fyi this started after being hijacked by the "security tool". I was totally hijacked by the "security tool".
After manually deleting the security tool .exe (hidden as program file/"some numbers") and stopping processes using task manager I was able to run avg from the hard drive and mbam (updated) from a flash drive.
Mbam will now run from the desktop.

Hi

With reference to Malwarebytes' HiJack This! Forum Policy, please uninstall the following programs before we continue:

  • Click on Start > Control Panel and double click on Add/Remove Programs.
  • Locate BitTorrent and click on the Change/Remove button to uninstall it.
  • Close Add/Remove Programs and Control Panel when done.
When you use P2P (Peer to Peer) file sharing programmes, you are downloading software from an unknown source directly onto your computer, bypassing your Firewall and Anti-Virus software. Hardly surprising then that many of these Downloads are being targeted to carry infections.

We see no purpose in cleaning your machine if you use P2P programmes, as it is pretty much certain that if you continue to use them then you will get infected again.

random's system information tool (RSIT)

  • Download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from HERE and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open:
    • log.txt (<<will be maximized)
    • info.txt (<<will be minimized)
  • Post both of these logs in your next reply (Sometimes you have to make several post to get the logs posted.)

Hi

There appears to be a lot missing from the RSIT logs that I need to see first.

Please navigate to the C:\RSIT folder and copy & paste all of the content of both log.txt and info.txt into your next reply & re-post them please.

Punkbuster Warning
I see you have Punkbuster installed. This is spyware. Punkbuster can take control over various aspects of your computer, and some gaming tools not unlike Punkbuster also hinder their removals. By the definition we handle here, Punkbuster is actual spyware.
In PunkBuster's EULA, PunkBuster notes they may be considered invasive, and that they reserve the right to inspect someone's entire harddrive and all of their files: "Licensee understands and agrees that the information that may be inspected and reported by PunkBuster software includes, but is not limited to, Licensee's Internet Protocol Address, devices and any files residing on the hard-drive and in the memory of the computer on which PunkBuster software is installed."
Therefore, I now ask you to decide the following:
  • Either we try to leave Punkbuster alone but there is no guarantee a spyware component doesn't 'accidentally' get taken out; so Punkbuster might break. This will, of course, also break your ability to play games using Punkbuster enabled servers.
  • Or we can just remove Punkbuster. You can reinstall it afterwards if you wish, but please keep in mind that it is spyware.
  • Another option is to not clean this computer at all. This ensures Punkbuster will continue to function.
Please let me know what you would like to do in your next post.

    • Referring to the screenshot above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe.
    • ComboFix will now run a scan on your system. It may reboot your system when it finishes. This is normal.
    • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply.
CAUTION: Do not mouse-click ComboFix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

When CF finishes running, the ComboFix log will open along with a message box--do not be alarmed. With the above script, ComboFix will capture files to submit for analysis.

    • Ensure you are connected to the internet and click OK on the message box.

In your next reply:
  • VirusTotal/Jotti results
  • Combofix.txt

  • Please open Notepad (Start -> Run -> type notepad in the Open field -> OK) and copy and paste the text present inside the code box below:

    SRPeek::
    c:\windows\system32\drivers\beep.sys

    Driver::
    gAGP440p

    Registry::

  • Save this as CFScript.txt and change the "Save as type" to "All Files" and place it on your desktop.

  • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before following the steps below. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
  • If you need help to disable your protection programs see here.

In your next reply:
  • Combofix.txt
  • A fresh HijackThis log (Do a system scan and save a log file)
  • A description of how the computer is running now

Hi pdukey

The decision to reformat & reinstall the OS is entirely your choice. Do you have the Windows CD?

There are a number of programs on your PC that are outdated and present a security risk. These need updating - whether you reinstall the OS or not. Not least IE6 as it is an integral part of the Windows XP Operating System. Even if you use an alternative browser certain programs use IE to perform functions like updating etc.

Let me know whether you've decided to reformat in your next post. If you would like to continue, please carry out the instructions below:

Update Internet Explorer (IE)

Update to IE8 - either through Windows update, or by downloading it & installing it from here.

Update Adobe Acrobat Reader
Your Adobe Acrobat Reader is out of date.
Older versions may have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.
Please download Adobe Reader 9.2 to your PC's desktop.
  • Uninstall via Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs

    Quote

    Adobe Reader 8
  • Install the new downloaded updated software.

Update Java Runtime
You are using an old version of Java. Sun's Java is sometimes updated in order to eliminate the exploitation of vulnerabilities in an existing version. For this reason, it's extremely important that you keep the program up to date, and also remove the older more vulnerable versions from your system. The most current version of Sun Java is: Java Runtime Environment Version 6 Update 17.
  • Go to Java Site
  • Click to Download Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 17
  • In Platform box choose Windows.
  • Check the box to Accept License Agreement and click Continue.
  • Click on Windows Offline Installation, click on the link under it which says "jre-6u17-windows-i586-p.exe" and save the downloaded file to your desktop.
  • Go to Start => Control Panel => Add or Remove Programs
  • Uninstall all old versions of Java

    Quote

    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 12
    Java™ 6 Update 2

  • Install the new version by running the newly-downloaded file with the java icon which will be at your desktop, and follow the on-screen instructions.
  • Reboot your computer

Gmer

Download GMER Rootkit Scanner from here.
  • Double click the .exe file. If asked to allow gmer.sys driver to load, please consent
  • If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan...click on NO

    Posted Image
Click the image to enlarge it

  • In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Uncheck the following ...
    • Sections
    • IAT/EAT
    • Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
    • Show All (don't miss this one)
  • Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish
  • Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "Gmer.txt" or it will save as a .log file
  • Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop, and post it in your next reply
**Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<--- ROOKIT" entries

Note: Do not run any programs while Gmer is running.
