Someone advised adding MBAM to an anti-virus's exclusion list. In my case, that is Norton, and there are three areas under Exclusions: Scan, Autoprotect, and Signature. Which one should I select?

[PS: I know many people prefer other anti-virus programs, but that's another discussion.]

Hello Just Your Avg Bear, and Welcome to Malwarebytes.org

If you're not having any problems, you don't need to set exclusions. Some people DO have problems running MBAM along side some Anti-Virus applications, and the exclusions generally seem to work.

We don't currently have a write up for Norton but you can look here at the settings for McAfee and here for the settings for Trend Micro to see if you can adapt your situation.

My best guess is to start off with putting the following files in the Autoprotect section. Alternatively, if you have an option to exclude entire directories, then exclude C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\ and then move on to the C:\Windows\... files individually, etc.
  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\MBAM.exe
  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\MBAMGUI.exe
  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\MBAMSERVICE.exe
  • C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\MBAM.sys
  • C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\MBAMSWISSARMY.sys
  • C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\RULES.ref
After you've set the exclusions, reboot and run a MBAM update and quick scan to see if you still experience problems. If necessary, repeat these exclusions in the Scan section of Norton. Take a look at the Norton logs to see if they are blocking anything.

Jack,

Thanks so much for your incredibly quick response.

I did have a problem (MBAM protection disabled at start-up, now solved....whew!), so I'll hold onto your recommendations [which I very much appreciate] in case a similar situation arises. Thanks again!! - Avg Bear
