small popup systray open with the text (went by very fast) "infection detected.."
yet, looking at log, nothing is found?
did a scan, again, nothing is found?
latest updates applied, xp pro sp2

Sounds like you are using the paid version of MBAM which includes the new IP Protection feature that was introduced in version 1.40. It detects malicious IPs that your computer is trying to make contact with. It does not mean you are infected though but it does not necessarily mean your computer is clean either. Subsequent scans are usually recommended with your A/V and MalwareBytes Anti-Malware. If they both come up clean, you are most likely safe. You can read more about the IP Protection feature here:

how about writing the data to the Event Log ?
or give the user the option to save the data to the MAW log ?
