so I did not delete anything from that screen. In short, MWB's deletions are not surviving the log off process, and the issues reappear. Also, none of my System Restore logs from the previous month survived, so I cannot restore back to a previous version.
I am providing information taken from the Administrator user, with the Internet disabled. I am not using my normal admin login, but the overall Administrator login accessed from CTRL-ALT-DEL. In addition, the trojans keep shutting of my Avast and disabling Regedit and Restore on other user accounts. I am running XP SP3.

Hi,
First of all, please update MalwareBytes, because the databaseversion is outdated.
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediatly.
Can you also do this via the normal admin login? Because I need the HijackThislog from that account (where you got infected) since the HKCU keybranche is different there.
First of all, please update MalwareBytes, because the databaseversion is outdated.
- Start MalwareBytes and click the Update tab. There click "Check for updates"
- In case you can't update the database via the update option, please download and install the database from here. Only do this when the update option doesn't work.
- Once the updates are downloaded, perform a quick scan again.
- The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
- When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
- Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
- When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
- The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
- Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log, then we'll proceed from there with new steps.

Hi,
I see you have Windows Defender running.
The real-time protection may interfere with the fixes, that's why I want you to turn it off.
To turn real-time protection off
Open Windows Defender. (Click Start, click Programs, and then click Windows Defender.)
Click Tools, and then click General Settings.
Under Real-time protection options, Uncheck the Turn on real-time protection (recommended) check box.
Then click Save.
When your hijackthislog is clean again, please turn on the realtime protection again.
Then, * Start HijackThis, close all open windows leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following:
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {30911cdf-e3df-4e9f-ab28-8ab999507fbe} - tazabufa.dll (file missing)
O20 - AppInit_DLLs: rotesiye.dll
* Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.
Make sure your Internet Explorer is closed when you click Fix Checked!
Post a new HijackThislog made from normal mode + a new malwarebytes scan+log also from normal mode

First, the good news:
Was able to delete the two items from HijackThis - did that in safe mode because of the bad news
The Bad News:
I cannot start MalwareBytes or HijackThis any longer in normal mode - now, I am instantly taken to a new program that I've never seen before called Total Security. In addition, my desktop image has been taken over by a red-lettered "WARNING! YOUR'RE IN DANGER (misspelled as well!)" sign pasted across the desktop with a bunch of garbage about emploring me to "protect your boss, your wife, your children" below it. In addition, the Task Manager has been disabled.
I have the Internet totally disconnected from the machine so it looks like we're going to have to try something else.
Any suggestions?
PS - How can I know when you've posted a response? Usually, I have to search for my posting each time I want back in. Also, leaving the computer on is not an option :-) Thanks.

Hi,
It looks like you got reinfected again.
Please run another scan with malwarebytes in safe mode and let it remove/quarantine what it found.
Reboot afterwards and post the malwarebytes log in your next reply together with a new HijackThislog.
Normally you get notified when I replied here. This is a default setting in your control panel. A mail will be sent everytime someone replies in this thread, so please check your settings under "My Controls" > Email settings and check:
Enable 'Email Notification' by default?
If ticked, choose default type: "Immediate Email notification".
If you have entered a valid mailaddress, you will get a notification.
But normally, I always reply within 5 minutes after you have posted (in case I'm not asleep since we may be in different timezones)

Things are running a lot better now - removed a couple of items I found in HijackThis which seems to have cleared things, but I haven't reconnected to the web except to upload the log items.
Going forward, it looks like I need to re-evaluate how I compute and download on the web. I had thought about the following and wanted to get your opinion:
- As a teacher, I'm downloading PDF's from the web all the time - I think I might have found a video file that was the culprit this time. I still need to be able to download files, so I'm thinking of buying a netbook just for this purpose, then running each downloaded file through every spyware checker I have. Then, and only then, would I transfer it to other computers. The netbook would do nothing but download files and surf the Internet.
- This virus affected my desktop, which contains all my music and video files. Obviously, I need to do something else to protect these.
Any thoughts on this plan?
Thanks again,
Matt

Hi,
First of all, please make sure all your programs are up to date. For example, your pdf reader (which I guess is acrobat reader), also make sure it's up to date.
As for videos, when you want to watch a video and it asks to install additional components, then it may be malicious in 90% of the cases, this since your multimedia player should be able to have all codecs anyway to play these videos.
It may be easier & faster if you just upload it to Virustotal to have a check: http://www.virustotal.com/
This may be an idea for you as well: http://www.sandboxie.com/
Windows SteadyState is another option. I've blogged about it last year: http://miekiemoes.blogspot.com/2008/06/pro...puter-with.html
Anyway, also read my Prevention page with lots of info and tips how to prevent this in the future.
And if you want to improve speed/system performance after malware removal, take a look here.
Extra note: Make sure your programs are up to date - because older versions may contain Security Leaks. To find out what programs need to be updated, please run the Secunia Software Inspector Scan.
Happy Surfing again!

Good information in your blog - never thought about not running two real-time protection programs at the same time. I still have real-time on Defender turned off, but it looks like I'm running real-time on the new Ad-aware Free Anniversary edition. Do you have a preference as to which one to run?
Funny thing happened once I cleaned everything up - I had MWB run a quick scan just for fun and I picked up two more trojans! MWB cleaned them right up, but it looks like I might still have something in here. Is Avast!, Spybot, Defender, and Ad-aware going to be enough, given I picked up two more Trojans?
Again, the blog looks great - thanks for everything.

For spyware scanners it shouldn't be a problem to have more than one in the background running as a realtime monitor as they shouldn't interfere with eachother, however, keep in mind that the more realtime scanners are running in the background, how slower everything goes.
I recommend/prefer Malwarebytes
Anyway, it's your choice which one you like the best. Everyone has a different view on this. This also because every computer is different and it's not only a matter of how good the scanner is, but also how good it works with your Windows. I mean, for example, on some computers, the Adware realtime protection causes a huge slowdown while on other computers, people don't notice a slowdown at all.
This could only be leftovers. We update mbam at least 5 times daily with new detections, so that may explain it, because detection was maybe added for these leftovers.
