Hello, I has an odd issue. I have a user whose computer is have issues. It's slow, there are pop ups. I tried to run MalwareBytes but the executable has been renamed. I tried reinstalling it but when it tries to start MalWareBytes it errors out. I am including a HiJackThis log. I know somethings there but I can't get rid of it. Also whenever I try to boot into Safe Mode I get a BSOD but booting into normal mode works fine. Any suggestions?

Hi,

To run malwarebytes when you get the error code 2 during install, or mbam.exe gets deleted, please see here:

http://www.malwareby...showtopic=29028
Once malwarebytes opens, click the "Update" tab, click "Check for Updates" in order to download the updates.
Then run the scan, let mbam quarantine/delete what it found and reboot afterwards.
After reboot, post the malwarebytes log together with a new HijackThislog.

Hi,

I see you are running AdWatch.
I suggest you disable it because it can interfere with the fixes.

To disable AdWatch - * Right click on the Ad-Watch icon in the system tray and select to Disable Adwatch Live.

Then, * Please visit this webpage for instructions for downloading and running ComboFix:

http://www.bleepingc...to-use-combofix

Post the log from ComboFix in your next reply.

Please make sure you disable ALL of your Antivirus/Antispyware/Firewall before running ComboFix..This because Security Software may see some components ComboFix uses (prep.com for example) as suspicious and blocks the tool, or even deletes it. Please visit HERE if you don't know how.

Than k you for you assistance so far, however I am unable to get into the machine now. When I boot up in Normal mode I get an error saying "Services.exe - bad image. The application or DLL c:\windows\system32\kewarene.dll is not a valid Windows image. Please check this against your installation diskette." At the same time the mouse and keyboard either freeze up or stop responding. On the keyboard the NumLock stays lite no matter how many time you press the key. Both keyboard and mouse are USB devices and the computer they are connected to does not have PS2 connectors. If I try to start the machine in safe mode I get a Blue Screen of Death error. I'm figuring that I am going to have to reformat the machine and start clean. If you have any suggestions as to work around these issues I would be most appreciative.

Hi,

Have you used Combofix?
Can you do anything with the keyboard/mouse? ideal would be to have a usb mouse/PS2 mouse, so you can fix this issue with HijackThis and check and fix the following entry in HijackThis:

O20 - AppInit_DLLs: kewarene.dll c:\windows\system32\keloresu.dll

No, I have not been able to run ComboFix. I can't get into the computer, as I said the keyboard locks as soon as Windows starts running. I have no problem with the keyboard when I access the BIOS of the computer or when I try to boot in Safe Mode. I even tried to do a repair install of Windows but I don't know what the administrator password is for this particular machine. I *really* don't what to wipe the hard drive and do a reinstall of the OS. I will try again to access the machine tomorrow but if you have any ideas as to how I can access the machine I will be most appreciative.

Is it a wireless mouse you are using? Do you have a non wireless mouse around there? If so, then we can at least do something (I hope), because it looks like the malware also hooked the wireless components, and since the malware is gone now, but value under appinit_dlls is still present, asking for the malware, it's why you get the errors after reboot. Clicking Ok should proceed then though, but in your case, you can't click OK.

Btw, for a repair install and the password, see here:
http://www.raymond.cc/blog/archives/2006/1...-on-windows-xp/

What you can also do is using BartPe to edit the registry "offline":
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/peboot.htm

In above tutorial, it explains how to restore the registry for the userinit key.
In your case, it's another key you have to "fix":

In the tutorial it says to navigate to the following key (after creating and loading the Hive, exactly as explained there):

HKEY_USERS \ MyXPHive \ Microsoft \ Windows NT \ CurrentVersion \ Winlogon

But in your case, you have to navigate to this key:

HKEY_USERS \ MyXPHive \ Microsoft \ Windows NT \ CurrentVersion \ Windows

There, on the right, you'll find the value Appinit_Dlls. If you doubleclick it, it will have "kewarene.dll c:\windows\system32\keloresu.dll" for value there.
That value should be emptied out, so the valuedata for that key should be blank.

No, the keyboard and mouse are both wired devices.

I tried to run BartPE but I kept get Blue Screens of Death.
As for doing the repair install and the password, I can't get past the the start of the repair proceedure because it is asking for the admin password.

I think this machine is throughly hosed. I will talk to the user tomorrow and tell them I need to reformat the machine and start over from scratch.

Yes, I believe the same since nothing works. Most probably a file infector present here (infects legitimate files), because that would indeed explain all the issues you are having. This wouldn't suprise me at all though, because the malware you were dealing with comes in 80% of the cases with a file infector (Virut/Sality/Parite)
When a file infector is present, a format and reinstall is the fastest and especially the safest solution.
