I am currently unable to run any of the antispyware programs on my daughter's Toshiba laptop and therefore have no logs to post. When I ran malwarebytes, hijackthis, superantispyware, adaware, etc., each ran for about 5 seconds then disappeared. Next time I tried to run any of these programs I get the message "Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item." This is happening in both regular and safe modes. I can no longer access Internet Explorer either, same message as above: "Windows cannot access..."

I actually can run CCleaner in safe mode, but it didn't seem to make any difference and I can't access the internet to get any updates.

When I turn the computer on in regular mode, the following message appears: "The system is shutting down. Please save all work in progress and log off. All unsaved work will be lost. This shutdown was initiated by NT AUTHORITY SYSTEM. The system process:C\Windows\System32\services.exe terminated unexpectedly with status code 1073741482." It doesn't actually shut down, but all I ever see once the timer runs out is the desktop wallpaper and a working cursor. I can access the Task Manager, but any attempted action freezes it.

Is there anything I can do to save this computer shy of format c: ?

Thank you in advance.

Hello and Welcome to Malwarebytes Melissa.

Yes in most cases the computer can be cleaned up. Please follow the directions below, especially the part in green where it says even if you can't run any tools for logs. We don't do actual log repairs in this forum so you need to open a new post in the HJT forum as shown. Please be aware though that we are very busy and it could be a few days or more before we're able to get to you.

Scan and post logs - read note at bottom in green
If you're having Malware related issues with your computer that you're unable to resolve.
  • Please do not post any logs in the General forum. We do not work on any logs posted in the General forum.
  • Please do not install any software or use any removal/scanning tool except for those you're requested to run by the Helper that will assist you.
  • Using these other tools often makes the cleanup task more difficult and time consuming.
  • If you have already submitted for assistance at one of the other support sites on the Internet then you should not post a new log here, you should stay working with the Helper from that site until the issue is resolved.
  • Do not assume you're clean because you don't see something in the logs. Please wait until the person assisting you provides feedback.
  • There are often many others that require asistance as well, so please be patient. If no one has responded within 48 hours then please go ahead and post a request for review
  • NOTE: If for some reason you're unable to run some or any of the tools in the first link, then skip that step and move on to the next one. If you can't even run HijackThis, then just proceed and post a NEW topic as shown in the second link describing your issues and someone will assist you as soon as they can.
