Can't find mbam.exe

Recommended Posts

I've had great luck with MBAM (malwarebytes' antimalware). I recently received a message from McAfee that a trojan was blocked. So I tried to scan my computer with MBAM and received a message that MBAM can't be found. Then, I uninstalled MBAM, but when I try to reinstall it I get an error message that says "Unable to Execute File c:\program files\malwarebytes' anti-malware\mbam.exe Create Process Failed; Code 2 System Cannot find the file specified.

For what it's worth McAfee scan indicates trojan Artemis!86BE7286E9F9 and c:\windows\system 32\HIJUSUZA.DLL. Also, I have pasted a Logfile from Hijack this.

Any suggestions as to what happened, and how I can get MBAM working again.

Thanks

Dan

Hi Dan,

Have you already tried this?

Hi Dan,

You are actually posting in someone elses thread which is confusing for Paul (the person who started this thread).

To make it easier for you, I uploaded a renamed copy of mbam.exe here: http://users.telenet.be/bluepatchy/miekiem...mp/explorer.exe

I have renamed it to explorer.exe in this case.

Download that file and place it (cut and paste, or copy and paste) it in your C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes Antimalware folder on the infected pc.

Then doubleclick that file (explorer.exe with mbam icon) in order to start the program / malwarebytes.

If you need further assistance with this one, please start your own thread with it, because it's confusing for me if I have to help different people in one thread :)

ouch... that smells bad.... This could reveal the presence of a file infector. This means, legitimate files are getting infected here. If that's the case, then this means a format and reinstall unfortunately...

Do you have backups of your important data? If not, please backup your important files you don't want to loose first. Like documents, pictures etc..

It's better safe than sorry, because when your computer already starts to act like this, then it means it's extremely instable, so better to backup first before we proceed here.

Do not backup any exe files, because they may be infected as well.

Then, once you've backed up important documents etc.. do the following..

* Please visit this webpage for instructions for downloading and running ComboFix:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Post the log from ComboFix in your next reply.

Please make sure you disable ALL of your Antivirus/Antispyware/Firewall before running ComboFix..This because Security Software may see some components ComboFix uses (prep.com for example) as suspicious and blocks the tool, or even deletes it. Please visit HERE if you don't know how.

Extra note: The combofix tutorial recommends to disable your Antivirus, in your case McAfee. For McAfee, I rather recommend to temporary uninstall it, because Mcafee causes a lot of problems with Combofix after reboot, this because McAfee enables again after reboot. So please temporary uninstall McAfee first, then reboot and then scan with Combofix.

Not to be whiny, but I think this is out of my league. About 6 mos ago I paid Dell $130 bucks to fix a similar issue. Looks like I will be doing that again ... or throwing the computer out the window. Does this combifix involve a reinstall? Do you think a novice like myself can do this combofix? I do have an external hardrive and will back up my important stuff.

Don't give up yet.. let's see first what Combofix reveals.

Combofix is a malware removal tool.

But before you run Combofix, first backup important documents anyway, this just in case.

It's very easy to use Combofix. Just download it to your desktop and doubleclick the Combofix icon in order to run it.

I know I sound dense, but how do I disable McAfee in order to run combofix? I thought there was an easy way to disable McAfee, but now I don't see how to do it. Thanks

Hi,

This should work:

Please navigate to the system tray and double-click the taskbar icon to open Security Center.

* Click Advanced Menu (bottom mid-left).

* Click Configure (left).

* Click Computer & Files (top left).

* VirusScan can be disabled in the right-hand module and set when it should resume or you can do that manually later on.

* Do the same via Internet & Network for Firewall Plus.

However, if no luck, it may be better to temporary uninstall McAfee via add&remove programs and then reboot. This because McAfee can be a pain here while using Combofix.

You can reinstall McAfee afterwards again once we are done with everything :)

Hello,

Here's my Combofix log. I can't believe I've made it this far. What's the next step?

Thanks

Hi,

* Open notepad - don't use any other texteditor than notepad or the script will fail.

Copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into notepad:

File::

c:\windows\SYSTEM32\nuboyune.dll

c:\program files\q330994.exe

c:\windows\SYSTEM32\pulasiya.dll

Registry::

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\~\Browser Helper Objects\{f0a9077d-05d9-48f1-9c35-7e54d8a3ace5}]

Save this as txtfile CFScript

Then drag the CFScript into ComboFix.exe as you see in the screenshot below.

CFScript.gif

This will start ComboFix again. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), post the contents of Combofix.txt in your next reply.

Sorry, how do I access Notepad?

You can redownload Combofix again.

Notepad should be located in your start > all programs list.

Or, just type notepad.exe in start > run. This should open notepad as well.

I'm back. Thanks for bearing with me. Here's the new log. Now what?

Thanks

Dan

Hi,

Open notepad and copy and paste next present in the quotebox below in it:

(don't forget to copy and paste REGEDIT4)

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]

"noherimaje"=-

Save this as fix.reg Choose to save as *all files and place it on your desktop.

It should look like this: reg.gif

Doubleclick on it and when it asks you if you want to merge the contents to the registry, click yes/ok.

Then, * Go to start > run and copy and paste next command in the field:

ComboFix /Uninstall

Make sure there's a space between Combofix and /

Then hit enter.

This will uninstall Combofix, delete its related folders and files, reset your clock settings, hide file extensions, hide the system/hidden files and resets System Restore again.

Let me know in your next reply how things are now.

I got the fix.reg and doubleclicked. That went okay. But when I pasted "ComboFix /Uninstall" in the start>run box I got an error message that said "Windows cannot find 'Combofix'. Make sure tyou type correctly then try again ... to search for a file...."

I actually pasted your command, so I didn't type it wrong.

Thanks.

Is there a chance taht Combofix already uninstalled by itself? I see that the icon is gone from my desktop again.

Good to hear :)

Is there anything else I need to do?
Yes, make sure this won't happen again, so Please read my Prevention page with lots of info and tips how to prevent this in the future.

And if you want to improve speed/system performance after malware removal, take a look here.

Extra note: Make sure your programs are up to date - because older versions may contain Security Leaks. To find out what programs need to be updated, please run the Secunia Software Inspector Scan.

Happy Surfing again!
