Please download Sysinternals Autoruns from here.

  • Save Autoruns.exe to your desktop and double-click it to run it.
  • Once it starts, please press the Esc key on your keyboard.
  • Now that scanning is stopped, click on the Options button at the top of the program and select Verify Code Signatures
  • Once that's done press the F5 key on your keyboard, this will start the scan again, this time let it finish.
  • When it's finished, please click on the File button at the top of the program and select Save and click the drop down menu next to Save as type and select Text (*.txt) and save the Autoruns.txt file to your desktop and close Autoruns.
  • Now double click on the Autoruns.txt file located on your desktop to open it with notepad and copy and paste its contents into your next reply.

For some reason I can't get the entries to load correctly as formatted. Please right-click the Autoruns.txt file you created and hover your mouse over Send to and select Compressed (zipped) Folder and attach the Autoruns.zip folder to your next post.

Repair Windows Update:

  • Please download the Windows Update Microsoft Fix it tool from here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click it to run it and select Aggressive Mode
  • Once it finishes, restart your computer and try checking for udpates via Start>All Programs>Windows Update

Post Service Info:

  • Please download the attached zip file and save it to your desktop.
  • Extract it and double click the extracted batch file to run it
  • Once it completes a log will open in notepad, please copy and paste its entire contents into your next post.

WUSVCCFG.zip

Please let me know if you have any questions, also tell me if the Fix it tool corrected the problem and if you're now able to update.

Thanks ;)

I never had a problem updating. I don't know why Ron thought I did. The only thing that showed up was I.E. 8, which I cannot use because of some of the online work I do.

Here's the contents of the WUSC... file.

Much thanks, :=]

I never had a problem updating. I don't know why Ron thought I did. The only thing that showed up was I.E. 8, which I cannot use because of some of the online work I do.
Ah, I see, sorry about that :( . We'll move on directly to your list of issues then:
1) RED X - Had to install new s/w for an online job. Tech Support advised me to download a new Java version because mine did not seem to be working. The "red X" problem developed after the new Java was installed.
Can you describe the "Red X" problem in any more detail? Do the java components of web pages show up with a red x, similar to when a web page doesn't show a picture?

Update Java:

  • Click on Start and select Control Panel and click Add\Remove Programs
  • Look for any entries related to Java and uninstall them
  • Once that's done download JavaRa from here
  • Extract it and double click it to run it
  • Select the language you desire
  • Click the Remove Older Versions button
  • Then go here: http://java.com/en/download/ and download and install the latest version of Java

2) For eons, I've been getting an error message on startup regarding: CD Recording Software, Roxio, Inc. Issue Description:

A CD-recording driver is installed that might cause stability problems, including problems shutting down and problems using a CD/DVD drive. This driver will be disabled. This driver might have been installed by Easy CD Creator, Windows Media Player or RealJukebox. You might not be able to record CDs until you obtain compatible drivers.

CAN I FIX THIS? I have not been able to burn a CD in years. What software should I use?

This was the main reason I had you use Autoruns, unfortunately my latest version of Autoruns is acting up ;) . I'll need you to run it one more time, but this time a bit differently than before then I should be able to find the offending driver and remove it as well as figure out what you need to install to get CD burning working again:
3) I have a problem running anti-virus software because it causes my computer to freeze up when I'm on the Internet. I think it's because I need more RAM, but don't have the bucks to buy more right now. I am using Avira now. Any s/w you recommend that might run better?
How much Ram do you have? Also, what type of internet connection do you use (high-speed or dial-up)?
4) ABC Player at abc.com. Cannot get it to work. There are a number of TV shows there I'd like to watch. Any ideas?
Most likely an issue either with your internet settings, which we'll reset in a bit or a plugin/codec problem.
5) I just bought a new keyboard and Windows Plug 'n Play isn't recognizing it when I plug in the USB port. I spent 2 hours on the phone with Dynex Support in Argentina. I downloaded everything they suggested, including all drivers. Still no go. They came to the conclusion that the keyboard was no good. Any other ideas?
Try it on a different USB port to see if it gets recognized, also test the port with a different device to make sure it's functioning as it should be and test the keyboard on a second computer if you have one.
6) I disabled Webshots awhile back, but kept the program because I wanted to keep the pics. All of a sudden it's popping up periodically on my task bar. How do I get rid of?
Autoruns, we'll get to that in a moment after you post the file for me that I'll request below.
7) At least once a week I lose sound. I uninstall and reinstall the hardware and it works until next time. Is there a permanent solution?
A strange issue, I'll look into it and see if we can't fix it permanently for you :( .

  • When it's finished, please click on the File button at the top of the program and select Save and save the Autoruns.arn file to your desktop and close Autoruns.
  • Right click on the Autoruns.arn file on your desktop and hover your mouse over Send To and select Compressed (zipped) Folder
  • Attach the Autoruns.zip folder you just created to your next reply

Also, what is the exact model number of your Dell Dimension? It should be on the front of the tower or on a sticker on the side of it.

WOW! That's a lot of homework, teacher. ;) But I will do it all as quickly as I can, which may be in spurts because I have something I'm studying for right now. And my 1 y.o. doggie is sick, and I'm his nurse.

The dreaded red X. A good example is I have posted pictures in a group online that I belong to. Now, suddenly, I can no longer see them. What I see is a box the size of the picture with a multi-colored X in the upper right corner. Others can see the pictures, but not me.

My model is ... a good question. Right now I have my computer locked in place because that's the only way I can get my keyboard to work. (Pulling upward on the connection and securing it by placing the cord under my desk lamp, which is now sitting on top of my tower). Yes, I will do anything to make something work when I need it to.

I will test out the keyboard on another computer - SUCH A BRILLIANT IDEA. I can't believe the idiot Dynex guy in Argentina didn't come up with it during the 2 hrs. I spent on the phone with him. Hrmph! Foreigners! lol

Many thanks and ttl. :(

That should be an easy fix. I'll track it down and post it for you in a while :) .

Is that the keyboard you were having issues with? If so then it sounds like either the USB port is bad from being used and abused (something that often happens to them) or the end of the cord where it plugs in has a bad connector.
WOW! That's a lot of homework, teacher.
Sorry, I just wanted to address every issue you had, at least briefly and let you know what I was going to try, in case there were something you'd already tried, in which case we would skip it and try something else. I also wanted to make sure that I was attempting to fix the right issues since I started working on Windows Update, which you stated was not the issue you were having ;) .

And don't worry, there's no rush at all, I am not at all pressed for time or in any sort of hurry. I'm on this site all the time so I'll keep checking back to see when you reply, then I'll see what I can figure out to fix things (or attempt to at least :( ).

For your next post, the primary things I need are the Autoruns.arn file (zipped and attached) and the model number of your dell. You may also be able to find it by clicking Start and right-clicking on My Computer and selecting Properties. Dell and other PC manufacturers will often customize that info to show the brand and model of the PC. It will save you some fidgeting with the keyboard too :( .

Re: The "dreaded red X" it is actually in the upper left corner (vs. right).

Is that the keyboard you were having issues with? If so then it sounds like either the USB port is bad from being used and abused (something that often happens to them) or the end of the cord where it plugs in has a bad connector.

No, I am currently using my old keyboard. It plugs into a regular spot (NOT USB). I haven't gotten the new keyboard to work yet. The new keyboard has the USB connection. And, yes, I can try another of the 6 ports available. Can I do that and still keep the old one plugged in? I have a project I'm working on that starts today and runs thru the end of Nov. I'm afraid that if I unplug this dinosaur, I may lose keyboard functionality all together. :)

Sorry, I just wanted to address every issue you had, at least briefly and let you know what I was going to try, in case there were something you'd already tried, in which case we would skip it and try something else. I also wanted to make sure that I was attempting to fix the right issues since I started working on Windows Update, which you stated was not the issue you were having. ;)

Well, if you see my initial post here, you'll see the quote from Ron regarding a windows update problem. Don't know why he thought that. I could ask him, though. I am, however, thrilled and quite encouraged that you exude confidence in fixing all the niggling problems of mine.

And don't worry, there's no rush at all, I am not at all pressed for time or in any sort of hurry. I'm on this site all the time so I'll keep checking back to see when you reply, then I'll see what I can figure out to fix things (or attempt to at least :( ).

Like I said ... Mr. 24/7 Helper! :)

For your next post, the primary things I need are the Autoruns.arn file (zipped and attached)

Done.

and the model number of your dell. You may also be able to find it by clicking Start and right-clicking on My Computer and selecting Properties. Dell and other PC manufacturers will often customize that info to show the brand and model of the PC. It will save you some fidgeting with the keyboard too. :(

Sadly, Dell did not do that kind service for me. BUT, the good news is I was able to locate my original order confirmation from Dell back in 2003, which lists all the doodads it came with. Here it is:

Dell Dimension 2350: Pentium

This should fix Internet Explorer not showing pictures:

Correct the images not displaying problem:

  • Open Internet Explorer
  • Click on Tools (The button looks like a silver gear)
  • Select Internet Options
  • Click on the Advanced tab
  • Scroll down to where it says Multimedia
  • Check the box next to Show pictures
  • Click the Apply button and click Ok
  • Check to see if they're displaying now as they should

Can I do that and still keep the old one plugged in?
Yes you can :( .
256 MB DDR SDRAM 266MHz (1 DIMM)
Ouch, that is pretty low ;) . Hopefully I can help with making your system a bit lighter by disabling unneeded stuff with Autoruns. If at all possible, I'd recommend upgrading to 1GB of ram at some point, or at least 512Mb.
Oops. Forgot to attach the AutoRuns zip file.
Unfortunately that one is still a text file, I need you to save it without changing the file type. It will end up being called Autoruns.arn. You can delete the previous one you attached to free up some space since attachment space is limited on this forum by going to your user profile and clicking Manage Attachments. Autoruns used to be able to open the .txt files correctly, but Microsoft must have changed something about it in the newest version because now it doesn't :( .

For a refresh, here's the instructions for Autoruns again so you don't have to go back through the entire post:

Please download Sysinternals Autoruns from here.

  • Save Autoruns.exe to your desktop and double-click it to run it.
  • Once it starts, please press the Esc key on your keyboard.
  • Now that scanning is stopped, click on the Options button at the top of the program and select Verify Code Signatures
  • Once that's done press the F5 key on your keyboard, this will start the scan again, this time let it finish.

The reason I said your Automatic Updates might not be working is due to the error reported in your Event Logs from DDS.

10/13/2009 5:37:28 AM, error: Service Control Manager [7023] - The Automatic

Updates service terminated with the following error: The specified module could not be found.

@Exile

You may want to review some of the current entries in his Event Logs to verify what is or is not still working.

No problem, I'll check it out ;) .

@KPP: After you run the fix I posted above and check to see if you still get the warnings about incompatible CD recording driver please do the following:

Post Event Logs:

  • Please download VEW by Vino Rosso from here and save it to your desktop
  • Double click it to start it Note: If running Windows Vista or Windows 7 you will need to right click the file and select Run as administrator and click Continue or Allow at the User Account Control Prompt.
  • Click the check boxes next to Application and System located under Select log to query on the upper left
  • Under Select type to list on the right click the boxes next to Error and Warning Note: If running Windows Vista or Windows 7 also click the box next to Critical (not XP).
  • Under Number or date of events select Number of events and type 20 in the box next to 1 to 20 and click Run
  • Once it finishes it will display a log file in notepad
  • Please copy and paste its entire contents into your next reply

Post back letting me know if the CD issue is fixed along with the event logs.

Thanks :(

Well 24/7, I did the above only to discover that the box was already checked. But are you ready for THIS? Ever since my visit to Internot Options, my pictures are visible again. Huh? Is this some kind of voodoo?

Mucho weirdo! lol ;)

I see quite a few things in Autoruns and we'll get to that in a bit, but first,

There is no option to download, only "Run." Should I do that?

Click on Save and save it to your desktop, then double click on the file on your desktop to run it :( .

It's likely that something was goofy and the setting in the registry wasn't set that way, even though it was set that way in Internet Options, but when you accessed Internet Options it refreshed the settings and applied them, thus enabling images in web pages again :( .

Dear Exile,

As you will see here, I have been a good student tonight. I've done more homework that you assigned. :)

It's likely that something was goofy and the setting in the registry wasn't set that way, even though it was set that way in Internet Options, but when you accessed Internet Options it refreshed the settings and applied them, thus enabling images in web pages again :) .

Sorry. spoke too soon. Still have both the "red" x and the multi-colored x. I can see some pictures, but not all & can't see any of the video pics. (You know, the pic you get when you link (embed?) the url with the video. In my online group we use "video:http//" etc.

[DSL

4) ABC Player at abc.com. Cannot get it to work. There are a number of TV shows there I'd like to watch. Any ideas?

Most likely an issue either with your internet settings, which we'll reset in a bit or a plugin/codec problem.

[I hope you're right because I'm not the only one who has this problem. There are a whole bunch of people who can't get the player to work. grrr

I see quite a few things in Autoruns and we'll get to that in a bit, but first, please download and run the Microsoft Fix it tool here to see if it corrects the CD burner problem. Let me know if it worked or not.

[Well, the pop-up message disappeared a couple of days ago. I ran the Fix It tool tonight & it didn't find any problems. I haven't tried burning a CD. I don't think I have burning s/w.

Please download VEW

Hello KPP,

It appears that you are either still infected or have picked one up again. Please open a new post in the HJT forum and I will assist you with scanning and removal of this infection. The PC Help forum is not a place for that. Also you need to keep coming back and checking and updating me so that I know the status.

Thank you.

Will do.

Tonight I also cleared out the restore points as you suggested in the message you sent to my inbox here.

What about the issues that Exile is working with me on?
