I have a Windows XP Pro, sp3 workstation that freaquently gets infected by various malware and viruses. I use the full AVG SBS Anti-Virus / Anti-Malware to protect the machine. Several months ago I started using Free MBAM for cleaning infections AVG couldn't find and have been manually updating and scanning with it weekly to fight off re-infections. I have suspected a hidden downloader for sometime. I upgraded to the full MBAM version and enabled real time protection and IP Protect. Sure enough there is one IP that is consistantly blocked about once per 2 hours. Googling the IP I get a various list of known malware apps that use it to "phone home".

AVG does a full scan and rootkit scan every day and it has been clean for about 2 weeks now. MBAM is not finding anything in the scans either, just the IP blocking. Per the forum instructions I am including the latest MBAM and HighJackThis log files as well as several of the URL's I found on this IP and the IP protect log. Any help finding this bugger would be most excellent!

Hello and Welcome to Malwarebytes. Sorry for the delay but as I'm sure you can tell we're quite busy, anyways.. please take a look and run the following . Make sure to disable your AV when you run it and post back the log.

Please download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.

**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved and renamed following this process directly to your desktop**
  • If you are using Firefox, make sure that your download settings are as follows:
    • Tools->Options->Main tab
    • Set to "Always ask me where to Save the files".
  • During the download, rename Combofix to Combo-Fix as follows:

    Posted Image

    Posted Image

  • It is important you rename Combofix during the download, but not after.
  • Please do not rename Combofix to other names, but only to the one indicated.
  • Close any open browsers.
  • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

    -----------------------------------------------------------

    • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
    • Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.

      -----------------------------------------------------------

    • Close any open browsers.
    • WARNING: Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet as soon as it starts
    • Please do not attempt to re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.
    • If there is no internet connection after running Combofix, then restart your computer to restore back your connection.

    -----------------------------------------------------------

  • Double click on combo-Fix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • Please post the "C:\Combo-Fix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review.
**Note: Do not mouseclick combo-fix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall**

If you still cannot get this to run, try booting into Safe Mode, and run it there.

To boot into Safe Mode, tap F8 after BIOS, and just before the Windows logo appears. A list of options will appear, select "Safe Mode."

If this doesn't work either, try the same method (above method), but name Combofix.exe to iexplore.exe instead, or winlogon.exe..
This because It also happens in some cases that malware blocks EVERY process except for what is in its own whitelist, so this whitelist also includes system important processes such as iexplore.exe, explorer.exe, winlogon.exe...

Ran Combofix as instructed. Here are the logs requested. Looks like Combofix did find and remove something. Let me know if there are next steps to take. I will be watching the forum most of the day.

I see you have Kaseya running on this system. Are you the System Admin?
This computer is on a Network Domain and as such it is not a Home Computer, thus without proper licensing you are in violation of the EULA.
I will asssist you in cleaning this computer but you need to visit this site and ensure you license MBAM appropriately.
http://www.malwareby...g/corporate.php

STEP 01
You show that you're running 2 Anti-Virus products. You can only run one as they conflict with each other. You need to choose one and fully remove the other one.
AVG Anti-Virus SBS Edition
Sunbelt VIPRE

STEP 02
Download but do not yet run ComboFix
If you have a previous version of Combofix.exe, delete it and download a fresh copy.
Download it to your DESKTOP - it MUST run from the Desktop
download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe
subs.geekstogo.com/ComboFix.exe

Using your mouse, Highlight and then Right-click | Copy the entire contents of the Code box below, including blank lines
KILLALL::
Driver::
fxdpn
worpo
File::
c:\windows\Hbehuraranawifuk.bin
c:\windows\Hkibeduvakadevip.dat
c:\windows\system32\drivers\pzaelminhzvuj.sys
c:\windows\system32\drivers\iclfjt.sys

Open a new Notepad session (Do not use a Word Processor or WordPad). Click "Format" and be certain that Word Wrap is not enabled. Right-click | Paste the Code box contents from above into Notepad. Click File, Save as..., and set the location to your Desktop, and enter (including quotation marks) as the filename: "CFscript.txt" .

Using your mouse, drag the new file CFscript.txt and drop it on the Combo-Fix.exe icon as shown:

  • Important: Have no other programs running. Your Task Bar should be clear of any program entries including your Browser.
  • Disconnect from the Internet.
  • Disable your Antivirus software. If it has Script Blocking features, please disable these as well.
  • A window may open with a series of Disclaimers. Accept the Disclaimers to start the fix.
  • It may identify that Recovery Console is not installed. Please accept when asked if you wish it to be installed.
When the scan completes Notepad will open with with your results log open. Do a File, Exit.
A caution - Do not run Combofix more than once. Do not touch your mouse/keyboard until the scan has completed, as this may cause the process to stall or your computer to lock. The scan will temporarily disable your desktop, and if interrupted may leave your desktop disabled. If this occurs, please reboot to restore the desktop. Even when ComboFix appears to be doing nothing, look at your Drive light. If it is flashing, Combofix is still at work.

Post back the Combofix log on your next reply.

STEP 03
Update and Scan with Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Start MalwareBytes AntiMalware (Vista users must Right click and choose RunAs Admin)
  • Please DO NOT run MBAM in Safe Mode unless requested to, you MUST run it in normal Windows mode.
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Select the Update tab
    • Click Update
  • When the update is complete, select the Scanner tab
  • Select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. please copy and paste the log into your next reply
    • If you accidently close it, the log file is saved here and will be named like this:
    • C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt
Then post back the MBAM log and a new Hijackthis log.

Ron,

I had a power failure while running Combofix. I believe it was in the middle of the scanning process at the time. Due to the cautions noted about running Combofix more than once I figured I better ask you before starting step 2 over again. Please advise on how to proceed.

Regarding your other questions:

System Admin? Yes, I am a system admin on this machine.

Licensing? Yes, MBAM is appropreately licensed on this machine (see the email I sent you earlier today or refer to Pete Nguyen in sales).

Step 1, AVG vs Vipre: Vipre was installed by AVG support on this box for a specific virus cleaning job they did for me months ago. It was uninstalled afterwards. I checked Add/Remove programs, Start > All Programs and the C:\program files folder to be sure it was indeed uninstalled. I also checked running processes and services to see if there were any bits left and found none. There maybe an orphan left somewhere that Combofix detected. If you think this may affect how Combofix reacts then I will contact Vipre for an uninstall cleaning tool (if they have something similar to MBAM-clean.exe)
