For several days a DOS window (cmd.exe) would open and move so rapidly the contents could not be read. I tried tech support at HP. They could not stop it and want to reformat the hard drive. Except for being a nusiance nothing else seemed to be in trouble. Then for no good reason the problem stopped. Has this be observed by anyone else?

I have seen black CMD windows come up like that but it is normally cause some program is running an update (in a script format) and it does it through a command window. It also comes up if you run a login script.
It is possible that you have automatic updates turned on for HP software on that HP computer.
Just to be safe, run a scan with the latest version of MBAM to make sure there are not infections there.
