Happened out of nowhere upon a reboot. I did the uninstall/run the cleaner/reinstall but with and without Kaspersky 2010 running to no avail. I start protection and it comes back with error code 2 after a few minutes. It's on database version 3189. Am I just waiting on the next database upgrade since that's what fixed it last time?

I tried it and nothing comes up dirty on a quickscan. I'll try fullscan but I ran that yesterday and nothing came up.

you don't need to full scan, a quick scan is sufficient. Another user just posted about this same error after updating to latest database. Let me see if this is a known issue. Thanks

I really think 3189 was a defective update since someone else had the same problem. Waiting on 3190.

The same error occurred for me.
I am sure it relates to database 3189. I booted the computer and it loaded fine. Updated as per usual. Rebooted and the same error was shown.
Hope this will be fixed soon.

Same thing happened to me, did the whole uninstall/cleanup/reinstall procedure to the letter and still had the same issue. When I go to restart the service in services via the Microsoft Management Console, i get this error
---------------------------
Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
---------------------------
[OpenEvent] Failed to perform desired action. Error Code: 2
---------------------------
---------------------------
When I look at the protection log, this is what it reads:
17:31:26 ERROR zlib::decompress failed with error code 5
17:31:26 MESSAGE Protection stopped
17:34:49 ERROR zlib::decompress failed with error code 5
17:34:49 MESSAGE Protection stopped

Yes I just updated and the problem is solved. Thanks for fixing it, but I about freaked out in the meanwhile because I had issues with another security program I got rid of that kept corrupting my malwarebytes program. I keep thinking - this can't be happening again. I am glad it is fixed and we have active protection once more - whew!

Lol, I know what you mean, before my laptop was fixed by clean installing XP on it with MB and Symantec Endpoint Protection Small Business Edition, put on for protection, my computer kept freezing up on me and even crashed on me on more than one occasion, so much so that one time it had to be wiped and new os installed. Now, no errors/viruses/malware/spyware/what-have-you-ware, disturb it at all. Whoo!
