Greetings,

I have recently gotten zinged with the Trojan.Vundo.H infection. I have tried
to perform the various recommendations found within this forum and had
initial success at cleaning my PC.

However, last night, before powering off, I ran the Malwarebytes Anti-Malware
on all 4 accounts that I have set up on my PC. Each one of them came back
with no issues. Then, this morning, I turned on my PC and performed a
scan, and found the infections have returned.

I reviewed some of the suggestions found in miekiemoes blog located at
hxxp://miekiemoes.blogspot.com/2008/02/how-to-prevent-malware.html. But
I still have not completed all the recommendations. I do have a virus scanner (avast)
and AdAware running at all times. I also have turned on Windows Defender.

I would appreciate any help you can provide.

Kind regards.

My problem appears to be getting worse. I have had to scan my machine
4 times with Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and it keeps finding new (usually
different) files/registry keys that are infected.

Are there any recommendations on how I should proceed.

Thanks

Wanted to provide some updated information. Last night before I shutdown, I performed a MBAM Quick Scan and everything came back clean. This morning, I started my PC and immediately performed a Quick Scan. It found several issues (of which many look very familiar to previous issues). It seems like the pattern is becoming that the machine is clean before I shutdown, but not clean when I start up. Do some Trojans populate themselves during the "shutdown" event?

I have included my latest MBAM scan and HJT report in hopes that you can assist. Thanks.

Hi,

First of all, please update MalwareBytes, because the databaseversion is outdated.

  • Start MalwareBytes and click the Update tab. There click "Check for updates"
  • Once the updates are downloaded, perform a quick scan again.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log, then we'll proceed from there with new steps.
Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediatly.

I appreciate you taking time to help me address this issue.

I updated MBAM and then performed the quick scan as requested. After the reboot
I ran HJT. Both logs are below.

Thanks again for your assistance.

Thanks again for your quick replies. I deleted the selections you instructed and
rebooted. HJT logfile is below.

One last question, I was reading in various blogs that Firefox is more vulnerable
to attacks than IE8. Do you have a preference from a prevention standpoint?

Thanks.

Hi,

This looks OK again.

Quote

One last question, I was reading in various blogs that Firefox is more vulnerable
to attacks than IE8. Do you have a preference from a prevention standpoint?
This depends. When a vulnerability is found in Firefox, an update will be released within the next couple of days. For IE you always have to wait till patch tuesday every month (ofcourse there may be exceptions).
I use Firefox with the "noscript" extension, so that combination makes it safer than IE8.

Please read my Prevention page with lots of info and tips how to prevent this in the future.
And if you want to improve speed/system performance after malware removal, take a look here.
Extra note: Make sure your programs are up to date - because older versions may contain Security Leaks. To find out what programs need to be updated, please run the Secunia Software Inspector Scan.

Happy Surfing again!

Just wanted to say thanks again for your help. After completing the updates per
your instructions, my PC has been "clean" on the various scans that I have executed
throughout the day.

Kind regards,
Chris
