Yep, sure can. Might have a bit of trouble getting Windows 7 installed though if Windows 3.1 is the only media you have ;)

The last Ubuntu Linux update (9.04) overload their system, I can just imagine what Win 7 will be like. Hopefully, with Bill Gates' money Microsoft has a lot more servers than the Open Software foundation.

Thanks so much for this link! That was fascinating reading. Wow things have come a long way from the early days eh?

My father has been in the IT industry for 30 years and he well remembers some of these operating systems. I remember helping him out in my school holidays back in 1981 making up RACET NEC DOS user manuals in ring binders.

Businesses told not to skip Windows 7—and not to wait for SP1

Gartner is giving enterprises five suggestions for their Windows computers. The most important one is "don't skip Windows 7." Gartner says Windows 7 is a release that polishes the architectural changes that came with Windows Vista, and polishing releases should never be skipped.

Michael Silver, Research VP of Gartner, explains that organizations which skipped Windows 2000 and waited for XP had some problems, but organizations that adopted Windows 2000 and tried to skip Windows XP in order to wait for Vista had a much harder time. Since XP was a polishing release, according to Gartner, the company believes that Microsoft's most recent polishing release should not be skipped. Gartner analysts also note that "it's nearly inevitable for enterprises to move to Windows 7" but that the PC industry won't necessarily see a significant boost in PC sales immediately.

Silver also states that Windows 7 has important features that Vista did not have. He specifically underlines the improvements in memory management, noting that they will allow users to have a better experience than with Vista on PCs with similar or even slightly lower specifications.

The second suggestion Gartner makes is "don't wait for Windows 7 SP1 to begin testing and deployment." Many organizations typically wait until SP1 ships before testing and deploying a new client OS, but Gartner analysts suggest starting work now (especially if they skipped Vista). The third suggestion is closely related: "start working on migration projects now." The typical organization requires 12 to 18 months for waiting, testing, and planning before it can start deploying a new client OS; delays in getting started will only result in added costs later, Gartner claims.

The fourth suggestion is to "budget carefully" because migration costs vary significantly, depending on an organization's approach. Gartner estimates that migration costs per user range from $339 to $510 when moving from Windows Vista to Windows 7, but more than double, from $1,035 to $1,930, when looking at Windows XP to Windows 7.

The fifth suggestion is specifically made for companies that skipped Vista: "plan to be off Windows XP by Year-End 2012." The reasoning behind this is that although Microsoft will support Windows XP with security fixes until April 2014, past experience shows that independent software vendors (ISVs) will stop testing much earlier and thus new releases of critical business software will require Windows 7 long before Windows XP support ends. Organizations that get all of their users off Windows XP by the end of 2012 will thus avoid significant potential problems.

Back in March 2009, Gartner said that Windows 7 "should do a lot better" than Vista, so we're not too surprised by their suggestions here. The question we want answered is do you find them useful for your company?
